Yes, I've seen this before about the calendar..didn't the Quaker Calendar start in March as well..so that could also explain some of those dates...etc...Char ----- Original Message ----- From: culpepper Sent: Saturday, February 03, 2001 7:55 AM To: * Charlotte; COATES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: calendar dates confusion Hi ... I came across this bit of information ( you more experienced researchers probably already know but it was new to me ) and I thought I'd forward it. It's about the change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar and how that affects dates in geneological research. In my case this was in the Duke of Marlborough information http://laura.chinet.com/html/titles11.html Just fyi in case anyone might want the info. sherri coats culpepper >>>> There are a couple of things going on here, I suspect. Between 1583 and 1752, there is this little annoying problem called "Old Style Dates." England and her colonies finally adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752. Before then, the official start date of the year was March 25. So March 24, 1702 was followed the next day by March 25, 1703. This is very weird to us in the 20th century. It results in confusion when talking about dates between January 1st and March 24th within this range of years. It is further exacerbated by the fact that well before the official change in 1752 of the new year from March 25th to January 1st, the "New Style" new year was becoming increasing popular. Furthermore, because of the error of the Julian calendar there was a discrepancy between the actual dates in each calendar. <<<< ----- Original Message ----- From: * Charlotte <coats@hotmail.com> To: <COATES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 03, 2001 12:16 AM Subject: [COATES-L] Newburyport 1790 Census > http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/8028/cen1790.htm > > > David Coates here...

Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

> > > ==== COATES Mailing List ==== > To > unsubscribe, send the command "unsubscribe" to > COATES-L-request@rootsweb.com (if in mail mode) or > COATES-D-request@rootsweb.com (if in digest mode.) >

Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Mary Gaunt married a Coates...but which Coates? Char ----- Original Message ----- From: Valeria Wigington Sent: Friday, February 02, 2001 8:34 AM To: Charlotte Coats; JCoats5982@aol.com Subject: Gaunt I meant to sent this to you two. In case I didn't send the Gaunt info. This is it: Gaunt, Israel, d 1798 m Hannah ch. James , Jacob, Joseph Patsy m. Abernathy* Hannah m. Mooney Rebecca m. Gilbert Mary m. Coates* (Hannah had dau by ear. marriage) farmer& blacksmith 627 acres Hello all, The other day I sent the family of Israel Gaunt d. 1798 whose daughter Patsy married Geo. Abernathy. This story from NEWBERRY COUNTY IN THE REV. is about her sister Hannah. Thought you might want to read it just for a bit of history. HANNAH GAUNT An old Quaker by the name of Israel Gaunt lived somewhere in the vicinity of Newberry. It was repoarted that he had a sizeable sum of money. So, one of "Bloody Bill" Cunningham's lieutenants, named Hubbs, along with two associates, decided to help themselves to Israel's money. The three Tories rode up to the Gaunt house one evening, asked to spend the night and were refused. Hubbs went to the kitchen door where he found Mrs. Gaunt standing in the doorway. He asked for a drink of water, and when she turned away to get it for him, Hubbs jumped into the house with his pistol drawn. Old Israel, hearing the commotion, locked the doors. But Hubbs fot the moment had the upper hand, that is until Hannah, Israel's daughter came to the rescue. A lumbering, husky woman of imminent proportions, she knocked the weapon out of Hubb's hands and threw the Tory to the floor, She held him down , but he kicked her with one of his spurs. She was cut deeply, probably on the arm, but with the aid of her father, Hubbs was finally subdued and with his hands and feet tied. But Israel was wounded by one of Hubb's men, who fired his gun through an open wiindow, and another ball, fired by the third Tory, grazed Hannah just above her eye. But the Gaunts were successful in definding themselves, and probably turned the three Tories over to the Whigs. After the Rev. Hannah married an individual by the name of Mooney. From all repoarts, Hannah was one of teh "kindest and most benevolent of women". Hannah died about the age of fifty, and her grandson "a worthy and excellent man" was living in Newberry sometime before the War Between the States. I found a Wigington connection with Quakers and will pass on some info from them on the subject of Quakers. Can you guess that I love history???!!! FYI...thanks Steve....Char ----- Original Message ----- Subject: DCO- Newbies-beware This is for the newbies and was sent to me from another list. Everyone beware of the scams.I know this is long, but worth it if it will save you money. Gloria THE UPDATE FIRST I'll begin here so those of you who already know about Family Discovery (and their sister site, GenSeekers) can be on your merry way .... A new letter from them is circulating now... one that promotes a service that sounds like something that as a genealogist, you're really afraid to pass up (those records... all those records!). The newest message will probably have a subject line of "Thanks for your help Genealogist..." Are you concerned that you'll be missing out by not signing up with Family Discovery? Would you like to know what you're missing if you don't get in on the "special offer"? Click on this link <http://www.familydiscovery.com/members/>. It will take you directly inside their site where you can walk around and have a really good look. Once done, please spread the word. Don't let other cousins, friends and newbies get suckered by these scam artists. I also want to let you know that Gene Olson has done some research and found the following current list of sites related to Family Discovery in one way or another: genealogyfinders.com genealogyfinders.net aboent.com familydiscovery.com genseeker.com genealogy-express.com If these sites are anything like Family Discovery, hide your wallet, checkbook, credit card, and run! :) He has now set up a message board on his site for discussion of Family Discovery and her sister sites. Want to find out more or comment about the subject?... head for Gene's Anti Family Discovery site at <http://www.compuright.net/familydiscovery/>. FOR THE NEWEST COUSINS Okay, so I did this backwards, the newest news first. However, please know that the subject of Family Discovery is NOT new. To save time, this is a copy and paste from the main portion of my message to everyone on January 19th. It lays out the whole story. I post it here again just for you newest cousins... Family Discovery is just what I said in the last sentence... rip-offs. This is becoming an old subject among those of us who have been doing online genealogy for a while, but you need to be made aware... Family Discovery links their pages to Rootsweb sites and archive pages, GenWeb sites, and privately owned sites ... sites on which all the information is already FREE! They are doing this without permission and are currently under investigation. Please, heed the warning. A new ad from them is going around telling you that if you'll join by Friday, 2 Feb, you'll pay "a one time access fee of ONLY $49.00 with absolutely nothing to pay EVER again..." While I'm at it, I'd better warn you of their newest, sister site... GenSeeker, in case another message is floating around that I'm not aware of yet. Though I haven't heard any more about it from anyone (yet), it's still a site owned by the same person(s) and building itself under the same premise as Family Discovery. I've been to their newest site and seen what they're up to. Instead of the "special rate" you're charged $20 more. However, when clicking on their "freesearch link," the unwary customer is taken to the familydiscovery.com site. GenSeeker describes itself as "the most comprehensive easy to use collection of online records ever compiled." Of course it is, if they link to every free website they can find! Save your money and do the search yourself! You DO NOT need to pay for a service that is already free if you know where to look. If you need assistance, send a message to the list and state in the top line of your message that you're a newbie needing help; you'll probably get more than you can handle! :) Gene Olson has an Anti-FamilyDiscovery.com update list from his website. He has been working to close down both sites and is still on their trail. You newbies to online genealogy would be wise to go to his site and read up on this company so you won't be ripped off. Click on the following link and you'll be taken directly to his site: <http://www.compuright.net/familydiscovery>. Gene's new email address is <gene_olson@bigfoot.com>. His toll-free number is 1-877-319-9699. I tried to access familydiscovery.com just a moment ago. It seems the entire site is now password protected. Hmmm... I wonder why...

Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Hi, All, I'm back after being off the list for a while. Today, I got the following message from a family member. I hope that someone on this list can help her. > On the 1850 Census of Hall County, GA there is M. E. Coates 18 Female > in the house of David Henderson McCleskey. > > D. H. McCleskey 60 M SC > M. " 65 F GA > M. E. Coates 18 F GA > > Do you have any idea who this person might be? D.H. McCleskey is David Henderson McCleskey, s/o James McCleskey and Isabella Rhea. He was born 2 August 1783 in Abbeville Dist., SC. He would have been 67 instead of 60 ad the message shows. M. McCleskey is Martha Ivey Jarrett, d/o Howell Jarrett and Jane Smiley Coates. She was born 9 April 1875 in Wilkes Co., GA. Jane Smiley Coates is believed to have been the daughter of Nathaniel Coates and Martha Lamar. The M.E. Coates of the census record could have been some kind of maternal relative of Martha Ivey Jarrett McCleskey. Does anyone know who she was? Margaret McCleskey, Arlington, TX

Quakers have been in SC since 1666, and few groups have had such an impact for their size as have these simple, peaceful Friends. From the founding of Charleston in 1670 until the establishment of the Church of England in 1705, the Friends played a major role ------------ The total number of Quaker families throughout the 175 yr. period from 1666 to 1840 was only around 1000 in both SC and Ga., with a total of around 9000 inidviduals. Nearly 1900 of these 2000 families are identified in this book About two-thirds of these Quakers were located in the Piedmont region during the brief period from 1750 to 1820. In 1801 most Friends began leaving for the Midwest because of their opposition to slavery. By 1840 there were no Meetings still strong enough to have regularly scheduled worship and many of the remaining members joined other churches. By 1900 there were probably no more than a dozen Quakers left in SC and Ga. While Quaker records are generally more detailed and more complete than those of other churches for this period of time, they have been subjected to loss by fires, floods etc. Most of the surviving records for SC and Ga are housed atGuilford College in Greensboro, NC , at Haverford College in Pa, and at Wilmington College in Ohio. The author will pay a reward of $1000 for the lost records of Wateree Meeting at Camden. Some persons entered the Society of Friends in SC and Ga by convincement, or by applying for membership. A number of these appear to have been attracted by sympathy with the Quaker testimonies against war and slavery and by the Friends high personal moral standards. Some became Quakers because they wished to marry a Quaker. It should be noted that a number of those applying for membership in SC had been born Quakers but disowned by Meetings in other colonies, and were merely seeking restoration here. There were many "broken families" in Sc. with one parent still a Quaker, and one still disowned. (This is very interesting!!)----The most prominent Quaker at Wateree , Samuel Wyly, died in 1768 with personal property appraised at 8135 pounds. Surprisingly, he OWNED 25 SLAVES. (there follows a quite extensive list of possessions, including books valued at 30 pounds, Quaker classics. He was a successful merchant and surveyor) A number of Upcountry Friends combined a service occupation with their farming. Thus, Samuel Russell and Israel Gaunt did blacksmithing, John Wright,Sr. was a shoemaker, John Edmundson and Joseph Smith manufactured screw augers, William O'Neal taught school, Thomas Pearson made saddles and harnesses, Samuel Wyly and John Belton were surveyors, and Samuel Pearson and Jesse Minton were millwrights. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are Beltons on the Bush River Baptist records. --------------------------------------- Enough for now.

Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
