First, I'm going to admit that I'm not a "professional" genealogist - in fact, I'm not even a good "amateur" genealogist, and I'm going to defer to Harry Hogan as the "expert" in the area I'm about to address. First, James Madison Cloud was my gggrandfather. He was one of at least three sons of Isaac Cloud, Jr., b. ca 1787 (George, b. 1810; James Madison, b. 1816; and Benjamin Franklin, b. 1832. Family stories suggest another, Francis Marion Cloud, who "moved to Texas after the Civil War."). This data came from Ray Hunt (deceased) who did extensive work on Isaac's descendants, including census and land records as well as conversations with grandchildren of James Madison Cloud. Ray asserted that Isaac, Jr.'s father was Isaac Sr. Isaac Sr. was listed in the SC census in 1790; however, he lived in Rutherford Co, NC less than a mile norfth of the SC line and Ray believes the census taker was from SC and counted him in that census. The 1784 tax rolls for Surry Co., NC showed Isaac Sr. with 1 male over 21, 3 males under 21, and 2 females. The 1782 tax rolls showed Joseph Cloud 8, Isaac Cloud of VA, and William Cloud of VA. Ray believed that Isaac Sr. had these children: Isaac, b. 1787; Jesse; John; Jeremiah; and possibly, Joel. James Madison Cloud left TN in 1868, broke after the Civil War, with his wife Margaret Drummond King whom he married in 1838 in Murray Co, GA, to go to Louisiana to "be near relatives." While in Rapides Parish, LA in 1868, he caught fever, died, and "had to be taken to higher ground to be buried." His wife and the kids (oldest ca 21 years of age) headed back to TN and ended up in Scott Co, MS. (Side comment: James and his family lived in McMinn and Polk Counties, TN, and was reported to go back and forth between TN and GA.) Questions for the experts: Was the mysterious Jeremiah, b. 1784 who married Elizabeth and for whom everyone is searching a son of Isaac Sr.? If so, he would have been a brother of Isaac Jr. and an uncle of James Madison Cloud. Jeremiah's children would have been first cousins of James Madison Cloud. Further, could the family stories of a Francis Marion Cloud being a son of Isaac Jr. who went to Texas after the Civil War be confused with a Francis Marion Cloud who was in fact a son of Jeremiah and therefore a first cousin of James Madison Cloud - and perhaps the relative they were going to LA to be near? Sic 'em experts, and let us have your thoughts. Al Cloud. As usual, I'm a day late and a dollar short. If I had waited one more day for the delivery of my CFJ, Vol. XXIV, Nos. 3 & 4, I would not have needed to post my query regarding Early County, GA. Maybe I can claim that "great minds move in the same channel." I applaud the scholarship Mr. Sanders has applied to his research. If Mr. Sanders or someone else will be so kind as to send me a snail mail or email address, I have one question and one comment to direct to Mr. Sanders. Ray Shirley RAYMOND SHIRLEY SR. There was a resounding silence following my earlier query. I will give it another try. Have any of you done research on the Elizabeth Cloud who lived in Early County, GA in 1820? Or the John Cloud living in Early County, GA in 1840 and apparently newly married? How came a Cloud family to be living among the Creek Indians in southwest GA as early as 1820? Ray Shirley RAYMOND SHIRLEY SR. [email protected] Why Wait? Move to EarthLink.
Have any of you Cloud cousins in Georgia run across a record of the marriage of John Franklin Cloud to a Georgia gal named Eliza _____? The marriage would have occurred in about 1840. RAYMOND SHIRLEY SR. [email protected] Why Wait? Move to EarthLink.
Betsy I remember seeing a page on the LDS site that addresses your question. It tells how to prepare for a visit and research--I haven't been in that part of the site lately, but you should be able to find it through the front page--perhaps checking subjects like 'library' or 'visit' or whatever. Sorry not to be more specific, but you should be able to find it. Can anyone give me some general advice as to looking up genealogy through the Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-Day Saints? I'm going to Salt Lake City, Utah in about two weeks and would like to go to the library there. Of course, I don't know where that library is located or if I need permission. I have a CD titled Census Index: Colonial America. I looked around for Shelton's and Cloud's. Ironically, although there were 27 Shelton families and 10 Cloud families, there was only 1 county that had both a Shelton and a Cloud. Charles Shelton was polled in 1779 and Charles Cloud was polled in 1773, both in Fauquier County. Sorry, wouldn't have a clue as to any possible names of children. Good Luck. Lura

William H. Cloud was my Great Grandfather He was born in Hardin County, Ohio about 1848. His parents were David and Mary Jane (Scott) Cloud. I am looking for information on William's first wife Ruth Miller, she was also born in Hardin Co. and they were married there in 1870 had a daughter Jessie Cloud in 1871, I have these records from Salt Lake. There seems to have been a second daughter Ruth Cloud born about 1872 as she is 8 years old and living with her grandfather Robert Miller in Hardin Co., in the 1880 Census. As yet I have not found Jessie or Ruth Miller Cloud, in the 1880 Census. Jessie does show up in 1882 Court records about her guardian it says her mother is dead. What I am trying to find out is when Ruth Miller Cloud died and whether or not she and William H Cloud were divorced and if so when. The reason I am trying to find out this information is because William H. Cloud married my Great Grandmother Mary Luella "Lulu" Goldsby in Chillicothe, Livingston Co., MO, Nov 1874 and then they ran away to Virginia City, NV, where my Grandfather was born in 1876. By 1878 they were in Santa Cruz, CA. but by the 1880 census he was no longer with Lulu in Santa Cruz. She is living there with her Parents and children. William is found in San Francisco and is a Lawyer. In 1886 he died in San Francisco and the obits I found there mentioned no surviving family so I checked the Santa Cruz newspapers and found his obit in the social column, which did mention that he was the son-in-law of Z.N. Goldsby but mentioned no one else. In 1907 Lulu Married Williams older brother James S. Cloud, he was 77 and she was 50. He was also a Civil War invalid this marriage didn't make any sence to me until I read a short passage in my 2nd Great grandfathers Biography. It says that James Cloud was her husband and the father of Scott and Archibald Cloud, no mention of William at all. This leads me to one conclusion which may or may not be true. From the info that I have gathered so far I tend to think that there was no divorce and that Ruth died about 1879 or 80 which would make his marriage to Lulu invalid and the reason she married James was to give her children a legal Cloud father. What I would really like to do is to change this from an assumption to fact one way or the other. I would also like to find out what happened to his two girls from his marriage to Ruth Miller and when she died. I think I am getting long winded so I will quit for now. Hope someone can be of help.
