    3. You know, this is most interesting....almost the same scenario as the Coats!! SC to TN to GA to AL but no documentation in SC or TN!! ----Original Message Follows---- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Elisha Coats Gore Date: Fri, 28 May 2004 11:02:22 EDT Char: You are most welcome. I sure wish someone out there had information on my John Gore, b. 1805 S.C. I have searched, researched, got help from other Gore descendants and nothing shows up. Most of the Gores in S.C. have been accounted for and there is little more I can do. John shows up for the first time in 1826 Bibb County, AL when he married Sarah Whatley. I can trace him as far as 1850 in Claiborne Parish, LA. He died between 1850 and 1860 (somewhere between La & Tx). His widow Sarah Whatley Gore shows up on the 1860 Henderson Co., TX census with her unmarried children, among which is my great grandfather John Henry Gore. As far as I know he went from S.C. to AL; however, it is possible he did stop off in GA. There are a number of Gores in GA between 1805 and 1826 but most of them have been accounted for too. I will continue looking for the name Coats (Coates) and if I find anything on your William Coats or the Baker family that I believe might be of interest, I will let you know. 3. I'll bet that extra James Coats in Chester County SC, not named as a son of Notley was his brother?? and the Charles in MD being much older would not be the Charles in SC, could be another son, Notley, James and Charles as brothers?? or Charles could be another cousin?? But I'd say for sure we know that James and Notley are brothers and came to SC from MD...most interesting.... Isn't this interesting...but still doesn't show if or how William Coats of Kings Creek might be related to these...?? She has sent me some information that another Gore researcher, now deceased, had sent her. >From what I have gathered from this information, there doesn't seem to be a connection other than possible neighbors. The one thing I wondered about was the fact there was a Notley Coats and a Notley Gore. This may be just a coincidence and the name was used much in the early years. Bonnie Frey, now deceased, descended from Notley Gore b. 1754 MD. It has not been determined who his father was, although there has been a lot of speculation. The fact that her line was Notley Gore she did a lot of research in Maryland and S.C.on any one with that first name. She came up with the following information sent to Eddie Josey-Wilson, who was kind enough to share this information with me. >From Bonnie: "I've found two in Frederick Co., MD. One was Notley COARTS. His family appeared in the 1776 Frederick Co., MD census, Sugar Land Hundred. His dad (or grandad) was Charles COARTS, age 62 b. abt. 1714. Living with Charles COARTS was JAMES COARTS, age 23, b. abt. 1753 and Notley COARTS, age 21 b. ab. 1755. The other one was Notley Thomas in the Frederick Co., MD court records 1749.------Later (1786-1794) we have a Notley COATS in Chester Co., SC records. Same man as the age 21 Notley COARTS in the 1776 MD census. The spelling differs - COARTS vs COATS). I have been unable to learn whether there was any connection of any kind between the COATS family of Frederick Co., MD & Chester Co., SC and our Gores. A Charles Coats served jury duty in Frederick Co., MD in 1750/51 & 1753. He is listed in 1776 census as Charles Coarts and was age 61 (b.1714)Listed in the household was James 23, Notley age 21." End Quote Now to tell you more about Elisha Gore of Chester Co., SC. who, along with James Gore, witnessed the will of William Coats dated 15 June 1783. Elisha Gore was the son of James Manning Gore, Elisha Gore was born ca. 1756 and died in 1808 Jefferson Co., GA. James Manning Gore (1735-1818) was born in Prince George's Co., MD., son of James Gore 11(1707-1785). Elisha Gore was deceased when his father James Manning Gore died in 1818 and named the two sons of Elisha, Geroge W. Gore and Isom Gore, as heirs in behalf of their father. Elisha got into trouble in Chester Co., S.C. and escaped to GA. where he died. He is mentioned in a lot of Chester Co., SC Court minutes 1785-1799 by Brent H. Holcomb and Elmer O. Parker. There were a number of Gores from S.C. who went to TN and lived in Bedford Co., TN and Lincoln Co. TN and other parts of TN. You mentioned Coats in Smith Co., TN. I have a deed book which lists a number of Coats that I will be happy to look up for you. I also have most of the Edgefield Co., SC books in case you do not have them. It does not appear that the information given you that there was an Elisha Coats who married James Gore was the right information. 3. Well, I do believe this Elisha Gore is the Elisha Gore that witnessed Notley Coats' will and I also think this Charles Coats in Jefferson County GA is the same as the Charles Coats in Newberry County SC... In other words this information below would seem to at least lend support that Elisha Gore in SC was male not female....:) Char ----Original Message Follows---- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Elisha Coats Gore Date: Wed, 26 May 2004 17:20:48 EDT Hi: In reachering my Gore line on Google.com I came across a manuscript on the William Coats line. One article caught my attention. There was a note that read "Elisha Coats, a sister, born ca. 1739 in S.C. married James Gore. There is no documentation to support this to date." You go on to state, "Elisha Gore and James Gore witnessed Notley's (Coats?) will and based on that I believe Neva assumed a sister here." Have you information now that indicates there was an Elisha Coats who married James Gore or is it possible the information Nena showed to be untrue? There was an Elisha Gore, son of James Manning Gore, who died in Jefferson Co., GA in 1808. He moved to GA about 1795 and is listed on tax lists in Jefferson Co., GA. Any information you might have regarding the Elisha Coats who married a James Gore would be appreciated. This is the info I have tho: John Peter Coates m. Emily Jane Buckingham at Buckinghamshire, England circa 1614-Marmaduke b. 1616 Marmaduke Coates m. Edith Satterthwait in Summersetshire, England 9/8/1634-John b. 1644 John Coate m.Elizabeth Humphrey in England circa 1665 - Samuel b 11/10/1670 Samuel Coate m. Mary Saunders at Falls Meeting, Bucks Co. PA 1/16/1695-Henry b. circa 1700 in N.J Henry Coate(s) m.Esther Willson 1731 Burlington, Hunterdon Co, N. J.-Marmaduke b. 6/13/1738 in NJ. Marmaduke Coate m. Mary Jane Coppock Bush River S.C. circa 1763-Esther b.3/17/1767 Guilford City, new Garden MM N.C. Esther Coate m. Isaiah Pemberton at Bush River SC 9/27/1780-Mary b ??( I suspect before the family moved to Ohio) Mary Pemberton m.Abner Barrett 12/23/1810 in Miami Co. Ohio-Esther b. 9/25/1811 Miami Co Ohio Esther Barrett m. John Harmason (Harmison? b. England) 9/26/1828 Miami Co Ohio- Roseanna b 6/10/1835 in LaPorte IN Roseanna Harmison m Charley Reish in Indiana 12/6/1857- Lillie May Reish b. 2/17/1865. Lillie is my Great Grandmother. I've read in several places on the web that there is a 3rd Marmaduke but I'm not sure about that. I do have death dates and locations if you are interested. Hard to figure since all the Coates, Coats, Coate named their offspring the sames names and married people with the same names but I guess that happens in a close knit church. I had no idea my ancestors were Quakers until I started my family search a year ago. I'm probably boring you but I do appreciate your prompt reply even if we aren't "cousins". I am on a project of taking photos in Canyon County cemeteries. While in the Canyon Hill Cemetery in Caldwell I took a photo of the headstone for Romanzo and Lephe Coats. While cropping and tweaking the photo to look nice I decide to try and find family of the people on the headstone and was lucky enough to find your research on the internet. Half the fun is finding family to send the image to. I have even started a website for the photos on the internet at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~holton/cempics/headstones.htm I don't have Romanzo and Lephe's names posted yet as I am going through a batch of photos at this moment and when I get a bunch together I update the site. You can go to the website first and see that this is an actual project. It could be that you might have more relatives in this area and you might want to check back once in a while. There is a seach engine provided for the site so you can search all the names that I have. Thanks for your time. 3. That's my Huff Coats, his son William and son James E. Coats, James is my great grandfather... A word of caution on these Cherokee census records...Huff I think was listed as Cherokee, when in fact he is white...but he was Cherokee by intermarriage, which means, when he was listed on the Cherokee census he was listed as Cherokee...Louisa his wife was actually the Cherokee... I also think the John H. Coats is Huff brother as well...but I don't know of any, if any, family for him...
