I was wondering if anyone has any information on a Charles Byers Coates born 1881 in Ennis, County Clare Ireland. He migrated to Australia and became a pioneer of the early Australian Film Industry. He was my grandfather. Does anyone have any information on the Irish branch of Coates? Jude

More.... ----- Original Message ----- From: Jerry & Sue Appleton Sent: Monday, March 12, 2001 6:18 AM To: * Charlotte Subject: Re: Little John Coates/Susannah Ennis Here are our theories and dates: What we believe is that Susannah Ennis (daughter of Hannah Spencer and Mr. Ennis) who married Little John Coates may have had a sister. In other words, Hannah Spencer Ennis Gaunt(t) who died in 1813 in Newberry County, SC (wife of Israel Gaunt(t) who died in 1798 may have other children with Mr. Ennis besides Susannah. However, in Hannah's will of 1813, she mentions Susannah Coates by name and then mentions a granddaughter, Patsy (Appleton) Abernathy and great-grandson, Grigsby Appleton. We believe that Hannah had a daughter (who most likely had died prior to 1813) tthat may have married William Appleton (who died prior to 1799) This Wililam was Martha or Patsy's father and Grigsby's grandfather. Martha/Patsy Appleton married George Abernathy prior to 1799. Grigsby Appleton was born 1795 in Abbeville District, SC. We are also looking for Grigsby's parents (perhaps his mother was a Grigsby family member?)d The patriarch of this family was a Thomas Appleton who ! arrived in the area in the 1760's from Frederick County, MD and received a land grant in 1774 on Indian Creek of Little Saluda River. Thanks for passing on our request to your list even though the connection is slim. Perhaps someone seeing this will note a connection of families in Newberry County, SC. Interesting. My grandmother, Lavenia Gay Coates, ggranddaughter of Pollard Hickman Coates, always claimed to be part Indian, I believe it was 1/8 Indian. It would almost have to come from her mother's mother, Sarah Bethany, whose parents I do not know. I do know she was born in the late 1840's in Mississippi. -----Original Message----- From: * Charlotte [mailto:coats@hotmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 06, 2001 4:16 PM To: COATES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [COATES-L] National Archive - southwest region FYI...I just got an email back from the National Archive in TX...where you send for Indian records...they tell me you can now fax an order to them and use credit cards... The Dawes Rolls and Final Dawes Rolls are for the Five Civilized Tribes mostly in OK...but there are scattered Indian tribes all over it seems...these records pertain, I believe, to those Indians that moved to OK...although I've seen that the Dawes records also covered the Sioux in SD....so even though your ancestory may not be in these records...it is possible there are in other Indian records, not covered by these records... ----- Original Message ----- From: Jerry & Sue Appleton Sent: Saturday, March 10, 2001 2:32 PM To: coats@hotmail.com Subject: Little John Coates/Susannah Ennis I am researching Grigsby Appleton who is mentioned in Hannah Spencer Ennis Gauntt's will as either a grandson or greatgrandson (though I believe it to be a grandson).... also mentioned in her will is Susannah Coates, her daughter by an earlier marriage. I am interested in learning more about Susannah Ennis Coates who married Little John Coates to determine if she was married previously to an Appleton and therefore, Grigsby Appleton and Patsy Abernathy (born Martha Appleton who married George Abernathy) are her children or not.... can you help me with this? To all Coate/Coat/Coates/Coats Family researchers: First of all, I want to express my appreciation to all on this list who have helped me connect my Coate family to the ones known. I would never have made the connections without you. In the past two months there have been more cousin connections made and I'm still searching for known cousins. Many of these Coate descents I've never met. We were scattered over the country and unable to visit and get to know these family members. 1. My mother was Eva "Joy" Adaline Coate (m "Joe" McMillan)b 1920 Sardis, Pushmataha Co, OK, d 1992 Heavener, LeFlore Co, OK. She was the dau of Charles Abbott Coate (m Matilda Frances Woolsey), b 1871 Arkansas Co, AR, d 1954 Hassyampa(Buckeye), Maricopa Co, AZ. 2. Charles was the son of Jesse Lovelace Coate (m Isabel Clampett Evans Bunyard)b 1840 AL, d abt 1879 Rains Co, TX. Jesse was the son of Marmaduke "Duke" Coate (m (1)Mary Coate, (2nd ours) Nancy Rotton)b 1789 SC, d aft 1860 Clark Co, AL. 3. Marmaduke "Duke" was the son of "LittleJohn" Coate (m Susannah Ennis) b abt 1740 NJ, d 1802 SC. So--our known descent is from "Little" and Susannah. This establishes who we are--the ones having the family Reunion. continued in Part 2 _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Dear Coates List, Thanks to Charlotte, Suzy, Linda and Joe for their messages on this one, I too would be careful to check if the author of a document was sloppy at crossing t's. I am very lucky to have my early research concentrated in very small communities and therefore would be aware of any similar looking names. One forgets how much more difficult this is in a larger more diverse community. Thanks also to a. howard for leads on Coates of Trumbull County. It seems several of my ancestors left home at various times and went to the U.S.A, whereas your Coates ancestors did it the other way around. BTW Charlotte, Selby is where I live, Caroline is my name>>g Regards CFH Selby, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom Researching: COATES and CHAPMAN of Palmyra, Wayne County, New York State. 1848 to present.
