    3. This is a test of the Rootsweb lists I am on. It is also some information for the list administrator if they feel the list is not running as expected. And finally it is an attempt to get something posted to the list so Rootsweb does not turn the list off. The list admin should probably go to this page: http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ and try to set up a new mailman login, if not already done. If you do that you will probably get to this page eventually: https://mailinglists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/lists/setupmail Then you might want to sign up for this list: https://mailinglists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/search/Listowners But be warned, you will receive postings from that list almost every day.  May 8 a day at times. Another option that I do not encourage is to turn the list over to me - at least temporarily.  Again, I do not want that done if you are willing to keep the list. Mike Flannigan

    1. [CO-GHOSTTOWNS] Introduction of new administrator
    2. Dittmar, Frederick M.
    3. Greetings to all Colorado Ghost Town mail list subscribers. I'd like to first thank Kathleen Burnett for one starting the Ghost Town mail list for each state and your years as the administrator of this list. My name is Fred Dittmar and I am here to offer any help and direction I can. Although I'm not living in your state I may have some information to give you directions in researching. In order to stimulate my quiet lists I'm writing to ask some questions of you the subscribers. There are 31 subscribers on this mail list at the moment. No one on the list bites or says Boo to any questions or comments so feel free to write and talk with others. Where do you live? What Ghost Town or area are you interested in? What county was your Ghost Town located in? Are there any remnants left of the town? Foundations? Buildings? Cemeteries? Do you have any information about the time line of the town? Did it have a post office? If a cemetery is there is it currently maintained? Has it been surveyed and is it posted on the internet? What's the link? Do you know if the State has posted a Historic Sign or Marker noting the town or area? Please cite any sources (book, publication, family history) you find the information in. Thank you all. This is your mail list and it only works when you post and others answer and add to it. Fred - Mail List Administrator Frederick M. 2. Kathleen Burnett
    3. Rootsweb has changed the co-ghosttowns list to new servers beginning today. The new list names will be the same co-ghosttowns@rootsweb.com Note the L has been removed. Old address co-ghosttowns-L@rootsweb.com New address: co-ghosttowns@rootsweb.com If you have filters, you should set them to allow mail from the list as: co-ghosttowns@rootsweb.com Both email addresses will still work for a while for sending e-mail but you may not receive it if you don't change it in your address book Remember those on the digest mode send their email to the new address of co-ghosttowns@rootsweb.com Digest numbers will be out of sequence during the change over. A note for those members using AOL - there might a temporary delay in receiving list mail (on AOL's end). Make sure you check your spam folders, if you find any list mail there, click the THIS IS NOT SPAM button and read your mail in your inbox so the filters will be trained in regard to the new server. The main changes will be on my side in the Utility pages. Let me know if you have any concerns or questions. If I can't answer them, will find out the answer for us. I appreciate each of you and your understanding as we go through this change over. Kathleen Burnett List Mom

    1. From List Mom - A few things to think about.
    2. Kathleen Burnett
    3. Dear List Members, If you are interested in knowing about other genealogical mailing list available, one of the very best inventories of genealogical mailing lists is John Fuller's Genealogy Resources on the Internet located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html If you ever need to unsubscribe from this list or any Rootsweb list all you need to do is visit Password Central located at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will received an e-mail of all lists you belong to and from it you can unsubscribe from the ones you want to. Always know that I will be more than happy to help you if you are having problems unsubscribing, you only need to ask. Please send this request to KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net not to the entire list. If you would like to visit the Archived messages of this list, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you would like to search and from there you can search by dates. If you are having problem and I do not answer you right away, know that I will. I like many of you work full time outside of my home. I am fortunate that I can check my e-mail any time I wish, but know that there are spaces of time I cannot. I always check my e-mail each and every evening and will respond to message as quickly as possible. There are a few items I would like to suggest for the benefit of each of us. 1. When sending a posting to the list it would help if you would put the subject of your posting in the subject line. Doing this also might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. Many members are on many many lists and when they see a subject line that reads "My Ancestors" they just delete it. 2. When posting a query regarding a surname it would help all of us if you would put your surname in CAPS. This way the members can easily pick out the surnames you are looking for. On the other hand when the entire message is in CAPS we feel that we are being yelled at. 3. Please remember to delete the tags and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 5. Remember to keep your Virus protection up to date and never open any attached file unless you are 100% sure what it is and even then you are taking a chance. 6. Now, the hardest thing is when one of our own, a fellow member becomes upset about a posting from one from one of us. It is so hard not to jump in and add our two cents. I want you to know how much I appreciate it when you just let these posting go by and delete them. Know that I am behind the scenes taking care of the problem. If you ever have a concern that I might have missed a message that needs addressed you are welcome to contact me during the day at Kathleen.burnett@era.com or in the evenings at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net. 7. If your list has the gateway open, meaning the messages posted on the board also hit he list, know that every once in a while a SPAM message that is caught by the Board filter slips through the gateway and hits the list before it can be stopped. JUST DELETE IT. By responding to the list regarding he offending message, you just continue it on, and there is not one thing I can do about it at that point. Please remember, so that this list is better for each of us, the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc., in other words Spam is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net I want to thank each of you for your continued support of me and your willingness to help make this list the success it is. It is your list and is here for your benefit. If you have suggestions or comments you would like in future reports, you only need to send them to me. 2. Jim, You will find some information in one of my favorite reference works: Ormes, Robert, Tracking Ghost Railroads in Colorado (Colorado Springs, CO: Century One Press, 1975). The map on p. 42 (3-color) shows Long Canyon, Longs Junction, Parsons Cow Camp, and Martinson (also spelled Martinsen). The caption reads, "Denver Texas & Fort Worth, Longs to Martinson 1888, Removed by C&S 1908." The map on p. 41 (3-color) shows more detail of the Trinidad area, including "Longdale Junction." Pages 40 and 43 include some text describing the author's travels in the area in 1961 and 1971. Good luck, David ****************************************************************************** ** In a message dated 4/14/04 12:25:32 PM Mountain Daylight Time, jrhewitt@mcsi.net writes: > Subj:[CO-GHOSTTOWNS] Re: 1888-89 railroad camps > Date:4/14/04 12:25:32 PM Mountain Daylight Time > From: jrhewitt@mcsi.net (jim) > Reply-to: <A HREF="mailto:CO-GHOSTTOWNS-L@rootsweb.com">CO-GHOSTTOWNS-L@rootsweb.com</A> > To: CO-GHOSTTOWNS-L@rootsweb.com > > I am seeking information on the old settlements of Long's Junction, > DeRemer's Headquarters Tie Camp in Long's Cañon, Martinson and McWilliams (Circa > 1888-89 all of which were located south west of Trinidad, Colorado along the > Maxwell branch Union Pacific, Denver&Gulf railroad spur. 3. Hi, Continuing to use these books as my reference.... 1) "Jeep Trails To Colorado Ghost Towns" by Robert L. Brown - Caxton Printers 1963 + 1983 2) "guide to the Colorado Ghost Towns and Mining Camps" by Perry Eberhart - Swallow Press 1959 + 1969 - fourth printing, 1974, 1981, 1984 the only additional information I have for you is about the cemetery. "one of the publishers (of the newspaper) was J.E. Phillips, who also laid out the graveyard and was the first man to be buried in it. He was killed in an explosion while dynamiting fish." #2 "the stone marker for a little girl is the only one left in the Irwin graveyard." #2 "From here you may wish to continue on up the ill to the lake, a beautiful spot where the road ends. Going back down, just beyond the intersection on the road to Kebler Pass, there is an interesting memorial commemorating the site of the town cemetery with a single grave. It has one of those priceless inscriptions so dear to the hearts of Sunday newspaper feature editors. It goes like this: My good friends as you pass by, As you are now, so once was I. As I am now you soon will be, Prepare yourself to follow me. The cemetery was first known as Ruby Camp Cemetery in 1879 and 1880. In 1885 it was renamed Irwin Cemetery." #1 >Lonny, and all...I too am interested in Ruby City but during Dec 1881-1883 >approximately. My 2x-greatgranfather, Joseph C. 2. Julie Wirgau
    3. Hello, I have 2 Colorado Ghost Town books: 1) "Jeep Trails To Colorado Ghost Towns" by Robert L. Brown - Caxton Printers 1963 + 1983 2) "guide to the Colorado Ghost Towns and Mining Camps" by Perry Eberhart - Swallow Press 1959 + 1969 - fourth printing, 1974, 1981, 1984 I read about Ruby and Irwin in both of them last night. See Below: >I am searching for information on Ruby City, a mining camp once in >Gunnsion County, CO. It became part of Irwin, I believe. My >ancestor, Otho Henry Alburtis was in Ruby City in the 1880 Census. >He is listed as a white male, 27 years old, single, and occupation >of printer. Also in dwelling 108 is: Seems both cities were active from about 1879 to 1885. Ruby and several other camps were was absorbed by Irwin. Irwin died fast in 84 and 85. It is about 30 miles north of Gunnison on Ruby Gulch and sat at an altitude of 10,044 feet on Elk Mountain. Grant and Teddy Roosevelt were the notable visitors. "...The first ones didn't wait for spring. They built their cabins and stores in the dead of winter. When spring came and the snow started melting, some of the stumps of the trees they had cut down for cabins turned out to be ten-feet high. The tall tree stumps became a trademark of Irwin." #2 > >I would like more information on Ruby City and whether or not it had >a local newspaper. Since Otho's occupation is listed as printer, he >may have been working for a local newspaper. In 1880 how did a >person get to Ruby City from the east? Stage Coach, Wagon train, etc? "Irwin and its surroundings contained a great number of stores of all kinds, a stamp mill, large sampling works, six sawmills, one bank, three churches (Episcopalian, Methodist, and Presbyterian), one theater, many hotels (chief of which was the Elk Mountain House), a brass band, and a weekly newspaper called the 'Pilot'." #1 ".........Irwin had its share of newspapers, the first and most important being the 'Elk Mountain Pilot'. The first issue that came off the press in June 17, 1880, sold for $55, and the first six issues sold for a total of $158....." #2 Ruby and Irwin were built on Ute land, so a Minute Man company was organized. But there weren't any attacks. "The main highway of Kebler Pass, between Crested Butte and Somerset, goes within two miles to the right of the townsite. #1 "State Highway 135 north from Gunnison through Crested Butte should be followed to reach this area. Just beyond Crested Butte and before crossing Kebler Pass, turn right and watch for the United States Forest Service sign marking the town's site. The Forest Queen Mine still sits above the meadow on a huge tailings dump and about four cabins, two of them hidden in the trees across the creek, still stand." #1 >Also, could anyone tell me who the miners worked for? Did they work >their own claims or work for mining companies? These were silver mines. The Ruby Chief was the first mine claimed. The most famous, the Ruby King. and the Forest Queen, which employed 80 to 100 men for about 4 or 5 years. "2,000 claims were located and recorded and about fifty were developed into good paying mines." #2 >Thanks for any information >Lonny J. Watro >great granddaughter of Otho Henry Alburtis (1853-1929) I've enjoyed searching for ghost towns for many years and it is very interesting to here a personal side to the town histories. Julie

    2. Lonny, and all...I too am interested in Ruby City but during Dec 1881-1883 approximately. My 2x-greatgranfather, Joseph C. Broun/Brown was a miner there at that time. His wife, Mary Harrington Broun/Brown gave birth in September of 1882 to a baby girl and died, as family lore suggests. I would like to find out what really happened to Mary. If there was a paper in town at that time that would be fantastic news to me. I would also like to know who the miners of that area worked for, whether private mines or companies. I would love to know what records might still be available for that town (at that time) as I have heard through family that none exist due to a flood? or maybe it was a fire? Anyway, Any Help, information or advice would be very welcome. Thanks, Dianna Wickern Greatx2granddaughter of Joseph Broun/ and Mary Harrington(of Leadville)

    1. Ruby City, Gunnison County
    2. Lonny J. Watro
    3. I am searching for information on Ruby City, a mining camp once in Gunnsion County, CO. It became part of Irwin, I believe. My ancestor, Otho Henry Alburtis was in Ruby City in the 1880 Census. He is listed as a white male, 27 years old, single, and occupation of printer. Also in dwelling 108 is: David Shaw, white male, 29, single, engineer, born in Maryland. Blair Williams, white male, 39, married, dealer in grain, born in New York. John McDermott, white male, 30, married, miner, born in Ireland. Henry Bell, white male, 27, single, painter, born in Scotland Frank M Tibbuly, white male, 23, married, miner, born in Michigan James H Paynter, white male, 27, married, miner, born in England I'm not sure what kind of dwelling this is. Possibly a hotel room as dwelling 109 lists the name of three Hotel Keepers, one cook and two miners. In 1870, Otho Henry Alburtis was living at home with his widowed mother, Susan (Showers) Alburtis, in Martinsburg, West Virginia. Prior to the Civil War his father, Samuel Alburtis owned and was the editor of a local newspaper in Martinsburg. In the 1890's Otho Henry Alburtis was back east in Cumberland, Maryland working as a printer for a Cumberland newspaper, where he continued to work until he retired. He died and was buried in Cumberland, MD in 1929. However, no one in our family ever seemed to know of his little trip out west during the silver mining boom of Gunnison Co. I would like more information on Ruby City and whether or not it had a local newspaper. Since Otho's occupation is listed as printer, he may have been working for a local newspaper. In 1880 how did a person get to Ruby City from the east? Stage Coach, Wagon train, etc? Also, could anyone tell me who the miners worked for? Did they work their own claims or work for mining companies? Thanks for any information Lonny J. Watro great granddaughter of Otho Henry Alburtis (1853-1929)

    1. [CO-GHOSTTOWNS] Introduction of new member
    2. Caley A. Gredig
    3. Hello All, I just signed up on these lists and wanted to introduce myself. I am Caley Gredig. I currently live in Basalt, Colorado. I am willing to do lookups on records and newspapers for this area. I can easily get to Aspen, Glenwood, Eagle & Rifle. This makes it possible for me to research in all three counties here. I have just recently completed a comprehensive photographic inventory of the Basalt Fairview Cemetery and will be uploading the photos to usgenweb's tombstone project within the next couple of weeks. I will be doing a photographic inventory of the Wheatley Cemetery next week and should have access to an inventory of the Red Butte Cemetery in Aspen within a couple of weeks also. I will also be starting a Newspaper Extraction project within the next 2 months primarily for the town of Basalt but will also include other surrounding areas as well. Let me know if I can help anyone out. -- Best regards, Caley mailto:crazycrittr@earthlink.net

    2. Kathleen Burnett
    3. Dear List Members, If you were effected by the Comcast buy out, then you need to read this, if not delete it. Just this evening, I have receive over 100 requests for me to change e-mail address to a Comcast address. Many of these requests mention multiple lists of which the sender needs their e-mail address changed. It will take me a good week or so to get through them all. My suggestion is; If you still have the ability to unsubscribe go to PASSWORD Central at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ type in your old e-mail address, and follow the directions. You will receive an e-mail from which you can unsubscribe. If you can't do this, then you will just need to re-subscribe with your new address and let the old one bounce off. To re-subscribe this go to John Fuller's mailing list site http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html or remember you can subscribe and or unsubscribe by sending only the word UNSUBSCRIBE or SUBSCRIBE to XXXXXX-L-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM or XXXXXX-D-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM if you are on the Digest List. Naturally change the XXXXXX to the name of the list. If all else fails, contact me, but be understanding if it takes me a while to get to you. Kathleen Burnett List Mom

    3. Dear List Members, It is that time of year when some of you will be leaving on Vacations. You might want to consider unsubscribing from the list while you are gone and then resubscribing when you return. The easiest way to do this is by using Password Central. http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will receive a e-mail list of all Rootsweb Mailing Lists you belong to. You can unsubscribe using this e-mail. Save it and you then have a list of mailing lists you want to re-subscribe to. When you return, you can check the Archives for this list at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ Just type in the name of the list and you can check the messages for the dates you were gone. The following was shared with me and I think it is one of the best Maps I have seen showing the growth and history of the United States. http://www.animatedatlas.com/movie.html I appreciate each of you and know that it is because of you our list is the success it is.
