Charlotte; Interesting. When I started research in 1992, I went to PHL and visited. They had seven (7) files on the Coats-Coates family. I made some copies, some of which I sent to Linda. Some people I've talked to have said some papers have disapeared over the years. I'm sure any serious Coats researcher would find papers of interest there. Well, I was requesting a copy of that old Coats genealogy which they had published in one of their journals...but never got a response from them...I'm also finding that PA not sure all entities, really would rather have you physically visit them...but that just isn't possible in all cases...especially now with net etc...it just seems they should make their info more available via the net.... http://www.psnw.com/~concord4/Land%20Titles.htm Take a look at the paragraph just before the heading of *Grants & Patents*...this could be an explanation as to why the various spellings within the same documents....most interesting.... It appears the name is spelled in the body of the deed the way it was pronounced but the signature was spelled the way it should be spelled....Coats/Coate/Coates may have been pronouced Cote/Cotes ...not sure I can get a Cole or Coles out of that...but Coots for Coats would work... Isn't that interesting...not sure I'm real clear on the part about which spelling to always check for... This just all gets more and more confusing...<g>... We are searching for Ann(e) Coates born April 26, 1807 in Yorkshire, England. Through the IGI we have found two possbilities with christening dates close by. 1) Anne christened May 10, 1807 in Stainburn, Yorkshire born to John and Anne Coates. 2) Ann christened May 5, 1807 in Gunnerside Wesleyand Chapel, Swaledale, Yorkshire. We know that she was in the USA by 1835 when she married Daniel Allen in Ohio. We are searching for siblings/parents. I would appreciate any connection or direction you might be able to give. I will be in England in two weeks and would like to narrow my search even more if I could. Thanks to all...

Here another...this particular series of books are like the WPA records you see. The PA and NJ Archives are two that I know of, that transcribed a lot of their records into these series books...I've not heard that series 3 is any more valuable than the others but...these are really old books...the LA library has them and some have been used so much that they have had to take them off the shelves... Another reason why PA Archive should put their info on the net...<g>... Anyway, boy, I'm really surprised at the amount of stuff on Ebay related to genealogy...i.e. lots of cds there.... Lets clarify something first. We know that Elenor was married to Elijah, and we know that Helena Hickman was married to a Coats and had two children(Pollard and Emilia) We do not know that Elenor and Helena are the same person and if they are, then we have to assume that she is not the mother of Austin and Elijah is not the father of Pollard and Emilia. Furthermore, if Elenor and Helena are the same and married to Elijah, then we would need to assume that there would be two males under 10 in 1800 or one under 10 and one 10-16. So, I am not sure that Elenor and Helena are the same person Did you ever get a copy of the will or diary? -----Original Message----- From: Duroblan@aol.com [mailto:Duroblan@aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, February 21, 2001 11:05 AM To: COATES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [COATES-L] ELIJAH COATES / ELENOR HICKMAN Hi fellow Coates researchers, I am searching for information about Elijah Coates (Believed to have been born in VA moved possibly to NC then, Barnwell, SC. Notice the $15.00 for mail in plus the regular charge of $2.00 per page... Char ----- Original Message ----- From: LaniMacA@aol.com Sent: Wednesday, February 21, 2001 11:08 AM To: coats@hotmail.com Subject: Re: [PHILLY-ROOTS-L] Fw: Microfilm Wills are filed on the county level, not with the state. Early Phila. wills are at the Register of Wills Archives at 3101 Market St. (same building as the Phila. City Archives, but a different office). If you've already got the year and file number (from the published books of Will abstracts), you can skip the second paragraph below. Unless you go to the Wills Archives in person, requests for early wills should be mailed to the Register of Wills at City Hall (they'll then be sent by interoffice mail to the Archives). WILLS & ADMINISTRATIONS (PHILA. CITY & CO.) From 1682 to the present are available through: Register of Wills, Main Office, City Hall, Room 180, Phila., PA 19107; early ones are at the Archives for the Register of Wills at 3101 Market St. (same bldg. as the City Archives but not the same office). First visit the Index Room in City Hall to get all the numbers (Book, page, file and year) for the particular Will: Register of Wills, Index Room, City Hall, Room 185, Phila., PA. 19107. When you search the indexes be sure to write down BOTH the reference # to the original will (e.g., file #124 of 1798) AND the reference to the books (e.g., Book H on page 435). If they don't find the actual Will/Admin folder you can still find some information by using the transcriptions in the Will/Admin. books. These books are scattered between the Archives and City Hall (and some are lost forever). I've heard that if you let them know it is for family research, they won't charge you like they do for someone who is there working for a company. The Register of Wills Archives will pull the folders of up to three Wills/Administrations for free for family researchers; any additional files pulled are $3 each. Take your checkbook if you have a long list to search! Charge for copies is $2 per page at the Archives if you go in person. For mail-in requests, $15 PLUS the $2 per page charge. The form says to send a LARGE self-addressed stamped envelope, for faster services. If you want all the papers with the File No., make sure you tell them that. Otherwise, if you just say to send a copy of the Will, they will send only a copy of the Will but not the Letters, Petitions, Inventory, or other papers that may be filed with it.
