    3. What better way to start 2003 than to reach back and pull up one of those UNSOLVED CLOUD MYSTERIES. In the 1830 US Census for Decatur Co., GA there appears ZILPHA CLOUD on page 14 as head of household. Her age is reported as 20-30 and the record includes 1M<5 and 1M5-10. Most, who have expressed an opinion, believe that those two males are RANSOM CLOUD who was born in 1827 and MARTIN H. CLOUD who was born in 1825. Then, one year later, on 5 Dec 1831, ZILPHA CLOUD marries MOSES OLIVER in Decatur Co., GA. According to the 1840 US Census for MOSES OLIVER in Decatur Co., GA, ZILPHA is shown as 1F30-40 which is consistent with the age of 20-30 from the 1830 census record. The 1850 US Census for MOSES OLIVER in Decatur Co., GA shows ZILPHA as 35 years old [instead of the expected age of 40-50]. Included with this census record are M. CLOUD [presumed to be MARTIN H. CLOUD], RANSOM CLOUD, and five OLIVER children. The UNSOLVED MYSTERY: Is Zilpha the older sister of MARTIN H. and RANSOM CLOUD? If this is the case, we need parents [a mother and a CLOUD father] who were married on or before 1804 [assuming ZILPHA was b: c 1805]. The earliest CLOUDS showing up in Southwest Georgia were ELIZABETH CLOUD, widow of PETER CLOUD, and JOHN CLOUD [b: c 1782] when they appeared in Early Co., GA [later Decatur Co] in 1820. Then, we have to wonder about the lapse of time from ZILPHA'S birth of 1805, and MARTIN'S birth of 1825. This is 20 years. OR Is ZILPHA the mother of MARTIN H. and RANSOM CLOUD? If this is the case, we need a CLOUD father who married ZILPHA circa 1824. This is the year after Decatur County, GA was created from Early County, GA. There were limited candidates that can fit and the best candidate is REUBEN CLOUD (b: c 1803). He was 21 years old in 1824 and we don't have a record of a marriage for him until 11 Oct 1830 to Lotty Gideons. It is possible that he could have married ZILPHA __________ in 1824, fathered MARTIN H. CLOUD and RANSOM CLOUD and left ZILPHA for a marriage to LOTTY GIDEONS in 1830. REUBEN'S brother, MANSICO, was b: 1812 and would be too young to qualify as a candidate. Reuben's older brother, JOHN CLOUD (b: c 1782) was there at the time and was old enough to qualify. BUT, JOHN's first wife, MARY SHIPES CLOUD was enumerated with him in the 1830 US Census in Decatur Co., GA. I have never seen a date of death for his wife MARY, but JOHN CLOUD m: 2nd SARAH DEAN on 11 Sep 1838 so we can assume that MARY SHIPES CLOUD died between 1830 and 1838. Incidentally, the marriage to SARAH DEAN in 1838 does not appear on the Decatur County marriage indices. And, JOHN'S four sons were too young, the oldest being born in 1809, or 15 years of age in 1824. Somewhere, there are other pieces to this puzzle and I hope that those of you on this CLOUD LIST will offer them up. For example, one of the keys to the above theories is a factual age for ZILPHA CLOUD. Was she born in 1805 as indicated by the 1830/1840 census records, or was she born in 1815 as indicated by the 1850 census record. I have census records for ZILPHA OLIVER for 1870 and 1880 but have not located a census for her for 1860. Is there another alternative theory to the two presented above?

    3. Rex -- I don't know whether it's pertinent, but a son of Judge Joel Cloud (abt 1789-1855) of Rutherford Co., NC, was named Ransom Pinckney Cloud. Born about 1806 in Rutherford, he married Katherine Hildebrand and had -- acc. to my records -- four children, but no son named "Ransom" (the only male was "Joel"). His sister, whose first name I don't have, married a chap named Tallent and named a son "Ransom Cloud Tallent." "Ransom" is an unusual name, so it's hard to believe that there's not some connection.
