In all of my years of genealogical research, I have never been exposed to such erroneous information. The article is not worthy of wrapping fish and I hope that one day the article can be exposed for what it is so that future generations will not be misled as I have been. Eighteen years ago I sent a copy of the article to CFA in the fond hope that I could be certified as a true descendant of a Revolutionary War Soldier, Noah Cloud. All of the assertions in the article proved this to be so. But, thanks to our CFA Historian, Janice Cloud, I was appraised of the many discrepancies in the article and I have since proved to myself that she was correct in her analysis of the assertions. Janice was kind enough to send me a copy of her 1986 letter to the Corrections Genealogist, NSDAR that addressed the many errors in the article. Janice has given me permission to scan and post a copy of this 2- page letter should there be an interest Your web site for [mykindred.com] is FABULOUS, and I look forward to learning more of the details which you have presented. This brings up a question. Where can I see the sources for the information you present on me [Ralph Byron “Rex” Sanders and my wife, Ruth Rosemarie Sager.]? If I read the data correctly, you show me-and my wife as DECEASED. As of this writing, we are both very much alive and I would like to correct the information at your source. And, finally, your documentation references to “Early Families of Decatur County” should be deleted. I was surprised that you did not include a documentation reference to my research that was published in the Cloud Family Journal, Volume XXIV, Nos. 3 & 4, pages 61 thru 71. This research was devoted to Decatur County, Georgia and Edgefield County, South Carolina. This research corrects most, but not all, of the mistakes published in “Early Families of Decatur County. To answer some of your questions -- the web family history is very time consuming. Many people submit things -- today I received letters and photos of my uncle Billy who died in WW-II before I was born. I've just received several thousand names for one of my maternal (STURROCK) lines, and I receive notes every day to add or correct things in the data. If people don't include sources, then I don't have them, and I admit that sometimes I fail to note where things came from. I am not a genealogist and most of this data is not the result of my own research, so I'm limited by what others give to me. If people submit data in gedcom format, then the sources (should) come through if they have entered them, but if I have to type everything in, it's possible some things don't get entered correctly. Per your question -- "why am I listed as deceased" ? If there are no dates, the software can't make a determination. When I am informed of errors, I correct them. I am very careful to not list the data of living people. WRT your question about your submission to the Cloud Family Journal. Back to my first answer -- frankly, I scan the journal when I receive it, but my time is almost completely taken up by what people send to me. Any reading / research I do of my own is into my own family. Right now I am again attempting to find out where my g-g-grandmother Cynthia Ann Sorrelle Wiess came from, and whether Walter Wingate Wiess was actually her son of not. This is one of my other family branch's ongoing research dilemmas, and the descendants of Walter would like to know .... I keep telling them they need a DNA Project! Another ongoing project is that of Mourad Bumstead, my g-g-grandfather, and a veteran of the Siege of Bexar in December 1835. The Siege of Bexar Descendants Association needs some help and, silly me, I've offered to assist where I can. Bottom Line -- if you don't mind, help me get these things straight. Based on what you've told me, I think there ought to be a place online where the errors of this document are shown, don't you? The paper has been published and people will continue to be confused by it, so I would like to have a place that sets the record straight, as much as is possible. If you will send me the letter from Jan, I think that ought to be posted with this article. sincerely, Tom Cloud
Tom Interestingly enough, I read your words here and find that you sound a bit like I do, trying to find a place for everything and in many cases not having a clue other than what someone has provide. It appears that we are both working towards and uncommon end, and that is a shame. I dont really suppose that the CFA will ever make public the database they work from and because of that I have gone out on my own and kept the Cloudweb site going. Again I started looking for my own line, but ran into and was provided so much colateral info that I didn't want to just throw away, so as it became available, I examined it and if it seemed plausible added it to my data. I am sure there are many errors in my data, but if the error is there and someone can correct it, I feel the effort has been worth while. I really doubt that I will continue this for much longer, age and all that; so my real wonder is what will happen to it after I am gone. There so much valuable info there and I would hate for it just to go dormant and be lost and not available for researchers that follow. I guess time will tell what will become of it. My kids are not really interested, so I guess will give it all the CFA and let it just lay there. Enough of this. Just venting a little I guess.
