I have also been studying another pattern in your DNA group - not related within 8 generations, but still absolutely related a little further back. That's the kit that goes back to Irving Coates, b. 1830. That researcher might like to know that according to 2nd hand genealogies at www.ancestry.com whose sources I'm currently checking, Irving was the son of Josiah, b. 1799, MA. Josiah was the supposed son of Reuben, b. 1750, MA. Reuben was the son of Charles and Thankful Tute Tate. Just more food for thought. Does anyone have a Coats family that had a John born in 1783 and a James in 1785? Linda Coate John Coats wrote: > Linda Coate wrote: > > >> O.K. guys. And one last point... Anyone that wishes to have research done in this New England area, should contact the New England Geological and Historical Society, they document their research and make no assumptions, I found their research to be very good as far as it went...although they maintained that if the family had slaves in the SC area they were not Quaker, which I don't think is the case...it wasn't until much later in time that the slavery issue became prominent in Quaker Society.... You will need to specify what you have and what you suspect, I only researched the name Charles Coats in that Frederick/Montgomery area since that was all the info we had at the time...that did not include the other William Coats in the area...so I'm still not exactly sure who that William is or where he went...he seems to have left the area or at least there are no other records there other than those early references to him...which I felt was too early of a time period to be William Coats wife Francis in SC and which based on the ages of Notley and James in that old tax record, would not be a son and was more likely a brother...although that likewise could be wrong...we just don't know...there is also another Charles Coats in that Maine area early on and more Coats in that New Hampshire area, we don't know anything about...not to mention those in New York... So just a suggestion if you want good research...not to mention the NEGHS will publish their work if it's information not in their registry....I don't think they'll do a lot of deep digging but at least surface clues can give rise to deeper research....:) Char On Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 2:39 PM, Coats Family History <coats.genealogy@gmail.com> wrote: > oooops...my mistake, let's see, this latest test seems to show that > the John Coats married to Ann Dunnigan (James Green Coats and William > Washington Coats) has a closer relationship to William Coats married > Francis than to James Robert Coats m Elizabeth Webster.... > > On Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 2:35 PM, Coats Family History > <coats.genealogy@gmail.com> wrote: >> James appears from this latest test to be more closely related to >> William than John R.... >> >> The secondary info at Ancestry has not been confirmed with any primary >> source records from the New England area records....New England by the >> way has very good records, so there is no need to rely on secondary >> info at Ancestry...so that connection with Charles Coats and Thankful, >> I was not able to find any records to make any connection there...that >> does not mean something may not show up..but at this time we have no >> records showing any connection...and unless Ancestry provides source >> info it's probably not reliable... >> >> Very little research has been done in that New England area by the way >> on any Coats families, that includes New York and the Maine, New >> Hampshire areas as well...so other than the documentation found at the >> New England Genealogical and Historical Society, together with the >> early town records are the only ones we have... >> >> So needless to say, much more research needs to be done in those >> areas, which may give us more clues on how these families might be >> connected... >> >> Char >> >> >> >> On Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 2:18 PM, Coats Family History >> <coats.genealogy@gmail.com> wrote: >>> There is likewise nothing in the DNA reports that indicate that John >>> Coats m Ann Dunnigan and James Roberts Coats are brothers or 1st >>> cousins, they are merely related at this point, so please don't make >>> any indication of that either! >>> >>> You need to be careful making your assumptions with this group...they >>> can be misleading and prevent others from doing further research... >>> >>> All we know is: they are related however, we don't know how at this point... >>> >>> Char >>> >>> On Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 1:23 PM, Linda Coate <lcoate@ancestrees.com> wrote: >>>> I have the new DNA results up. James appears from this latest test to be more closely related to William than John R.... The secondary info at Ancestry has not been confirmed with any primary source records from the New England area records....New England by the way has very good records, so there is no need to rely on secondary info at Ancestry...so that connection with Charles Coats and Thankful, I was not able to find any records to make any connection there...that does not mean something may not show up..but at this time we have no records showing any connection...and unless Ancestry provides source info it's probably not reliable... Very little research has been done in that New England area by the way on any Coats families, that includes New York and the Maine, New Hampshire areas as well...so other than the documentation found at the New England Genealogical and Historical Society, together with the early town records are the only ones we have... So needless to say, much more research needs to be done in those areas, which may give us more clues on how these families might be connected... We have new DNA results in that increase kit# 13696. It verifies a 99% likelyhood of common ancestry within 8 generations to several members of the John/William/James group towards the bottom of our Coats DNA page. I'll get that updated points up this week. This is a kit that descends from Maj. John Coats and Ann Dunnigan. Have fun figuring out the connections. Linda Coate, co-admin
Does anyone know of a Coats branch living in Middlesex Co, CT in the later part of the 1700's? It would help one of our Coats DNA researchers to possibly connect into the other Connecticut/Massachusetts Coats. Thanks. Linda Coate
