Can anyone tie William D. Coats into the correct family in Nacogdoches, TX? In People of Nacogdoches County 1850 there lists Tempa Moore (sp) age 10 in the household of Alfred W. Moore Jr. at # 290. Next door #291 is Polly Randle and 293 is Redick Clifton who married one of the Moore daughters. The Cliftons, Randles, Moores, Matlocks and Coats and Bells and Birdwells intermarried. I am trying to connect to the correct COATS family WILLIAM D. COATS who married Tempie Moore (real name Emily Caroline (Emaline). William D. Coats served in the CSA with William H. Coats and Jason Thompson (Tom) Bell., Joel Tasewell Bell's son. Joel lived next door to Lucinda Birdwell Vaught and their children married each other. Later, Emaline Moore Coats and William D. Coats daughter, Minerva Ann Coats married John B. Bell, Joel Tasewell Bell's grandson. Can anyone out there, help me place William D. Coats with one of the Nacogdoches families? He is listed in the People of Nacogdoches in the Civil War with the rest of the Coats boys. Thanks, Lovey Rhodes Smitham

Many of my aunts and uncles are of an age where failing memory prevails, but this one has sharp memory recall. Nell, isn't this your family....hmmmmm, well this is interesting....John William was one of Huff's sons as well....maybe a mistake and it should be just William, isn't he the one buried in Welch and I think Ann got a picture of his tombstone....I don't have those up yet....hmmmm....Char ******************* I have looked at all of your considerable work on Coats family and I am astounded at the volume of your work. I am uncertain exactly where my family ties in. My grandfather (James Henry Coats) from Oklahoma was one of 9 children and he produced l3 children. James Henry's parents were John William and Sarah. John William was born in l839 in Tennessee and died l9l6 (of war related wounds it is said). He may have married twice. One of his wives was part Cherokee. Sarah Coats died in l938 and is buried in Joplin, Missouri. John William does not quite seem to fit in the Rev. Coats clan. I suspect that Eva Coats listed as Cherokee wife of John William Coats may have been his other wife. Do you have any thoughts about how my family ties into the Tennessee group? This is the page with the funeral home records and obituaries on it: http://www.rootsquest.com/~coatsfar/oklahomadoc.html There is a Samuel D. Coats in this group, wife was Fanny or Farmy Coats, father Perry Coats and mother Louise Rash, she was born in Alabama. Samuel died Nov 6, 1935 in Bernice OK, was buried Nov 8, 1935 in McLauglin Cemetery...I'm not sure where this was but probably around the Vinita area...says he was born in Kansas, no place of birth for his father...at the bottom of the record there looks like another name as well...a Cr?by Ernest Coats or Eiruest ...can't quite make it out... He was a member or the funeral was held at teh Baptist Church in Bernice...I'm not sure where this is... My cousin, Ann Sasser, she is the granddaughter of Aunt Annie Coats Taylor, my great grandfather's sister...anyway, she was in OK and took some pictures of the tombstones in Bluejacket Cemetery, Bluejacket OK...I've added those to the Archive as well...there are a couple of Nigh photos there, that is Muzetta Nigh's family, wife of James Edward Coats...he was married a second time to a Mary, but that was much later in life and there are no children by that marriage...created quite a stir with his kids... http://www.rootsquest.com/~coatsfar/photo.html There is a stone for Huff D. Coats and his wife Louisa Jane Craig..but she thought I already had it so she didn't take a picture of that one...but I've got another Aunt back there that I hope will... I've also gotten most of the Coats funeral records from Luginbuel's Funeral services...I have them scanned but not up yet...also some newspaper obituaries...with a history of Bluejacket Cemetery... Will, let you know when I get them in the Archive... SO. CAR. 1802:Jan:26: GEORGE ABERNATHY to Marmaduke Coate (both of newberry) for $500.00 for 160A, part of 200A originally granted to Phlip Fagan?, situate in Fork of Broad and Saluda Ribers [sic.], patent dated 8:19:1768 and conveyed by Fagan toMonathan Taylor and by him to his son Jonathan Taylor and by him to GEORGE ABERNATHY and by said Abernathy to Marmaduke Coate on Jan. 26, 1802. Wits: Samuel Miles, Wm. miles. "NOTE: There were two Marmaduke Coates n Newberry in this period. One 9the younger) was the son of Little John Coate (many descendants went to Alabama). The other was the son f Henry & Estehr (Wilson) Coate wh came south from New Jersey and he md Mary Coppock dau of Moses & Martha (Lester) Coppock. Moses was killed by Indians near White Lick Meeting House c 1758/9 and Martha left a will (1797). "I have found that the name Fagan was sometimes TEAGUE. "Samuel & Wm. Miles were sons of William & Catherine Miles. Samuel md Mary Taylor d/o Jonathan & Mary (?) Taylor and Wm. md her sister Jane. The Miles lived at Rocky Springs (my Pemberton familyw as in that section). Marmaduke Coate, son of Little John, was a surveyor and I have his map of Newberry Co." This next quote is from a different letter which I think was mailed to me in September 1981: "Believe John & Rhoda had a dau. Amy who married John Cote sn of John Coate & Rachel Wright of Newberry Co. S. Car. Did Amy die before John came to Miami Co. Ohio where he requested that his brother William be appointed guardian of his ch. Henry, John, Rhoda & Sally in the Jan. term of Common Pleas Court 1810. Bk J1, 101. May hae had a dau Estehr who d. Amy was liing Sept. 12, 1792 when she was a witness at the marriage of George Brock & Chariy Cook (Bush River original Quaker records)." The following is from a letter to me dated Nov. 4, 1981: "Thank you for what data yous ent me even if it wasn't what I needed. what about George - do you have anything on him? Since he deeded land to Marmaduke Coate, perhaps he is the correct one." I was a little late answering her; I was busy having babies at that time. On August 9, 1984 I wrote: "George Abernathy...was born around 1786, the son of John and Rhoda (Davis) Abernathy. He married Abigail Lindsay, daughter of James (and Ruth) Lindsay, the patriot. George died n 1830 in SC....George was the brother of my ancestor Samuel Abernathy who was born in 1798 and married Jane Boyd." Do (or did) you know Mary Helen Pemberton? On Jan. 11, 1982 she wrote: "We are having a snowstorm. Was 20 deg. below zero yesterday morning. I have to stay in and keep warm as my temperature goes to 94 sometimes and I just freeze and must stay in bed to keep warm. I get sleepy and just might not wake up if temperature went any lower." Anything new or controversial in these quotes? She also wrote: "My Isaiah Pemberton who md Elizabeth Hall was the elder son of Geo. & Margaret (?) Pemberton - and brother to George who md Judith Brooks. There was a Geroge Pemberton there who had a wife Sara and I cannot place him" (Jan. 11, 1982). I've ordered the SC Council Minutes for the entire year of 1766...not sure how long it will take them to get to me... The process at the KY and SC Archives are similar...you send a request, with SC it can be done via email but with KY via the snail mail, they then send you an invoice, which you send back to them with payment... So may take awhile to get them, I just sent the invoice to SC yesterday... These are records that have not been microfilmed or published, not sure what we'll find on them but there are some earlier years that might be interesting as well...we'll at least know what was going on in SC about the time the Coats lived there at any rate...
