    1. [COATES-L] Newberry Deeds
    2. * Charlotte
    3. I made some interesting discoveries today in the Newberry County SC deeds..these deeds are different than the ones in the LDS miscellaneous court record group...so if you're researching SC keep that in mind... In 1779, Book B, p. 255, Henry Rugheley to John Coats of Scotch Creek - 100 acres on Bush Creek, adjoining Robert Ball but it is blurred...also 150 acres - originally surveyed for Samuel Chapman, also on Bush River adjoining Benjamin Alkins, Hugh Creighton and Giles Chapman...also 107 acres - originally granted to Giles Chapman - this deed was recorded in 1793 and witnessed by James Coate & John Williamson....(char's note: this deed conveyed three different pieces of land) I also found the 1765 deed of Henry Coate purchased from John Brooks, this was John Brooks original grant of 1758...these are lease and release formed deeds...looks like two deeds but they worked together...not sure exactly how but it's only one transaction...anyway, not only was that deed here but it contains 3 pages...I've not extracted all of them yet but will..the very next deed from this was from a John Coats/Coate, selling the same piece of land - John Brooks' 1758 grant and next was John Coate, wife Susannah selling the same piece of land to Peter Buffington...the same 1758 grant of John Brooks... This 1765 deed of Henry is the deed that was also witnessed by William Coate and James Coate and it is on Scotch Creek as well... 1. Re: [COATES-L] Elijah Coats
    2. Jim Hendricksen
    3. We are trying to build a database on Elijah Coates/Coats, but have very little information. What we think we know about Elijah Coates-he was married to Helena/Elenor Hickman and had two children, Pollard(1794) and Celia. He lived in Orangeburg SC at this time. (we know that Pollards mother was Helena Coats, this is from her father's will(1799), we also see references to Elijah and Elenor Coates on deeds in the same area and time frame(1801). Assuming Elenor and Helena are the same...) Elijah eventually moved to Mississippi in the early 1800's and maintained a close relationship with Austin Coates, transferring property to him on several occasions. We also find a Judge Elijah P Coates in Mississippi around this time(1825) From a previous marraige, he had other children, including Austin and possibly Sion. His father is possibly Joseph Coates, who lived by John Hickman, Elenor's father. I believe Hickman came from Curitek NC and its possible that Joseph came from the same neck of the woods. We also know that the names Pollard, Austin, Sion, Joseph and Elijah are used often in father/son relationships What information do you have putting Elijah Coats in Virginia in 1798? If Balis was born in 1798 in Virginia and Elijah was his father, then either there are two Elijah's or Elijah is not Pollard's father(else Balis would be in the will) ----- Original Message ----- From: Janet Harding <mimi@surf-ici.com> To: Jim Hendricksen <Jimmyh@hendricksencompany.com> Sent: Saturday, October 14, 2000 7:30 AM Subject: Re: [COATES-L] Elijah Coats > Jim, I don't have much on Elijah Coats for Virginia. Plese let me know if you would like to help. Also let me know if you will need copies sent to your home or if you would be able to go to the archives to do the transcribing. They will also most likly need people to make the copies that are sent to those that can't get to the archives. Iam sure that the more volunteers they have the quicker they will be to move on this and get us to work. Please email me gaylelt@uswest.net and let me know how you can help. I will then pass the list on the Carol at state level and she can let Mr. Lepore know that we are ready to get to work. Thanks all of you for your help. Gayle My name is Greg Lepore and I work at the Maryland State Archives on the Archives of Maryland Project (archivesofmaryland.net). Our project currently has around 200,000 pages of primary material online, including the Muster Rolls for the Revolutionary War. We are looking for ways to expand the site and incorporate other materials. Unfortunately we are employee-short. I would like to open a discussion with you and the county coordinators on this subject. One of the things I had in mind would be the Archives providing work space, access to computers, and access to original material in return for the results which would be posted on our site. Possible collections for inclusion would be: 1812 Muster Rolls, Civil War, etc., County Court records, and other material. I think the benefits would be many, including: a comprehensive collection of material, rather than just certain families, an authoritative location (the Archives), transcriptions along with original scans, one location for the entire State, and permanent retention of records. There is also the possibility of the Archives providing print outs of the original materials for use in remote locations. Would it be possible for you to contact the county coordinators and see if this is something that their volunteers would be interested in?
