They may ha This information was provided by a kind soul on a newsgroup I sub to: I have "freely" borrowed from his message and edited..... Are you missing a Civil War-era ancestor from Tennessee,Ohio,Indiana,Kentucky, and other states? Keep in mind some men went across to bordering states to sign up. So I would check if my ancestor was also from Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, etc. That ancestor may have been aboard the steamship Sultana when it exploded and sank 9 miles north of Memphis, TN on 27 April 1865. Nearly 1,500 of the 2,300 aboard ultimately died. Now you can search a *FREE* database of 2,090 known passengers of the Sultana, most of whom were paroled Union soldiers from the states of OH, TN, IN, MI, KY and WVa who had formerly been imprisoned at either Andersonville (Georgia) or Cahaha (Alabama). The database also lists the names of every known crewman and civilian passenger! (c100 additional names!) Who were not Union affiliates. http://www.rapidnet.com/~greg/Sultana/Sultana.html ==== KYFAYETT Mailing List ==== Search the KYFAYETT List Archives: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=KYFAYETT ============================== Search more than 150 million free records at RootsWeb! http://searches.rootsweb.com/<br clear=all><hr>Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at <a href="http://explorer.msn.com">http://explorer.msn.com</a><br></p>

    3. No, they're two different persons. Gabriel Harwell Coats was born before Gabriel Garrett Coats by about 10-15 years I think. I know they knew each other as both were at the Ezekiel Jones-? estate sale in SC in 1814; both of them bought goods at the sale. Gabriel Harwell had a grandson later named Harwell Gabriel Coats.. I've been trying to find out the parents of Gabriel Harwell Coats on the premise there must be a "tie" somewhere in here as the two gabriels are the only gabriels I've found in all the coats, coates records in the southern states. There is one other Gabriel Coats, born 1842 but he lived in Ohio or Indiana all his life expect for his civil war service travels.I think I'm going to be forced to go to Camden,SC and look in the " Coats vertical file of Flat Rock" at the Museum. There is such a file and I'd like to see what's in it.Darn a man that leaves no trails behind him....... grampajoec

    3. ------=_NextPart_001_0003_01C08FA8.C2A2C9E0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable ----- Original Message ----- Subject: Newberry Jan.21, 1939 Article taken from the Spartanburg Herald-Journal newspaper; Newberry, Jan.21.-ZACK WRIGHT, president of the Newberry Cotton Mill = and a member of the state highway commission has been named chairman of a= committee to formulate plans for the observance of Newberry's Sesquicen= tennial , which is scheduled to take place on it's 150th anniversary in M= arch. History shows that the town of Newberry was incorporated in March, = 1789. Looking backward one finds that some 40 years or more before the to= wn organization, settlers began to arrive in this section and by 1762, th= e vicinity was pretty well settled. PROPERTY DONATED The beginning of the town is dated from the time when property was = given to erect the public buildings. For some time the county court , a= judicial organization composed of 11 justices which was done away with i= n 1899, argued concerning the location of the public building or a courth= ouse and finally a present was made by 'Little John' COATES of two acres on which to erect a public building. The court decided to build on the pr= operty offered by Coates and thus began the city of Newberry. From a small shop with only a few small homes and one store, the place= then called "Coates Shop', there has been a gradual growth. Little proba= bly did the early settlers think that Newberry would expand and grow to = it's present size. Hardly did they conceive of the schools, churches, col= lege, hospital, libraries, theaters, newspapers, three cotton mills , man= y big business concerns; of charities and benevolences, social groups, of= traffic and trade; of a Newberry whose slogan has become 'The City of Friendly Folks'. LAND FOR COURT From the annals of Newberry, all account of the giving of this land fo= r a courthouse is shown as follows; "At March court, 1789, present, ROBERT RUTHERFORD, JAMES MAYSON, JACOB R= OBERTS BROWN, PHILEMON WATERS, WILLIAM CALDWELL, MERCER BABB and THOMA= S W. WATERS, JUSTICES, it appears from an entry that John Coates made a p= resent to the county of two acres, on which to erect a courthouse, which = was accepted by the vote of all present except; ROBERT RUTHERFORD who obj= ected by reason the place was not centrical. Col. PHILEMON WATERS and WI= LLIAM CALDWELL were directed to lay out two acres of land , which they di= d and returned a platt. It is embraced by the parallegram made by Caldwel= l St. on the east, Pratt St. south, McKibben St. west and Boyce St. nort= h. =20 Titles were made and MR. COATES was called into court and received the t= hanks of the justices for this liberality". Newberry is the home of approx. 10,000 persons, many of them descendan= ts of pioneers of 150 years ago.<br clear=3Dall><hr>Get your FREE downloa= d of MSN Explorer at <a href=3D"http://explorer.msn.com">http://explorer.= ms

    3. Dear List, I am in the UK researching COATES in Yorkshire, that why I am a member, plus some ancestors moved to New York State in the 1840's. I have a question for US researchers, when researching your family lines are you interested in all members of the family i.e. siblings, aunts, cousins etc or is your only goal to extend your knowledge of your direct male line? I ask because I often find the language used to describe your research so different to how I do mine. This is not a criticism just an interested person. No offence intended. In the UK most people would describe themselves as Family Historians and not Genealogists as these people just research pedigrees. I find that this causes confusion when US researchers ask for help in UK. So much for a shared language. 3. Folks when I think of sources, I think of the original documents...unfortunately, as stated in that Bogus Genealogy article at Ancestry...<g>...isn't that were all those ged files are including mine...anyway, the major trouble with prior genealogies is the fact that in many cases, there isn't any source material cited so you can check it out... Joe pointed out in an email to me that there are a good many errors that are stated but no reference...he also stated that somewhere along the line you run into making a judgment call...that is sorta true to a certain extent...however, it is much better to show the research and documentation and then state there are several theories or the old theory is such and such...if you make a judgment call but don't point out the other possibilities that is not going to benefit anyone in the future either...I suspect with the web, documentation in the future isn't going to be a problem...the problem is going to be the conflicting theories...and unless documentation can be found to solve the theories the family lines will just remain open...this is what there is, this is what is thought and I don't think you can go beyond that...it is indeed a shame that families lines will reach this point... In my McKay line...Robert McKay sr, is said to have come from Freehold NJ, says that in a PA deed, but no other records can be found for him in Freehold NJ, so that is stated in the genealogy...he is said to have come from Scotland, but no documenation has been found of that...and that's the way it's stated in the genealogy.... To do otherwise, as in the Bogus article could easily lead many down the wrong path and as such maybe research in an area where records could be found are not even searched... So, those areas searched that don't produce documents should be stated as well... Remember those in the future may have a mound of papers available via the net... 1. [COATES-L] calendar dates confusion
    2. culpepper
    3. Hi ... I came across this bit of information ( you more experienced researchers probably already know but it was new to me ) and I thought I'd forward it. It's about the change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar and how that affects dates in geneological research. In my case this was in the Duke of Marlborough information http://laura.chinet.com/html/titles11.html Just fyi in case anyone might want the info. sherri coats culpepper >>>> There are a couple of things going on here, I suspect. Between 1583 and 1752, there is this little annoying problem called "Old Style Dates." England and her colonies finally adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752. Before then, the official start date of the year was March 25. So March 24, 1702 was followed the next day by March 25, 1703. This is very weird to us in the 20th century. It results in confusion when talking about dates between January 1st and March 24th within this range of years. It is further exacerbated by the fact that well before the official change in 1752 of the new year from March 25th to January 1st, the "New Style" new year was becoming increasing popular. Furthermore, because of the error of the Julian calendar there was a discrepancy between the actual dates in each calendar. <<<< ----- Original Message ----- From: * Charlotte <coats@hotmail.com> To: <COATES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 03, 2001 12:16 AM Subject: [COATES-L] Newburyport 1790 Census > http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/8028/cen1790.htm > > > David Coates here...<br clear=all><hr>Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at <a href="http://explorer.msn.com">http://explorer.msn.com</a><br></p> > > > ==== COATES Mailing List ==== > To > unsubscribe, send the command "unsubscribe" to > COATES-L-request@rootsweb.com (if in mail mode) or > COATES-D-request@rootsweb.com (if in digest mode.) >
