What does your research show for Benjamin Johnson Coate? Char ----- Original Message ----- From: Ed Astleford Sent: Sunday, January 14, 2001 12:05 PM To: COATES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [COATES-L] Benjamin Johnson Coate I am a descendant of Benjamin Johnson Coate and his wife Mary Jones. Their daughter, Sarah Tucker Coate married John J. Coppock. Since some of this information may be from the Coate/Coppock genealogy. I have more faith in my Mother's own research on the Coppocks. Well, this is interesting...Char ----- Original Message ----- From: Roger Crabtree Sent: Tuesday, January 09, 2001 4:19 AM To: GACOLUMB-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [GACOLUMB] Recorded Land Transactions Hi Joe and Group, Joe, thanks for the clear explanation of Richmond, Columbia, and St. Paul. I haven't looked at many deeds in Columbia Co., but I have looked at deed books in other GA counties. It isn't unusual to find transactions for land located in one county recorded in another county. Sometimes the Grantor or the Grantee didn't live in the county where the land was located, so the deed may have been recorded in the home county of the Grantor or Grantee. Sometimes the Grantee lived nearer the county seat of a neighboring county than to his own, so he took the deed to be recorded in the closer location. Just one more reason for always checking neighboring counties. Pat Crabtree Moncks Corner, SC ==== GACOLUMB Mailing List ==== Suggestions or comments? This from an Abernathy Researcher...Char ----- Original Message ----- From: Valeria Wigington To: * Charlotte Sent: Monday, January 08, 2001 4:39 PM Subject: Re: Abernathy family site Good evening! I am quoting from Summers' book on the Coates. COATS--John (known as "Little John"), was the original settler on the lands on which the town of Newberry is located. He gave to the town and the county two acres on which to erect a court house and other public buildings, and it is the same where is now the public square and old court House. This grant was made September 8, 1789, seven(?) years after the county was formed, to James Mayson, Philemon Waters, Robert rutherford, William Caldwell, and Jacob Roberts Brown, who were then the county judges, "a lot of two acres lying on a small hill West of the new dwelling house of John Coates...." John Coate's wife was named Susanna. He died about 1802. Two sons, Marmaduke and Henry, lived in the village. Henry married Elizabeth Long, daughter of Benjamin Long, and after her death he married her sister, Polly Long. Another John Coats died about 1803, his will being dated May 25, 1799. He left widow, Mary, and children: Samuel, John, William, James, Mary Pemberton, Katy Casselle, and Rebecca. Thomas Coate made will October 6, 1799, and died in the year 1800. He left widow, Sarah Ann, and children: James, Ann, Katy, Mary, William, Jesse, and Sarah. John Coate (of Georgia) died about 1803, and left widow, Mar, and children: Mary(wife of Robert Ramage), Rebecca (wife of Thomas Morgan), Anna (wife of Benjamin Lake.) Old John Coate died about 1802-1803, left widow, Rachel, and children: James, Sampson, Wright. Wright Coate made will Nov. 18, 1808, and died in same year. He left widow, Mary, and children: Frederick, Daniel, and Susan. Exr: John Belton O'neall. William Coate, Elizabeth Coate, Jesse Coate, and Sarah ( Coate) Summers, Hardy Fluker and his wife, Sophia (Coate) Fluker, of Edgefield Co., were some of the heirs of "Little John " Coate. One William Coate made will July, 1816, and died about 1822. He left widow, Mary, and children" John , Mary (married a Taylor), Sarah (wife of Patrick McKennan), Margaret, Ann, Dorothy, William, Reuben, Jesse. James Coate died in 1806 leaving widow, Rebecca, and children: Nancy (she died young), and Mary (married Joseph Hall). Mrs. Ann Coate made will March 20, 1805, and died same year. Her legatees were as follows: Daughter, Jean(she married a Vardaman), Nancy Cannon, Sarah Cannon,--sons: , by a former husband, George Johnson and Levi Johnson; grand-daughter, Mary Koone; grandson, Daniel Johnson. Samuel Coate died in 1807, and left widow, Mary and other legatees as follows; James Wilson, James Reeder, James Steadman, John Williams, John Taylor, Jesse Neel. Deliliah Coate. Captain Henry Coate (son of "Little John" ), died January, 1828, and left widow, Polly (Long) Coate, and children: Amelia (wife of John Lindsey), Elizabeth (wife of William G. Nance who died just before death of her father), John, James M., George R., Benjamin F., Amanda (she married Benjamin Cochran) William H., and Barbara. Benjamin F. and Amanda Cochran moved to Richmond , Va. Amelia Lindsey was the only child by his first marriage to Elizabeth Long. the widow, Polly, afterwards married John Gaskins, and descendants moved to MS. The reason I say, the location of the group of Coats might be a give or take area, is because, on the Mottes map showing Jacob Brooks and Gilder, that is the Bush River/Big Creek area...and I just think Mottes may have indicated Scotts Creek if it would have been there...so that group could be below Scotts Creek, that is still in the area of the Quaker Meeting House etc...Linda, I believe has a plat or deed, which I have also, that shows Frederick Nance with land adjoing a William Coats as well...and Nance's land is on Scotts Creek...but I'm haven't gotten to that plat or deed yet and I don't recall if we knew which side of Scotts Creek it was on...Char ----- Original Message ----- From: * Charlotte Sent: Monday, January 08, 2001 4:54 PM To: COATES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [COATES-L] map updates I've added a few more to those maps... Also Michael Hunt's land on those Union County Historical Society maps is not in the correct place...that plat clearly shows that it borders the Bush River and one of the Adjoining land owners was William Coate...so I've put it in what I think is the correct area...although...there might be some take as to where on the Bush River that whole group is... There is a William, James and John in that group on the Bush River... So.....I'm just adding the info as I page one by one through those archive documents...it's a slow process...but maybe once I kinda get a feel for where there all are I can do some enlarged areas like the Scotts creek area and add what Mottes has as well...I've also tried to add names to places that I find in Mottes.... And last but certainly not least...there is another Henry Coate in Laurens County SC date of 1769, he's the one that had the land next to Ann Hagen...so, we have Henry on Scotts Creek, 1765 - Henry in Laurens County, 1769, Henry on Goose Pond, Capt Henry Coates and the land records I have for him in 1818 places him on the Saluda River in 1818 adjoining Benjamin Long...and Henry that married Mary adjoining Little John Coats' land...also I think it is Summers that names Capt Henry Coate as the son of Little John, not sure of that...but I've not seen anything that says Henry had three or a first wife named Mary...his second wife is always called Polly and her sister was his first wife, Elizabeth or Priscilla I think it was...
