I am not sure of when he came to Franklin Co., but believe he was in York, PA prior to that. John was married to Catherine Canarryer (b. 1759 in Little York, PA; d. 19 Sep 1842 in Franklin Co., OH) John and Catherine's daughter, Christina, died in Licking Co., OH, on 2 Nov 1863, but lived in Franklin prior to that. She was married to Samuel Headley, who died in Franklin Co. I am wondering if possibly your Bernhart and my Christina are siblings? John Clouse's parents are likely Philip Clouse and Elizabeth Brede of Amsterdam. It is believed that at the age of 16 years John Clouse ran away from his home in Amsterdam, stole aboard a ship, and was not found until the third day out, when through hunger he was forced to come from his hiding place. Upon landing in New York he was sold for his passage over. (Source: A Genealogical Record of the Descendants of Leonard Headley, p. 70) During the Revolutionary War, John Clouse enlisted in Capt. John Reynold's company of Frederick County, Maryland, and served as a private in the Maryland Continental Line from 1775-1783. At the end of the war he received an honorable discharge and was declared a free man. (Source: Daughters of the American Revolution Lineage Books) Hope this helps. John Clouse is my g-g-g-g grandfather. Let me know if you believe you're related to him, too!
