Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr., Index to the Headright and Bounty Grants of Georgia 1756-1908, (Georgia Genealogical Reprinrs, Vidalia, Ga.), p 632. Joseph Stubbs is listed as receiving 100 acres in Wilkes County in 1788 and 100 acres in Columbia County in 1794. I assume this is my Joseph. > >6. R.J. Taylor Jr. Foundation, An Index to Georgia Tax Digests 1789- 1799, Vol 1, (The Reprint Co: Spartanburg, SC, 1986), p 70. Joseph is listed in Warren County, Ga. in 1798. > >7. William Wade Hinshaw, Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol 1, (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1969), pp 1045 and 1050. Joseph Stubbs was condemned on 1-10(Oct)-1785 for marrying out of unity in Wrightsborough. See Davis's work for more discussion on the matter. The children of Joseph and Zilpha are listed in the Wrightsborough MM, Ga. along with birth dates. Joseph is not listed and was probably born in Ohio. Abraham and Zilpha are listed and probably died prior to the date of the will. Rhoda was born in December 1802 which supports their move to Ohio in 1803. > >8. Robert Scott Davis, Jr., Quaker Records in Georgia: Wrightsborough 1772-1792, Friendsborough 1776-1777, (Roswell, GA: WH Wolfe Associates, 1986),(copies available from Agusta Genealogical Society), pp 103, 151,161, and 163. More information is given than is found in Hinshaw's work. On 1st day of the 10th Mo. 1785 at Wrightsborough MM, Ga. is recorded the following entry: "Joseph Stubbs appeared here and offered a paper of acknowledgement for his Disorderly Marriage and also for having Carnal Knowledge of her that is now his wife before Marriage ..." Joseph and Zilpha had relation in 1783 in order for Mary Stubbs to be born in Jun 1784, a considerable time from the condemnation in 1785. Usually condemnation occurs as soon as the marriage is noted or the girl is noticeably pregnant. I do not have a civil marriage record but the Quaker entry indicates that a marriage took place probably in 1785. Also included are a couple of letters that indicate that Joseph was single in W! r! > ightsborough in 1782. The children of Joseph and Zilpha Stubbs are also listed from the Wrightsborough minutes. > >9. "Warren County Deeds Book 'A'" as found in Georgia Genealogical Magazine, 1967, p 48. Joseph Stubbs is a witness to a land transaction in 1787 from James Rowland to Peter Cox, both of Richmond County. Land was on the Little and Big Sweetwater Creeks. > >10. William F. Medlin, Quaker Families of South Carolina and Georgia, (Ben Franklin Press, 1982), pp 71 and 123. The book lists the children of Joseph and Zilpha along with year birth dates probably taken from Wrightsborough Monthly Meeting records. > >11. William Wade Hinshaw, Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol IV, (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1973), p 446. The children are listed again at Stillwater MM, Ohio along with their birth dates and the death date of Abraham. There are differences in the dates for Rachel, Jacob, Deborah, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Zlpha, Eliza, and Rhoda. Joseph is listed for the first time. Rhoda is listed as being born on 3 Dec 1803. If the family moved to Ohio in 1803, then Rhoda was probably born in 1802 since she was listed in the Wrightsborough minutes. Since I believe Rhoda's birth is in error, I will go with the dates from Wrightsborough. Also listed are the marriages for Deborah to Robert Vernon on 6-11(Nov)-1811; Rebecca to John Patton on 27- 11(Nov)-1816; Eliza to Elijah Hanson on 26-8(Aug)-1818; Rhoda to James Vernon on 4-6(Jun)-1823; Isaac to Elizabeth Doudna along with three of their children; Sarah Hall (formerly Stubbs) was dismissed for marrying contrary to ! d! > iscipline on 31-10(Oct)-1809; Elizabeth Cox (formerly Stubbs) was dismissed for marrying contrary to discipline on 27-4(Apr)- 1813. Joseph died on 1-5(May)-1816 and was buried at Stillwater. Deborah and Rhoda's marriages are also listed in the LDS Church IGI. >Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy: Ohio > [p.137] CONCORD MONTHLY MEETING > page 160 > 1805, 7, 23. Powell, Tombstone Inscriptions & Family Records of Belmont County, Ohio, (Akron, O: author, 1969), p 279. An entry under Friends Stillwater Meeting House stated that Joseph Stubbs and Dau. Joseph Stubbs arrived in Warren Township in 1803 from Georgia. The book also gives information on life in the area at that time. > >15. Letter from Thomas E. Ferguson, Auditor of State, Columbus, OH 43216 to author, original in posession of author. Joseph obtained 161.44 acres in Somerset Twp., Belmont Co, O (R6, T7, S13) on 6 Sep 1815 and another 161.50 acres (R6 T7, S14) on 1 Dec 1815. On a map found at the National Archives in Record Group 49 (Bureau of Land Management), in M477 or M478 is found a Plat of District of Steubenville in ca 1805. A Joseph Stibbs is listed. > >16. This informative book contains the men's Monthly Meeting of Bush River, SC and Wrightsborough, Ga, as well as general information of the Quakers during the Revolutionary War. > In a letter from John Townsend and Joseph Rowe, dated 9-1(Jan)-1782, he stated that 200 people [I assume only Quakers included.] lived in and around Wrightsborough to include John Stubbs, wife and 11 children, Thomas Stubbs, single, Joseph Stubbs, single, John Carson and wife, and Esther Carson. [I assume Thomas and Joseph Stubbs to be children of Thomas Stubbs, Jr. I also assume John Carson to be the one m. to Esther Stubbs Cloud who had a dau named Esther.] John Stubbs, Thomas Stubbs, Joseph Stubbs, and John Carson were also mentioned in a letter dated 2-1(Jan)-1782 telling of their sad plight during the war. > >17. "Last Will and Testament of Joseph Stubbs", 19 Apr 1816, Will Book A, pp 276 and 277, Belmont County Probate Judge, St. Clairville, OH 43950, certified copy in possession of author. Joseph gave $80 each to his daughters Mary Hays, Sarah Hall, Rachel Hinson, Deborah Varnom, Elizabeth Cox, Rebecca Stubbs, Eliza Stubbs and Rhoda Stubbs. He gave to his sons as follows: Isaac, 40 acres, smith tools and $80; Jacob, a sorrel horse and to Jacob's children- land (he gave it to Jacob's children even though Jacob could live on it until his death); Iddo-land and a grey mare; Joseph-land and a grey horse; Zelpha was his wife and was allowed to live on the farm the rest of her life. This disagrees with a note in Hathaway's book (no. 13) that she died in Elkton in 1807. She is also listed in the 1820 census of Belmont County. Rebecca, Eliza and Rhoda each received a cow, bed and a kettle. Abraham and daughter Zilpha were not mentioned. Iddo, Joseph, Rebecca, Eliza and Rhoda were not ! o! > f age. > >18. Daniel Nathan Crumpton, Cemeteries and Genealogy Warren County, Georgia and Immediate Vicinity, (W.H. Wolfe Assn: Roswell, GA, 1987), pp 170,180, and 220. Joseph Stubb was mentioned in a land transaction in BK A, p 153 on 2 Jun 1795; a witness on 17 May 1794 in BK A, p373 and on 17 May 1794 in BK A, p377. Peter Cox, his step-father, was the buyer in both cases. Joseph was a witness on 17 May 1794 per BK A, p 383. He was a witness to Peter Cocks' purchase (I assume Cox) on 1 Oct 1790 per BK A, p387. Joseph was a witness on 23 Aug 1799 per BK C, p 9. Other Joseph Stubbs in 1809 and 1813 was probably the son of John and Esther Stubbs. > >20. 1820 U.S. Census, Belmont County (Warren Township), Ohio, National Archives Microfilm M33, roll 86, p 272. > Name 0 10 16 16 26 45 0 10 16 26 45 > 10 16 18 25 44 up 10 15 25 44 up >Warren Twp. >Stubbs, Iddo - - - 1 - - - - 1 - - > " , Isaac 2 - - - 1 - 2 - - 1 - > " ,Jacob 3 - - - 1 - 1 - - 1 - > " , Zilpha - 1 - - - - - - 1 - 1 >The children listed with Zilpha would be Joseph and Rhoda. > > > > >Ralph L.
