    3. I do think that John Coate was the son of Henry Coate and the deeds are recorded back to back...but they don't refer to him as Little John Coate....I think we need to be careful with these titles...there is a deed that does refer to Little John Coate as an adjoining land owner to a Henry Coate...but that is the only reference to a *Little* John Coate...why would they refer to a *Little* John Coate and then later just John Coate...I think they could be two different people...then you go to Edgefield I think it was and some deeds refer to him as Little John, that's from memory...that just seems strange to me...so I think we need to be careful...lumping all these folks together without more info... The same applies to *Big* John Coate, there are deeds that refer to *Big* John Coate, there are also deeds that don't...and the will that has been attributed to *Big* doesn't refer to him as *Big* John Coate... I think we need to be careful in lumping everyone together...it just seems strange that sometimes they use Big and Little and yet other times they don't...that doesn't seem to fit for me... Happy New Year, btw... Char ----- Original Message ----- From: Etta Cooper Sent: Saturday, December 30, 2000 5:09 PM To: bencoate@jps.net; coats@hotmail.com; COATES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: "LittleJohn" Coate connect to Henry & Esther Willson Coate Coates Listers: As per quote in E-Mail dated 30 Dec 2000, from Linda Dudick and her assessment of data she found about "LittleJohn" and probable father Henry. "Lastly, when father Henry dies, he does not will or deed out his 200 acres that he purchased in 1765. However, this same parcel of land is sold by Little John in 1792 proving the descent from my point of view. More specifically, Henry Coate purchases 200 acres from John Brooks on July 29, 1765. It was on Scotts Creek with no adjacent families. John Brooks had purchased it on Aug 26,1757. It consisted of some buildings and pasture lands. Then, (Little) John Coate and his wife Susannah sell to Peter Buffington 200 acres on Nov. 14, 1792. The land was on Scotts Creek, and was originally purchased by John Brooks on Sep. 19, 1758 (when the transaction was completed). The filing of the deeds clinches it. Henry's purchase of 1765 was not filed until 1792 (years after Henry's death) and is filed directly before this John sells the same property to Peter Buffington according to one set of SC deed records. " Will be back to correct data I keyed in wrong about Mary Coate, 1st wife of Marmaduke "Duke" when there is time. I'm still losing letters being composed (hit the wrong key) and can never find them again. The ole blood pressure goes up and I have to take a break. My documentation will be when I can find my data after changing from FTM to Family Origins and going to the library again. Happy hunting to all and a prosperous 2001. COATS HISTORY OF HICKORY, POLK, CEDAR, DADE AND BARTON COUNTIES, MISSOURI 1889, published by Goodspeed, Pgs. 634, 635--Polk County Biographies Section Washington D. Coats, a prominent tiller of the soil of Jackson Township, who resides half a mile from Sharon Station, was born in Henry County, Tenn., September 30, 1825, emigrating to Missouri with his parents in the fall of 1833, and settling in what is now Polk county. He is the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Coats) Coats (cousins), both natives of Tennessee, and born in 17795 and 1800 respectively. They were married about 1819, and afterward moved to West Tennessee, where they remained until 1833, when they settled in what is now Polk County, Mo. He followed farming in that county, and in 1859 took a herd of cattle of about fifty head to California. He died in that State in 1862. The mother died on the old home place June 30, 1870. They were the parents of eight children, four now living. Washington D. Coats attained his growth in Polk County, and was married in that county in 1849, to Miss Matilda Rook, a native of Tennessee, born in 1832, and who came to Missouri with her parents at an early age. After marriage Mr. Coats followed agricultural pursuits until the breaking out of the war, when he enlisted in Company H, Phelps' Regiment Missouri Infantry Volunteers, and served six months, and was mustered out in May, 1862. During his time of service he was in the battle of Pea Ridge. He enlisted in the Enrolled Militia, Company I, in 1862, serving six months, at which time the company was disbanded. He afterward served four months under Lieut. Roberts at Bolivar. After the war he returned home and engaged in farming. He is post commander of Phil. Sheridan Post No. 398, G. A. R. and is also a member of the Baptist Church. To his marriage were born twelve children: Newton Marion, William Henry, Thomas B., James A.; Rebecca E., now Mrs. Neil; Mary, now Mrs. Patterson; Frantz S., Abraham L., John W., Edward S.; Sarah E., now Mrs. Slatter; and Charley C. Mrs. Coats is also a member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Coats is well-read man, and takes great interest in educational matters. The paternal grandfather of our subject, Benjamin W. Coats, was born in Virginia, and died in Tennessee about 1840. His wife died about 1847. The maternal grandfather was probably born in Virginia, and died in Tennessee about 1835, and his wife in 1840. I enjoy hearing from you and hope to get to see you when we come to California next June to see our grandson Michael graduate from highschool. I still have some "Coats" info that I copied in South Caroline--and am ashamed that I have had it so long. I will try to get that off in the New Year!! I know this was a special Christmas for you with that little granddaughter--there is nothing like being a grandmother in my opinion!! We had all eight of ours here for the holidays. 3. Here's the info I have on Nathaniel Coats for you. Hope it helps. "Nathaniel was the High Sheriff of Wilkes Co, GA from 1786-1790. He was involved in deed transactions on the following dates: 1772/4, 200 acres in St. Paul Co., GA, 1/18/1778 and 1/28/1778, 200 acres in Wilkes Co., GA; 1784, 200 acres in Wilkes Co., GA; 1784, 287 1/2 acres in Washington Co., GA and 1785, 250 acres in Wilkes Co., GA. He received some of his land ( I think it was the 287 and 1/2 acres) in Georgia due to his service during the Revolutionary War. He sold the 287 and 1/2 acres on Buffalo Creek, in what had become Green Co., GA on Feb 17, 1787 to Oliver Wilay. Nathaniel was of Wilkes Co. at the time. In 1787, he gave Washington, Wilkes Co. a mineral spring which became quite popular. His bequest was based on him becoming a town commisioner. The property was never allowed to be sold. In 1788 he donated land on which the town grammer school was relocated and called an "acedemy" on Chalybeate Spring one half miles south of Washinton in Wilkes Co. (C-1790, 1919)" At 01:01 PM 12/24/00 -0500, you wrote: >Hello list, according to documentation received from the Georgia Research >Consortium, Nathaniel Coates was a participant in the Revolutionary War - >"Adamson, Greenberry, married Sarah Coats dau. of Nathaniel & Lucinda Coats >(Rev.
