    1. Re: [CLOUD] grave photos of family of William Augustine Cloud
    2. Hi Cousins, I have seen several graves like the ones in question. I think it was a style in southern graves during the 1800's. We have several (all on one plot) in our family cemetery in Henry County, Georgia. It is called the Elliott family cemetery, but the first grave made there was for our highly esteemed ancestor, Mary Cloud Elliott, born Mary Cloud, in Pennsylvania in 1773. She married George Elliott also of Pennsylvania. Around 1820 the family migrated with their adult children to the south. First settling in Gwenette county, Georgia where George is buried and later moving to Henry County in about 1823.Much of the land continues to stay in our family and we are now in the 8th generation on that land, and Mary was the first. Mary Cloud Elliott also had the two brothers nearby, Ezekiel Cloud and Jeremiah. Anyway, about two plots away from Mary Clouds grave is a plot of some kin folk that used those above ground stone boxes to mark their graves. When we were kids we figured that if we lifted the lid we would behold the skeletons of one of our ancestors. Fortunately, good sense came before we got strong enough to lift the lids. My guess is that the grave in the picture fell victim to some strong pubescent boys who were trying to scare themselves but only got pinched fingers for their trouble. Once they pulled that foot piece out they found that they were just playing with an unusual grave stone, not a crypt. I visit Mary Cloud's grave every time I go back to Georgia and my children have instructions to spread my ashes among the dust of Mary and the rest. If any of you have information about Mary's parents or ancestors, I would appreciate hearing about them. My intuition is that she descends from William Cloud who came with the Quakers in 1681 or so.
