Hi Listers, New subscriber so thought I would state main interest on Coates. Looking for any details on Thomas Coates {my 3xg grandfather} who was born circa 1774, I believe in the Avening or Chedworth areas of Gloucestershire but could be way off mark of course....He married a Maria. Their son George {my 2xg grandfather}, was born ca1815 and married a Hannah Hobbs on 24th July 1837 in Avening, their son Job(e) moved to Ullenwood & Cobberley areas of Gloucestershire in the late 1850s. Any info whatsoever would be much appreciated. Many tks... Dave Coates in a very sunny part of the UK [Cheltenham in fact]
I also got some more PA Wills film in...so I'm headed for the library today... Char

Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Joe, I'm wondering if this might be connected to your Harwill (Harwell) Coates...this is Burks County GA... The name btw is spelled Coats and Coates in these records... I found a deed specifically naming William Coats as the son of Charles Coats Found also was a receipt of William Coats acting on letters of attorney from his sisters, Sarah and Mary Coates and brother Thomas Coates...they are refered to as William's brother and sisters in this record... Not sure this would be the same William Coats as mentioned in the Tax records with Charles Coats I believe it was 1792 or 1797.... Also found two deeds: William Coats selling, Charles Coats' land, his father's land...states Charles is his father in this deed...it appears that a Shadrack Vining was the administrator of Charles' estate... There is also a deed showing that William Coats is purchasing land from his father's estate....all these were recorded in 1805... Recall the Court Records for Jefferson County GA names William Coats as the guardian for some of the children of Charles Coats...I don't recall the specific names in that record, it is in the archive, but I do recall one of them was Thomas but it seems there was also another, which started with a B but the full name was not clear... Also found a Nicholas Baker deed...might be more on the Coats/Baker connection... I've been re-evaluating Henry Coate and Mary "Molly" Pitts and have come to wonder whether or not that Henry was the one who owned the 350 acres on Goosepond.. I say this because there is an incongruity between his age and the birth of his children in the census records verses when the land was bought in 1771.... He would have had 5 members of his household in 1771... and he would not match the Henry who was between 26 and 45 years of age in the 1800 census. He also didn't have any children till 1784, years after he bought the land.... so I'm don't think that the Henry on Goosepond is the Henry who married Molly Pitts.... Does anyone have any idea who the Henry of 1771 is? Maybe he's Henry's father, named Henry also from Hunterdon Co., NJ????????????? LINDA COATE DUDICK, P.O. Please forward this to Nick. The proof is in the fact that he was the Marmaduke who moved from Newberry, SC. There is only evidence of ONE Marmaduke in Newberry, SC. He was the Quaker and is written up in many histories. His parentage has been in confusion till recently, but not the fact that he helped provide supplies in the Revolutionary War. I have a very large write up for him on my page at www.ancestrees.com. Do you know where his grave is. I visited the cemetery where he was supposedly buried. An old-timer said he though his grave was under a large tree at the farthest point in from the entry way, even though his stone has been missing for almost as long as the man could remember. Please write and tell me more details on what proof they need. That's never been in controversy.
