I sure wish someone out there had information on my John Gore, b. 1805 S.C. I have searched, researched, got help from other Gore descendants and nothing shows up. Most of the Gores in S.C. have been accounted for and there is little more I can do. John shows up for the first time in 1826 Bibb County, AL when he married Sarah Whatley. I can trace him as far as 1850 in Claiborne Parish, LA. He died between 1850 and 1860 (somewhere between La & Tx). His widow Sarah Whatley Gore shows up on the 1860 Henderson Co., TX census with her unmarried children, among which is my great grandfather John Henry Gore. As far as I know he went from S.C. to AL; however, it is possible he did stop off in GA. There are a number of Gores in GA between 1805 and 1826 but most of them have been accounted for too. I will continue looking for the name Coats (Coates) and if I find anything on your William Coats or the Baker family that I believe might be of interest, I will let you know. I'll bet that extra James Coats in Chester County SC, not named as a son of Notley was his brother?? and the Charles in MD being much older would not be the Charles in SC, could be another son, Notley, James and Charles as brothers?? or Charles could be another cousin?? Well, I do believe this Elisha Gore is the Elisha Gore that witnessed Notley Coats' will and I also think this Charles Coats in Jefferson County GA is the same as the Charles Coats in Newberry County SC... Limited Date: Mon, 24 May 2004 23:22:22 -0400 I have the book " Coates Brothers-A History 1877-1977" published by Westerham Press in 1977 detailing the history of Coates Printing Ink Company and its founders etc. ( Coates ASI).The Family Tree showing those connected with the business is as follows: Henry Coates m Anne Allan of Clapham- 1777-1862 Henry Coates,II m.Caroline Roberts- 1818-1888 Henry Coates,III m Fanny Ogilvy 1852-1905. Only child was Dr. Henry.J. Coates 1880-1963. John William Coates m Edith Wright(1) and Lydia Glendenning(2) 1853-1925. Children of (1) were Cedric Coates, b. 1889 plus 2 daughters. Children of (2) were 4 sons and 2 daughters plus Raymond Coates m Muriel Simpson; they had a son named Peter Coates b.1942 William Coates m Lucy Scott 1856-1922. Their children were Helen Coates and Anselm( W.A. Coates). George Coates m Nellie Banister(1) and Julia Shipton 1857-1929. Children of (1) were Maurice Coates 1883-1956 m Dorothy Bell plus 1 son and 1 daughter; children of (2) were Arthur Coates 1888-1975, George Coates 1890-1968 m Beryl Francis(of S.Africa) plus 1 son and 1 daughter. Other children included John Coates -b. 1908 ; m Vera Bailey(1) and Lois Heesom(2) Their children included Patricia, Gillian and Phyllida b-1941 who m John Youngman. Other children of Maurice included Lance Coates, b-1909 m Seringa Arkell;Their children included Hugh Coates, Robin Coates plus 2 daughters. Max Bennett Coates m Denys Heesom(1) and Joy(2); Daphne Coates b-1918;m Owen Richards . Children of Joy Coates and Max Bennett Coates included Nicholas, b-1944 plus 2 sons. George Coates and Beryl Francis had 2 sons and 1 daughter... That's my Huff Coats, his son William and son James E. Coats, James is my great grandfather... A word of caution on these Cherokee census records...Huff I think was listed as Cherokee, when in fact he is white...but he was Cherokee by intermarriage, which means, when he was listed on the Cherokee census he was listed as Cherokee...Louisa his wife was actually the Cherokee... I also think the John H. Coats is Huff brother as well...but I don't know of any, if any, family for him...
