    1. [COATES-L] Looking for Marriage of John (W.) Coats and Christine McRae
    2. ed &cathleen barker
    3. Hello Coates List, My 2nd Great Grandfather was John (W possibly Wallace) Coats was the son of William Washington Coats and 2nd wife Matilda B. Wallace of Sumter County Alabama. John Coats married Christine McRae sometime between June 6, 1860 and October 24, 1860. Christine McRae is the daughter of Alexander Hamilton McRae and Mary Ann Canty Clark of Livingston County Louisiana. Would any of you have marriages for Coats in Louisiana or Alabama have a marriage listed for these two folks? Would appreciate any assistance you might be able to provide. William Washington Coats b.1810 - d. aft. 1880 Dallas Texas (married Dec 10, 1836 Sumter Ala) and Wife Matilda B. Wallace b. 1820 Alabama d. aft 1853 Sumter, Alabama John Coats born abt 1838 and died April 2, 1862 in Livingston Parish, Louisiana Christine McRae born May 12, 1842 in Livingston Parish, Louisiana and died February 8, 1924, Morehouse Parish, Louisiana They had one son John Bussey Coats born January 9, 1862. John Coats was listed in Sumter County Ala Census June 8, 1860 and listed again in October 1860 with his wife Christine McRae in Livingston Parish, Louisiana - Census had the name spelled "Cots." Am trying to locate marriage record/bond for John & Christine. Not sure if they married in LA or Alabama. Christine's sister Mary Jane McRae married Horatio Wallace - figure there must be a connection with the Wallace's somehow. MaryJane married in East Baton Rouge, LA. Also trying to locate gravesite of John Coats, letter from John Coats' father indicates that John & Christine were living in Greenwill Springs, LA. Christine's husband John Coats and her father Alexander Hamilton McRae both died in 1862 - assume they are buried in same cemetery. Any clues are appreciated. Cathleen Coats Barker

His estate record (which I have not seen) is dated 1849 and names the following heirs: Livingston Co, MO Probate Court index. Probate Box 652 William Coats No Will Died 1849, Jas. Coats. Adm. Heirs: James Coats Jesse Coats Thomas Coats Purmett Coats Zachariah Coats George W. Coats Delphia Coats Elizabeth Coats Mary Coats Sara Cutschfield [Crutchfield] I have information about Jesse Coats, Thomas Coats, Zachariah Coats, George W. Coats, Elizabeth Coats and Sara Cutschfield [Crutchfield], but not on the others. On census records, George W. Coats states that his Father was born in KENTUCKY and his Mother in VIRGINIA. Judging by the birthdates and birthplaces found in census records of his children,William Coats was in TN in 1813-abt 1816, and possibly through 1822. He was in MO by 1827. Any clues??? Julie

    3. Hi My name is Edna Coates Schlauch and I am new to this list. I do hope someone can help me. I am looking for info on my grandparents. What I have isn't much. I am looking for Robert ? Coates. he married Edith Howe.Robert died late 1954.Edith died early 1955.Edith admitted to being 54 before she died. That would mean she was 14 when my father, also Robert, was born. so she may have fibbed a little. I have no idea where they were born or married.I was told one or both was Welsh. Whether they came from Wales or their parents did, I do not know. They both died in and around Wilkes Barre Pa. they lived in Kingston,Pa when my father was in 4th grade. Unfortunately I can find no records since the county lost most of them in a flood. Can someone tell me where else to look? Does anyone have anything on this line? They also had a daughter named Edna.born 1917. thank you for reading this and for any help you can give.

    1. [COATES-L] SC Archive
    2. * Charlotte
    3. Well, I think the SC Archive has finally hit critical mass....LOL I just got four rolls of microfilm...ordered them via the net i.e. emailed an order!!!! step in the right direction... However, they have for some reason decided their microfilm indexes are for internal use only...so they don't supply you with an index of their microfilm any longer... So, I ordered, and this is exactly how it went down.... James: Barnwell County....there are 19 microfilm do you want them...(I had spoken with him earlier via the phone) My response: (this was all via email) I want the first two rolls of microfilm of Barnwell County conveyances and the first two rolls of film for the Orangeburg Co. Plats...(I understood all this)...Rosemary has all my info... I got today in the mail...Barnwell Co Conveyance Book 1 and 2, so far so good...but then I got Barnwell Co District Plats and Barnwell County Deeds...I'll look them over tomorrow...but I think conveyances and deeds are the same thing...and the deeds look like deed book 1...I don't know....but Barnwell Plats and Orangeburg Co. Plats sounds a bit different to me... LOL...yep, they've hit critical mass....the day I called back there, they couldn't find their microfilm book, so I was told to email him...which I did, using i.e. cutting and pasting the info from their web site as to which microfilm I was interested in etc.... SC was so efficient and fast...don't know what happened or is happening back there...but I'm not getting good feelings about this...I hate to complain all the time but at the prices they charge I'd kinda like to have what I wanted... I've also ordered the two first microfilm of the Jefferson County GA deeds...don't know what I'll get with that...but this is getting to one great big surprise after another...<g>...that's from the GA State archive.... She built "Cedar Grove," a beautiful home which can still be seen and visited in Fairmount Park in Phila. Her husband's parents were Thomas and Margaret (Jenkins) Paschall. There is more information in Jordan's "Colonial Families," 1911, vol I, p. 653. The Samuel Coates mentioned as executor was Elizabeth Coates Paschall's nephew (8/24/1748 - 6/5/1830). 3. Os...thank you so much for this...Samuel and James I believe were first cousins to Marmaduke Coate...prior message....Char ----- Original Message ----- From: osborn cresson Sent: Sunday, March 25, 2001 5:57 PM To: coats@hotmail.com Subject: Warwick Coats (b. 11/3/1715) This is from the Historical Society of PA file "Coates Families of PA" in the Bertha McGeehan Collection of the Coates Family Notes (call #FC Co). The file contained a lot of names and dates of this family but almost no sources for the information. Warwick Coats (b. 11/3/1715) was a shipwright of Moyamensing, PA who married Sarah Kelly on 5/11/1777. Their son was Warwick Coats, Jr. who married Mary Plumsted (daughter of Thomas P.) The parents of Warwick, Sr. were John Coats (1684-3/16/1760), a brickmaker, and Mary Hule who married c. 1713. The mother of this John Coats was Joan Sisum Coats. Her children were John, Mary, William, Thomas, and George (not necessarily in that order). They came from Gloucester or Lincolnshire, England as agents of their maternal uncle, Thomas Sisom (the spelling varies). 1. [COATES-L] Fw: Coates/Coats/Coate families in 18th century Philadelphia
    2. * Charlotte
    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: osborn cresson Sent: Sunday, March 25, 2001 5:55 PM To: coats@hotmail.com Subject: Coates/Coats/Coate families in 18th century Philadelphia I had a free couple of hours on Saturday and went to the library of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and looked up Coates in their card catalogue. There are many files listed under "Coates Family Notes" but you can only order three at a time and you can not do your own photocopying so that becomes very slow and expensive. One of the files had a few typed pages, without references, that listed the different Coates/Coats/Coate families in early Philadelphia ("Coates Family of Chester, Montgomery, and Philadelphia Counties," from the Haber G. Gearhart Collection, call # FC Co). Here they are: (1) Coates Family of Coatesville: descended from Moses Coates (b. c. 1690) m. Susanna. (2) Coates Family of Philadelphia: descended from Thomas Coates (1659-1719) m. Beulah Jacques (1659-1741). (3) Coates Family of Montgomery County: descended from Lindsay Coates (1743-1798) m.1 Ruth Hughes, m.2 Rachel Holstein. (4) Coats Family of New Jersey: descended from Joan Sisom Coats (b. c. 1661), mother of William, Thomas, John, and George Coats. (5) Coates Family: descended from John Coates (b. c. 1725), father of Septimus Coates who m. Mary Holstein. (6) Coats Family: descended from John Coats (b. c. 1740). (7) Coates Family: descended from Dr. John Coates (1751-1810) m. Susanna Murray. One other family was mentioned in another file: (8) Coate family of NJ: descended from John and Elizabeth Coate of Kingsbury Monthly Meeting (Quaker), Somersetshire, England, parents of John, Samuel, Henry, and James. They came to Burlington County, NJ in 1715. They were cousins or nephews of Marmaduke Coate who died in Burlington in 1728/29. Samuel, mentioned above, married Mary in 1723 and they had John, Henry, William, Marmaduke, Samuel Jr., and Elizabeth. Henry went to New Garden Monthly Meeting in NC and William is said to have gone south, too. Further details is in the file, "Coates Families of England, Burlington County, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania," from the Enders Collection in the Coates Family Notes (call #FC Co). Very few additional details were given in the file from the Gearhart Collection that listed seven of the eight families, above. Apparently the unnamed author had found no evidence of relationships between the seven families. All I can add is that according to the records I have seen, the family of Thomas and Beulah Coates, (2), of Sproxton England, is not related to any of the other families. It would help to hear from representatives of the other lines. Charlotte had asked about Warwick Coats, so I took some notes on him and will put them in a separate message. He was a member of the Coats family of NJ, (4). Unfortunately, I rarely have time for this sort of research. When I can get away to a library my time should go to ongoing projects on the Berry, Ramsay, Osborne, Wetherill, and Guier families. One Coates project I have helped a bit with a study of the Philadelphia abolitionist, Benjamin Coates (1808-1887). A book on him is due to be published later this year. Good luck to any of you interested in straightening out the 18th century Philadelphia Coates genealogies.
