    3. Imogene, Ron, et al. -- You have convinced me about the identity of the Benjamin Franklin Cloud who married Nancy Middleton. The census data you cite, Ron, nails it. Good to have that cleared up. As to the larger question of his father's parentage, as well as that of the Benj. F. who married Susannah Bondurant and of the Joseph who was married to Jane Carpenter, I tend to agree with you, Imogene, that these were all sons of Capt. William Cloud Rev. S., of Stokes Co., NC/Henry>Patrick>Carroll Cos., VA, by his second wife, Elizabeth Morgan. Regarding Joseph, my notes on him refer to P. G. Fulkerson's diary as explicitly stating that his father's name was "William." Parenthetically, on the subject of this Joseph and the argument sometimes made that he was the Joseph who came "over the mountain" to what became East Tennessee, I would like to make the point that it would not be unlikely that any number of families in that neck of the woods at that time had a tradition about an "over the mountain" ancestor, since that is how virtually all of them got there. I think the fact that this Joseph (m. Jane Carpenter) was thus labeled within his own family doesn't rule out that the "over the mountain" Joseph in A. M. Cloud's account was, as has been argued in a previous comment in this thread, a different and earlier Joseph: his uncle, Capt. (Maj.?) Joseph Cloud Jr. of Stokes Co., NC, who spent a number of years in the Rogersville area before returning to NC. As to that older Benjamin you refer to, Ron, who in the 1830 census of Claiborne Co., was pegged as 70-80 years old (therefore born between 1760-1770), I propose that there's a good case to be made that he was yet another brother of Capt. William, Capt. Joseph, Isaac, and Jason - all of the Peter's Creek, NC/VA brood. I suggest that he was the same Benjamin who was listed in at least two pre-Statehood records: 1789 - A petition was submitted to the North Carolina General Assembly by "sundry inhabitants of the Western District, below Brown's Line." Included among the signatories were Isaac Cloud, Jason Cloud, Joseph Cloude, Jeremiah Cloud, Benj. Cloud, Tidence Lain (sic), and Tidence Lane. [North Carolina State Archives, Raleigh. General Assembly Records, Box 1, Nov-Dec 1789, Folder 18. In Tennessee Ancestors, Apr. 2004, p. 14 (Transcribed by Cherel Bolin Henderson)] 1790 -- On Hawkins County, TN., List of Voters (for representative for Congress, western district of N. C.): Benj. Cloud, Isaac Cloud, Jason Cloud, Joseph Cloud. [Hawkins County Genealogical and Historical Society, Distant Crossroads, vol. V, p. 2[1]] Other records indicate that this Benjamin also had a son named Benjamin. One of the questions yet to be answered (maybe it never will be) is whether he too ended up in Claiborne to add to the Benjamin Muddle. Like crossword puzzles, this stuff becomes addictive. Thanks for the good exchange of information. Harry P.S. to Ron - in your July 27 post, you listed the members of Susannah Bondurant Cloud's household as named by the 1850 census. When you wrote "Greenville," did you mean "Greenberry?" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Original Message ----- From: "Imogene Bennett" <Imogene.Bennett@att.net> To: <CLOUD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 27, 2006 5:21 PM Subject: [CLOUD] Re: BENJAMIN CLOUD WILL FOUND IN CLAIBORNE > To Harry and others interested, I think there were two Benjamin Franklin > CLOUDs you are contending with.
