We've had 2 DNA kits returned recently. It takes about 7 weeks to get the results. Thank you, new members! Linda Coate

That DNA test was my dad's. Just quickly looking at the data, I don't think they're the same Henry. His name was spelled Coate and (working from memory) he died in Newberry Co., SC late 1700's. He left a second wife, Hannah (and I've found proof of that now!) who was still in Newberry in 1820. She left with some of her sons to Coweta Co., GA, probably due to the land lotteries going on at the time. they show up around 1830 in Coweta Co. Coweta's in the north to mid-western part of the state, while I think Wilkes is in the south. I doubt they strayed that far. There was a good bit of info on the DNA page and the old archives had lots of legal documents about "my" Henry. Anybody figured out all those Newberry Henry's yet? :) - Janet
I am not certain that the Henry Coats who married Mary Pitts is connected to the N GA group. But I was delighted to receive the DNA chart and plan to keep it in my files for reference. Perhaps I can find some of the NGA Coates descendants on rootsweb or ancestry and see if there is a chance they would be involved in the DNA testing. It is very interesting that I cannot get any James Brooks descendants to do DNA testing - even though I have offered to foot the entire bill for any and all of them. Such is life! If I could - I would rob a grave and do DNA testing! We do have a DNA kit in the Marmaduke Group that is from Henry Coats and Mary Pitts but we don't have a Georgia Coats DNA grouping test yet that I can remember to see if they are related. Well, I do believe there is more about this Coats families we don't know than we do know....:) I also think there is another Wilson Coats, older in Kershaw/Camden area that we know nothing about either...seems he had a rather large piece of land, which means he probably had a family when he moved there...but I've not found anything other than a survey for him... Char, These are giving us some really early Coates in this country that I haven't seen before. Thanks. Char, Sorry I didn't get back with you sooner. I've been swamped and am just getting to my email. Which kit number are you referring to here that needs Ann Dunnigan listed as the wife. I agree that the wives often help keep them sorted in our minds. Thanks. Linda P.S. I have a full day again today but hope to devote time to this tomorrow again. :) Linda Coats Family History wrote: > Linda...you need to put John Coats wife Ann Dunnigan under our DNA > project...usually the wives are the only way to sort these things > out....please don't substitute what you believe to be the lines for > what we may put in there...tracing the wives has been very productive > in tracing some of these lines.... > > I'm not sure where you're getting the Kansas connection either for > that Thomas James.... > > Could you please explain that as well.... > > Char > >
Has anyone found DNA links ... or ... documentation for the Coates families in early Wilkes County, GA? Henry, Nathaniel, William, Lesley, James, John, Jane Smiley Coates, Henrietta Coates Bankston, or Zachariah? -- The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Forde 25487 Old Howth Road Hempstead, Texas 77445
I have been through all the land records Curt, for MD and have found no records where any of that land was sold by Charles or his kids other than those deeds I've posted before...my guess is that since we don't know who all his daughters were or who any of them were for that matter that, some may have stayed in MD.... In 1881 or 1887 there is a Henry Coats there involved in land as the trustee of an Episcopal Church in Charles County MD, I've not checked but he might be related to the other group out of Charles County MD as well... There is also in 1777 there is deed in Montgomery County MD between a John Watson and a Samuel Coats of Philladelphia and John Reynell, both of Philadelphia I believe...John Watson's wife's name is Sarah...another deed for this same Samuel Coats dated 1791 to a John Mitchell....without more digging in MD, I don't know if this Samuel might be related or not to the rest of the group...but there doesn't seem at first glance to be any indication in the land records if there is any relationship...but this would all be about the time that the rest of Charles' kids went to South Carolina... and in 1893 there is a deed of a Moses Coats in Charles County MD... -- A shameless plug for my web activities: Support Authentic Cherokee Art - ask for the Artist's Tribal registration number before you buy!! I've also been told that there are Coats who are members of the Ogalala Sioux in SD....I've encouraged them to get into the DNA project but we'll have to see what happens... -- A shameless plug for my web activities: Support Authentic Cherokee Art - ask for the Artist's Tribal registration number before you buy!! Linda...you need to put John Coats wife Ann Dunnigan under our DNA project...usually the wives are the only way to sort these things out....please don't substitute what you believe to be the lines for what we may put in there...tracing the wives has been very productive in tracing some of these lines.... I'm not sure where you're getting the Kansas connection either for that Thomas James.... Could you please explain that as well.... Our new Coats DNA page is coming along thanks to everyone's help. This letter is intended to answer some of the questions I've had. 1. You are welcome to submit a short or lengthy report on your Coate/s line including sources to be linked to your kit number on our page at html://www.ancestrees.com/dna/family.html. Some members have submitted one pagers and others have submitted descendants charts from their oldest verified ancestor with all of that ancestors known descendants generated by their genealogy programs. Either is fine. It is preferable that they are not in pdf format. If you have a choice, an .rtf (Rich Text Format) or just the data directly in your email transfers best. 2. This is free. I've already paid for the site and so there is no extra cost to you. 3. Your information or email contact helps others who think they might be related to share their information with you and visa versa. 4. If you'd like to submit information, your website or an email address to be linked, please just email me. You are always welcome to update your information or ask questions also. Have a lovely weekend. On behalf of all of us, thanks. Linda Coate
Does anyone know how this Jonathan J. Coates ties into a Coates family? Clemency for John J. Coats Added by pagan420prince <http://www.ancestry.com/community/member/profile.aspx?cba=pagan420prince> on 6 Apr 2007 South Carolina Marion District We the undersigned citizens of Marion District, understanding that John Coats of Co _ 23 Regt SCV is under sentence of death for desertion confined in prison in Petersburg, Va, with a view to mitigate the death penalty and of recommending the said John Coats to executive clemency, state, that we have long known the said John Coats, and cheerfully bear testimony to his good character __He is an honest, and poor man, with a wife and four or five little children extremely poor dependent on the said Coats__Coats is at the same time a very ignorant uninformed man, we are satisfied that his desertion or rather his absenteeism from the army (for we can not think that though he may be technically guilty of desertion, his crisis cant be classed with those deserters who obstenately persist in refusing to fight) was caused by an ardent desire to see his family__We do not think that he is one that would desert or betray his country__This much is to be said of Coats that in the beginnig of this war he volunteered in the company to which he now belongs__ The undersigned, think this case of Coats is over well deserving of executive clemency so we recommend him G.
