Well, I ordered some microfilm for PA Wills.... Also found at my local FHC, the index to PA Wills and it included the Cs...so I took a look at that for more info...I'll post it as soon as I'm able to get it organized... Also they had Will book W and Y, there so I got those...they also had Book 14 and 15...but didn't look at those yet....I ordered the film starting with the earliest records and I'll work down from there...James was in 1705 I think and then there was a Samuel in 17something....Will Books A-B and Will Books I, K...I don't think there is a Will book J available, not sure where I'll get those...but I did find some abstracts that might cover will book J...and of course there are Coats in Will Book J... I'll post the info I found in Books W and Y and then scan the records and put them in the archive...the only full Coats will I found was for Martha Coats, wife of William Coats...the others are witnesses and executers to other peoples wills... Any connections here? ----- Original Message ----- From: Lori Ann Williams Sent: Monday, March 19, 2001 10:59 AM To: * Charlotte Subject: RE: Kinzy Coats Here's a transcription of the article I told you about. There is a picture of John and Caroline included but it scans horribly. John and Caroline Whitley Coats (Reflections of McNairy County, Tennessee, p. 329) Obed Coats was born in 1826 in Rutherford Co., North Carolina. The family moved to McNairy County Tennessee about 1830 and settled in the second Civil District. The 1840 McNairy County Census lists Obed Coats as the fourteen year old son of Obediah Coats. The 1880 Census lists Obed as fifty-four years old and the father of twenty-six year old John Kinzy and one daughter, Mary Jane. John Kinzy Coats was my grandfather. He married Caroline Whitley on January 6, 1881. They were married by Justice of the Peace P. A. Brown in the 2nd Civil District and remained in this area until death. John Kinzy and Caroline had twelve children with six of them surviving past infancy. The six were: Seth, Obed, Nancy Ann, Ollie, David Kinzy and Rebecca Ellen. Nancy Ann married Ivy Barton and had four children. Seth married Lucinda Kizer and had eight children. Obed was married to Virginia McIntire and to Mamie Cobb and had seven children. Ollie married J. B. Boens and E. H. Smith. No records were found of Ollie's life except birthdate and marriage dates. Rebecca Ellen and David Kinzy never married and died in young adulthood. They are buried in a family cemetery on the boundary line of the Coats family farm and the John T. Moore farm near Moore's Schoolhouse Church. John Kinzy died about 1935 and Caroline died in 1937. They are buried in unmarked graves at Moore's Schoolhouse Cemetery. Grandchildren of Joh and Caroline that remain in McNairy Co. are: David Coats, Linda Coats Dubois, and Verna Coats Sipes. Great-grandchildren of John and Caroline that live in Mcnairy County are: Faye Coats Clayton, Donald Coats, Raymond Coats, Ronnie Coats, Lisa Coats Cotner, Laura Coats Faulkner, Brenda Coats Horton, Annie Rea King, Nelleta Moore, Joe Don Moore, John Milton Moore, Terry Moore, Patricia Coats McElhenney, Sherrill Coats Plunk, Rebecca Coats Redmon, Ina Coats Roberts, Steve Roberson, John Roberson, Timothy Roberson, Josie Roberson, Jeffrey Teague, Jeremy Teague, Sandra Wilson. ----- Original Message ----- From: Lori Ann Williams Sent: Monday, March 19, 2001 7:32 AM To: * Charlotte Subject: RE: Kinzy Coats Thanks for the quick reply. John Kinzy Whitley (there is also a John Kinzy Coats, my JK's cousin) was born in McNairy Co., TN in 1850. Mary Elizabeth Coats, JK's mother, was born in 1828 in either NC, Indiana, or TN (conflicting census data). Her father was Obediah Coats b. about 1808 and she had brothers, Obed, David and Joshua. I have an article from McNairy Co., TN that discusses the lineage of Obediah's family. Obed (the brother) and Mary are living next door to each other on the 1850 McNairy Co. census. Mary and John Whitley later moved the family to Illinois, but the majority of my Coats information has came out of Tennessee. FYI...not sure this made it to the list...Char ----- Original Message ----- From: Karen Lewis Sent: Saturday, March 10, 2001 6:21 AM To: Charlotte Subject: Lewis/Coates in S.C. The information I now have on James Lewis who married Sarah Coates is: James born in Georgetown District, present day Marion County, SC December 10, 1781. Marrried Sarah Coates June 22, 1809. Around 1811 James moved his family to Darlington County, SC, where his older brother Benjamin was living. Around 1821 James moved his family south - probably to Florida first following his older brothers Benjamin & William), then ended up in Tuscaloosa County, AL where he remained until his death in 1842. He had the following children with Sarah: Mary Ann born February 25, 1811 Minerva born October 15, 1812 James Lewis, Jr. born November 16, 1814 Andrew Jackson Lewis born November 16, 1816 Sion Coates Lewis born December 6, 1818 Thomas Lewis born May 17, 1821 Sara Lewis boirn January 19, 1824 Sarah died about 1825 in Alabama. (If my sources are correct.) James's parents were Benjamin Lewis & Sarah Green. Benjamin was born about 1752 in New Hanover County, NC an dmoved to Bladen County, NC early in life. Hi Sue, I'm not sure what the "Coates & Clark Thread Comp. is, but our family, related back to Moses Coates and Mary Knight Vickers, has Clarks running through it on my Grandmother's side. Starts with Thomas Clark (d. 1708, and runs through Thomas, John, Benjamin, William and Edward on the male line. Albie Davis Thomaston, Maine
Does anyone on this list have any info on the *COATES & CLARK THREAD COMP. How does *COATES fit into the COATES genealogy; if indeed he was a descendant of Moses & Susanna COATES who settled in PA in 1717? Sue12632@aol.com
