Tom -- I feel pretty sure that this was the guy usually deisgnated Joseph Cloud Jr., of the Peter's Creek family. He fought in the Rev. (King's Mountain, for one battle) and is generally referred to as Capt. Cloud (acc. to one source, "Major"). He was prob. married to Mary ("Polly") Lawson. A surveyor as well as farmer, he was an early settler of the area that became northeast Tennessee and helped to lay out Rogersville, county seat of Hawkins Co., TN, as well as holding a number of other county offices. After a period in Tenn, he returned to Stokes Co., where he lived until his death in 1825.
