Harry, I agree that the Benjamin Cloud that married Sussanah must have died about 1842. The Benjamin F. Cloud that married Mary Polly Chadwell died 14 Feb. 1845. They are completely different individuals. If you take a look at the 1840 census of both Claiborne Co. TN and Lee Co. VA you will find three individuals listed concurrently with the name Benjamin Cloud. 1840 Census of Claiborne Co. TN: Benjamin F. Cloud 0-0-0-0-1 [20-30 years old or born 1810-1820] Benjamin Cloud 0-0-2-1-0-0-0-0-1 [60-70 years old or born between 1770 and 1780] 1840 Census of Lee Co. VA: Benjamin Cloud 0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-1-0-0-0 [ 70-80 years old or born between 1760-1770] You will find this Benjamin listed with the following Chadwells: Pleasant; William; David; and Alexander....all a generation or two younger. This Benjamin married Mary Polly Chadwell. Now if you examine the Claiborne Co. TN 1830 Census you will find the following: Benjamin Cloud Sr. 0-0-0-0-2-0-0-0-1-0-0-0-0 [ 60-70 years old or born between 1760-1770] .....Low and behold we find another a just little bit younger: Benjamin Cloud Jr. 2-2-2-0-0-0-0-1-0-0-0-0-0 [50-60years old or born 1770-1780] With regard to the "one other point": Widowed Sussanah can be found in both the 1850 Census of Claiborne Co. TN Dwg. 23, Fam. 23 listed as Susan Cloud age 60 F. born TN; Leander Cloud age 27; Greenville Cloud age 26; Nancy O.Cloud age 20; Louisa Cloud age 15; Oleny Cloud age 8, .... along with what are probably married daughters and their children. The 1860 Missouri Census lists B. F. Cloud Physician as the head of the family but the family includes Sussana at age 71. I agree that Dr. Cloud was probably the son of Susanna. By the way I remember that in one of either the Lee County sources or the Claiborne sources there was a short write up on Dr. Benjamin Cloud. Dr. Benjamin Cloud however should not be confused with Benjamin Cloud b. 1826 that married Nancy Middleton. The doctor was born later about 1830-34. See the following: 1850 US Census of Claiborne County, Tennessee lists the family as follows: "Cloud, Benjamin F., age 24, with Nancy, age 22, T, KY" - C1-614-562. 1860 US Census of Harlan County, Kentucky list the family as follows: "Family 81, Cloud, B.F. age 33, TN; Nancy age 30, KY; Alexander age 7, TN; Greenberry age 6, Benjamin age 4, TN; Mary age 3, TN; James age 1, KY. 1870 US Census of Rocky Station, Lee County, Virginia reads as follows: "Dwg 73 Fam 73 Cloud, Frank age 44,M, W, Works Farm, born Claiborne County, TN" (1826); "Nancy, age 41, F, W, Keeping Hse, born Harlan County, KY" (1829); "Alexander age 18, M, W, Works Farm, born Claiborne County, TN" (1852); "Greenberry age 16, M, W, Works Farm, born Claiborne County, TN " (1854); "Benjamin age 14, M, W, Works Farm, born Claiborne County, TN " (1856); "Mary E. , age 13, F, W, (illegible), born Claiborne County, TN, (1857); "James, age 11, M, W, born Harlan County, KY " (1859); "William,age 8, M, W, Harlan County, KY(1862); "Shelly L. age 5, M, W, born Harlan County, KY " (1865); "Sarah age 2, F, W, born Harlan County, KY (1868). The Benjamin Cloud that married Nancy could not have been in two places at once. I spent quite a lot of time researching the Benjamin Cloud that married Nancy at the court house in Claiborne TN and Harlan County, TN. I made copies of their marriage certificate that was in one of the old record books and traced him every 10 years thereafter. Further, he did not go to Missouri but can be found in Harlan Co. KY. Nancy's father was in Harlan Co. KY a little earlier and I suppose that is why they went there. In addition, much more about Benjamin and Nancy can be found in the pension application filed by Nancy. The migration of this Cloud family can be determined by the census data: After their marriage in 1850 the family lived in Claiborne County, Tennessee until after Mary E. was born in 1857. They moved to Harlan County, Kentucky until after the birth of Sarah in 1868. They moved to Rocky Station, Lee County, Virginia and are found in the 1870 Census there. According to Nancy's pension application they moved back to Harlan County, KY and lived there for the remaining period of their lives. It should be noted that Benjamin Franklin (Frank) Cloud enlisted in the Confederate cause on 21 September 1862 and was paroled at Cumberlan Gap, 28 April, 1865. "Kentucky Confederate Pension #149 received 6-12-1912, Nancy residence of Harlan County, Kentucky since 1870, Nancy b. 1827 Claiborne County, TN. Service Co. G 27 VA Bat Cav; later 25 cav, served three years, "As far as she knows"; Co surrendered at Appomatox, VA, Ref. say B.F. enlisted 21 Sept. 1862, Co G, 25 cav, was paroled Cumberland Gap, 28 Apr. 1865. Husband died at Dezuryby (Dezney), Harland County, Kentucky, she has not remarried, "Have you a family?" "No". Gives William Cloud of Dezney, Kentucky as reference. Nancy signs "X", Pen. allowed 3 June 1912. Wm Cloud, Adm. of Nancy Cloud, deceased, dated 12 Jan 1914, Harlan County, Kentucky. Copy of marriage cert. Claiborne County, TN 12 May 1850" Found in Descendents of William Cloud, Note 636 Benjamin Franklin Cloud, by Kenny Cloud generated by Ancestral Quest. From this record we see that Nancy returned to Harlan County, Kentucky after 1870. In the census data, on and after 1880, we find "Frank" with Nancy living in Harlan County, Kentucky as follows: US 1880 Census of Harlan County, Kentucky District #12: "Frank Cloud, age 55, b. KY; Nancy,age 53, b. KY; Green, age 26, b. KY; James, age 21, b.KY; Bill, age 18, b. KY; Shelby, age 15, Sarah, age 12, b. KY; Frank (grandson), age 2, b.KY. " US 1900 Census of Yockums Creek, Mag. Dist. 2, Harlan County, Kentucky:"Benjamin F. Cloud b. April 1826, TN, age 74; Nancy (wife), b. September 1827, KY, age 72, Benjamin F. (grandson) b. October 1879, KY, age 22, James, (grandson), b. August 1879, age 20." US 1910 Census of Harlan County, Kentucky household # 80 lists family without Benjamin Franklin Cloud b. 1826 as follows: Cloud, Nancy age 84; Wm M. age 47; Frank age 32; Mary J. age 26 ; Henry age 17; Greenberry age 15; Louisa age 10; Laura age 7; Pearl age 7; Saran age 5; Serepta age 4; Jessie age 3; Alice age 3; Simon age 3. As you can see William is still at home with his wife Jane, Frank (the grandson) is still living there with his wife Mary. James (the grandson) has his own household #82 married to a Mary with two children, Harrison and Jessie. James the son can also be found with his family #89 married to Jane Browning.
