Y'All - Found posted at rootsweb from ROANE COUNTY, TN - BIOGRAPHIES - Goodspeed Biographical Sketches L. W. Carter, farmer, was born in 1849, in Washington County, Tenn., and when twenty-four moved to Roane County, where he has since lived. He has acquired his education since maturity by reading and study, and began for himself when of age, as a day laborer. In 1876 he married Mary, a daughter of Alexander and Amanda (Hembree) Suddath. Their children are Cora L., Maggie A., Edgar, Maud, and an infant (deceased). She is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Mr. Carter is a Republican, and first voted for Grant. He is a Mason. After his marriage he purchased a farm, and he now owns a fine farm of 175 acres in Blue Spring Valley, the most of which property is the result of his own efforts at adding to some property he received from his wife. He has had several positions of trust, such as the administration of estates, school commis- sionership, etc. He is the second of ten children of Abraham and Catherine (Clouse) Carter, the former of whom was born in North Carolina, and came with his parents to Greene County in his youth. It was in Washington County where the father married. He was a justice, and a worthy and able Baptist minister. In the Third North Carolina Infantry, under Col. Kirk, he was an orderly sergeant. The mother was a daughter of William and Lizzie (Laudermilk) Clouse, the former of whom was a soldier in the war of 1812, under Gen. Jackson, and one of the earliest pioneers in Washington County. Y'All - Neil's posting caused me to do a little research. I found in the LDS file a Chatlotte TAPP b. 1787 in Virginia, but they had no marriage information on her. I searched rootsweb and found this on Christian Clouse in Hancock Co., TN CENSUS YR: 1860 TERRITORY: TN COUNTY: Hancock DIVISION: Sumpter District REEL NO: 653-1252 PAGE NO: 533b REFERENCE: Enumerated on the 6th day of August 1860 by Joseph Campbell 1107 1047 Clouse Christian 74 M Wheel Right 50 Tenn 1107 1047 Clouse Talitha 32 F Tenn 1107 1047 Clouse Tailor 12 M Tenn 1107 1047 Clouse Putman 9 M Tenn I had Talitha as Tabitha and Christian as being born in Virginia. Does anyone have data on Tailor or Putman [I suspect that Putman should be Putnam]? Propinquity being a major point in the possibility of Charlotte being Charlotte Tapp, I checked for Tapp on rootsweb and found that indeed there were Tapps in close relationship to Clouses. Hello. This is a little off topic but I just wanted to pass this along to you. In recent weeks, several people have mentioned that they wished they had listened to the older people in their families concerning the stories and family traditions of earlier times. Some of you have even mentioned that you are now trying to interest the children in your own families in genealogy (children, grandchildren, niece, nephew, etc.) so they don't have the same regrets that you do. As we all know, unless a child finds something at least remotely interesting, it is unlikely that they will retain stories, concepts, etc. for any length of time....if they ever get it at all. I recently found a series of books that some of you might be interested in. They are called American Kids in History by David C. King. The three of the series that I have are "Civil War Days," "Pioneer Days," and "Wild West Days." There are also other books like "Colonial Days" and "Victorian Days." Basically each book takes a fictional family and uses crafts, cooking, prose, making homemade toys, and other activities to show how they lived and interacted with each other and their environment. I'm not talking out of the top of my hat here, I homeschool my kids and I have reviewed a lot of children's materials and these books are good. It makes history interesting because it adds hands on type activities and stories that the child can relate to, as well as making it more personal by having the activities revolve around a fictional, but very believable, family. The books are also attractively bound (paperback) and interestingly llustrated with easy instructions for the crafts. I don't mean this to be a commercial or sponsorship of these books, but I wanted to pass the information along to those of you who are interested. After using these books, my kids are interested in finding out about our own ancestors and can more easily relate to them because they have an understanding of how the lived. It also gives them a kick to think that gre at great....grandfather so and so must have done this as a boy and he wore those kinds of clothes and great great....grandmother didn't get to wear pants (she had to wear long skirts with umpteen petticoats even in the hottest weather).....and now when they think about how Aunt and Uncle so and so left the rest of the family and moved west they understand how truly difficult a choice that must have been. Just a thought, Kathy in FL mamkmm2@prodigy.net
First, let me apologize to anyone who may have been affected/infected by a email post of mine. When I first realized what was happening I had to email everyone in my address book because I wasn't sure if the virus/worm had compromised my address book or not. Second, this is a really new one folks. Neither McAfee nor Norton recognized it at first. I had to go to a third virus scan to find it. Once I found it I was able to back track it using Symantec's website. As a matter of fact, it wasn't originally detected by the antivirus companies until 1-13-2000. What was happening...in case you are having the same problem...was that all my incoming mail was immediately being forwarded to my outbox and being returned to its sender...only now with my name on it...with an attachment. It went something like this: "Sorry that I can't respond immediately, but please check out this attachment and tell me what you think." As you can see, even if you knew the sender it was disguised so well that you might not suspect until it was too late that it could be a worm. Here is the website that will tell you more about it: www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.plage.worm.html The worm sets itself up in a file in windows called intend.exe So far I haven't found anything that will clean it up....so I performed radical surgery and just deleted the application. It hasn't affected the performance of my computer; however, the worm also altered my .ini file and now I have to figure out how to get it back the way it belongs. If anyone has any ideas .... please help. Again, I really am sorry if this has caused anyone any grief. I ought to know better, but I knew who the original sender was and didn't even think that it could be a worm/Trojan. If attachments are still going out on my emails, please let me know! Kathy in FL mamkmm2@prodigy.net
I am so sorry to have to be writing this. Sometime between midnight last night and 5 pm today, I apparently got infected with some kind of worm/virus. DO NOT open any attachments that you may have received from me. I'm not sending them. As my mail comes in it is automatically being diverted to my outbox and sent back out to whoever sent it to me in the first place. I'm not allowing this to happen and I can't figure out how to stop it. If anyone has heard of this particular worm/virus and knows how to stop it....PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP!!! I apologize if this has caused anyone any problems. I can't find any new .exe files on my hard drive and I am searching all the files that were modified within the last 24 hours. Any of you computer brains out there have any ideas...besides blowing up my hard drive....I'd really appreciate it!!! Kathy in FL mamkmm2@prodigy.net
