I am skeptical only because my father in law was so addement that his family came from Alsace/Lorraine area. I believe I have gotten information about your family in the past and have seen a picture of John. Surprisingly, there is some family resemblance between him and our Klous family, so I have not ruled out that possibility. Maybe you could contact me personally and we can compare notes. As little as I have. Again, thanks for the interest in this family. Judy Klous (judek@uslink.net)

I am not sure of when he came to Franklin Co., but believe he was in York, PA prior to that. John was married to Catherine Canarryer (b. 1759 in Little York, PA; d. 19 Sep 1842 in Franklin Co., OH) John and Catherine's daughter, Christina, died in Licking Co., OH, on 2 Nov 1863, but lived in Franklin prior to that. She was married to Samuel Headley, who died in Franklin Co. I am wondering if possibly your Bernhart and my Christina are siblings? John Clouse's parents are likely Philip Clouse and Elizabeth Brede of Amsterdam. It is believed that at the age of 16 years John Clouse ran away from his home in Amsterdam, stole aboard a ship, and was not found until the third day out, when through hunger he was forced to come from his hiding place. Upon landing in New York he was sold for his passage over. (Source: A Genealogical Record of the Descendants of Leonard Headley, p. 70) During the Revolutionary War, John Clouse enlisted in Capt. John Reynold's company of Frederick County, Maryland, and served as a private in the Maryland Continental Line from 1775-1783. At the end of the war he received an honorable discharge and was declared a free man. (Source: Daughters of the American Revolution Lineage Books) Hope this helps. John Clouse is my g-g-g-g grandfather. Let me know if you believe you're related to him, too!

Howdy! Which John Calvin Clouse is your gg-grandfather? The one I have was born 1852 in White County TN, the son of John "Jobe" Clouse and Mahala "Hallie" Bumbalough. This John was married to Delina Jame Bumbalough and they had 8 children. My husband's g-grandfather Isaac Wesley Clouse was this John Calvin's brother. I need any Information that can be Provided about Doctor Stubelfield Clouse
Michael, I am sure we would all be interested in the information you have found for John Dillard Clouse. If you post it here, many who will be looking later on will be able to access your information, and it could put them on the right track for tracing their own ancestry. I too am a descentant of James..I have trace this line both forward and as far back as the 1500's. I can provide this information if you so desire. Please email me off list.
My husband also descends from John Dillard Clouse, through Thomas J. to his son John born in 1827. I don't know if anybody has definite proof of this Clouse line further back than George-I have seen the "Pettiplace Clouse" info, but no real evidence that this is where they came from. I am sure we have all heard the "3 brothers came over from the old country" story (grin) that is in just about every family tree! I have just the line back to George and his wife Elizabeth Jarvis in my files until better evidence presents itself. My husband's Clouse line left TN in the 1880s and went to TX, and then on to OK and finally CA by the 1930s. Meg Gentry Bookout ps-I have not seen it, but Pat Franklin's book on the Clouse Family of TN is said to be quite good (she is a Clouse descendant).
