    1. [COATES] Updated Coates DNA page
    2. Linda Coate
    3. Hi everyone. I finally got an update to our Coates DNA page. We have some interesting new additions. Check the Robert Coates of Lynn, Mass. and the Wiley Coates groups. If you have a kit number up, would you please check your kit link to see that it contains the information you wanted. Does anyone have evidence that Needham Coats, b. 1831 in Tennessee and Thomas Benton Coats, b. 1838 in Tennessee are brothers. They have an exact DNA match and were cousins for sure. They are in Wiley's group. Thanks. Linda Coate, admin.

    3. I have a research report just completed on the Henry Coates of Wilkes County, Virginia that probably was the Henry Coats/Coates from Lunenberg, VA. Will it work to copy and paste it into the list ... or attach it to an email.. or those that are interested can email me for a copy. FYI - H. Jarrot was Howell Jarrett married to Jane Smiley Coates. Henrietta Coates was married to John Bankston who was related by marriage to Howell Jarrett The names of some of Henrietta and John Bankston's children included a Cecelia, Lesley, Sarah, Howell... 2. John Coats
    3. I don't know who the John Coates or Coats put these lists on, but it wasn't me. There are presently 300 John Coatses in the USA, not to mention John Coates, without ever Europe. Be aware, Rootsweb is a partner of Ancestry.com and all these messages are posted there. I'm sure that's the reason you don't see that many posts. My name is John Wayne Coats. Most John Coatses use their middle initial, just like my Dad told me to do. My Grandfather was John Webster Coats, named after his grandfather, John Webster Coats. I'm sure this is why James Robert Coats started signing his name James R. Coats in 1823. He finally figured out there were a bunch of James Coatses out there.

    3. Yes, I know how to unsub/sub, but what I am saying is that it didn't work; the email format is apparently the problem. I have subbed and unsubbed from lists for many years now, but now, when I try it, nothing happens. So, if doesn't work, c'est la guerre...in any event, after 28 May, my email address will be inactivated, so someone will have to put up with the bounced traffic. 3. First you need to go to Rootsweb to unsub from the list...John Coates started the list a good number of years ago....:) but since then I don't think the lists necessarily have a sponsor...so you just go to rootsweb to sub and unsub... Ok, this Jeremiah Coats that was in IL is the the son of Ben Coats and Anna Baker of Smith County TN...he was confused in Maxene Coats Staples book with a Jeremiah Coats in MO, DNA has disproven that connection to the Jeremiah in MO... Ben Coats was the brother of William Coats wife Nancy Baker and Anna and Nancy Baker were sisters, their father was John Baker of Wilson County TN and he was born in Stafford County VA...he was a Rev Soldier but died *really old like about 98 or so* before he could prove his service and we've been trying to find the paper work, he was a Minuteman in VA, his brother or DNA proven relative was a Samuel Baker out of VA as well, who was also a Minuteman in VA, lots of Baker info at the Baker DNA site, John Baker lived a good number of years in the Logan County KY area and Poe River area of KY, I've not done a lot of research in that area, so sure there are more records, we also don't have a record of all his kids, although there is suppose to be a deed somewhere listing them,...we know that Jeremiah in IL was the son of Ben and Anna Coats because of the miscellaneouse court records in Smith County TN of Ben probate clearly shows Jeremiah was in IL at the time of Ben's death...those are online via USGenWeb Smith County TN pages...anyway...that's what we know to date....:) I was in the past in touch with one of Jeremiah's descendants who likewise put us onto the probate info in Smith County TN, so I'm confident he is the one in IL, not sure after that....:) Yes, I likewise would be interested in info on any VA Coats....:) and this Jeremiah Coats does sound interesting....:) Char On Wed, Apr 28, 2010 at 7:07 AM, Linda Coate <lcoate@ancestrees.com> wrote: > Larry, We will miss you! 3. The only Jeremiah I know of is the one in Virginia and I haven't heard anyone claim him either. I have a Benjamin W. Coats, b. 1795 in TN married to an Anna whose line I have up on my webpage. His father and grandfather are known and maybe gr. grandfather. Check and see if that info helps on my page. Linda, Sorry to break into the conversation, but as I've not been able to successfully post a notice and unsubscribe from the list, I thought I should at least let you know that I will be, unsubbed or not, leaving the list on 28 May(retiring); I don't know when I will be back as I have quite a lot to attend to. In the meantime, in case anyone has a need to reach me, I can be temporarily reached at asp1382@srcaccess.net Again, sorry for the interruption. Best of luck to you and all the others! Larry D.H. 2. John Coats
    3. The following is a quote from the book "The Coate, Coates, Coats family" by Odessa Coats Collins, 1989. The following is a Court Record, not part of the will of John Gent Coats. NEWBERRY COURT RECORD: 15 Aug 1805: James Coats of Edgefield District to William Coats of Newberry for $101.00, a tract of 41 acres in Newberry on waters of Bush River called Mathew Creek, which was originally granted to Christian Kinder for 250 acres, and by him to John Coate, deceased. Bequeached by John Coate deceased, to his son James. Signed 15 Aug 1805 Recorded 25 Jan 1806 Witness: J. B. Mitchell, John Coate Now, if that doesn't put the final stitch in it, I don't know what does. John W.

    3. I have a Jeremiah Coats whose parents are Benjamin Coats and Anna Baker who both died in Smith Co., TN. Jeremiah was b in TN around 1814/1817 and married Elizabeth Klope before 1840. They were in Smith Co in 1840 when a daughter was born and somewhere if Missouri in 1845 when a 2nd daughter was born then lived in Johnson Co. and Williamson Co.,Ill where the rest of the children were born and then in 1880 appears in the Hill Co., Tx census. I don't know where or when he died. I have a lot of missing info as I haven't been able to locate a 1850 or 1870 census or marriage license or place or time of death. Although our Jeremiahs aren't related, maybe in your research you may have have come across some information that might pertain to my Jeremiah? If I find any that might pertain to yours, I'll get in touch with you. There is an old Jeremiah Coats listed in 1810 and 1820 in Amherst, Va census. I wonder what Coats line he belongs to? I've never heard anyone claim him. One is our James Robert, another was James of Edgefield, and the other was James of Kentucky. The latter was shown in the 1850 census living by himself, while his wife Elizabeth was living with one of her daughter's family in Indiana. Unless this is James of Edgefield. 1. [COATES] James vs James
    2. John Coats
    3. After doing some reading, I find that it is clearly stated that the James mentioned in John Gent's will is James of Edgefield. His wife was named Elizabeth Scott. This line is well documented, and is totally different than James Robert's. Also, all those who claim to be descended from that line as well as Marmaduke have tested R1b1, while all descendants and relatives of James Robert have tested R1a1. It makes no difference who wrote a letter to who, or whether or not anyone is going to claim reparations for all that land that Boone and Coats bargained for, or whether or not one line or the other descended from the J&P Coats thread family or anything else. What is stated in the above paragraph is fact and not fiction. Call me if you want. 618-281-5088 or 618-407-2000.
