    2. RAYMOND SHIRLEY SR.
    3. That Joseph Cloud was my ancestor. He was Captain Joseph Cloud married to Polly Ukn. He led a company of mounted militia at the battle of King's Mountain and Cowpens. He received several generous land grants from the Governor of North Carolina following the War of Independence. One grant was for 3,000 acres in Stokes County laying on the waters of Peter's Creek and Snow Creek and Furies Fork. He was very active and involved in local and state political affairs. He was a judge in local elections. He was a Justice of the Peace and served on the bench of Stokes County Superior Court. He was appointed a Commissioner to settle estate problems and served as guardian of the interests of orphaned and illegitimate children. He was the surveyor for Stokes County. He died in March, 1828.
