You didn't provide a whole lot of info (like as to where she actually lived). And I am not sure how much before 1847 she could have been born, but, I went to the 1850 census and queried for Cloud's living in Hamilton County, IN. I found one Jane and no Margaret's. The info concerning Jane is as follows and was found on p.161 of Noblesville, Hamilton Cty, IN: Parents: Isom & Francis Cloud (ages 76 & 70), both born NC. Children: Jane Cloud (age 22, born IN) Isom Cloud (age 21, born IN)

Guess Ancestry.COM census is not complete...they show no Shelton in a county called Pittylvania...although they do show a Shelton in Spotsylvania, VA...Census info is contained on page 101 but I suspect this would not be the Shelton to which you refer because he has 7 children under the age of 10 and his wife would be about 45 or older. Well, I am not sure how accurate this is, but in looking thru the 1810 census I found the following: Bennett Shelton, p. 547, Hattom, Montgomery Cty, NC. Indicates he is between 26 - 44. Also, a daughter under the age of 10, and I suspect wife, between 16 - 24. He is shown in NC vice VA. 1790 and 1800 census do not show VA for some reason. Lura

Several of us who are Cloud descendants have pored over old records and documents for years in an attempt to resolve the many questions about the genealogy of the Cloud families of VA. Individually we have collected many five drawer files of materials and occasionally we get together to compare findings and search for answers to questions similar to yours. It will take some time but I will search through my files to see if they contain a bit of information which will help you. There will be a Cloud family gathering in Knoxville, TN on the 16th through the 18th of July, 2004. Research materials will be brought to the gathering and we will have the expertise of the Cloud Family Historian to guide us in making sense of what we have collected. For those of you who may be looking into this thread for Indian connections, I have found mine thanks to Raymond Dennis. I discovered that my Cloud line is not of Indian heritage. However, my gggrandfather, Joseph F. Cloud, married Nancy Cox, a Cherokee woman. Joseph and Nancy's granddaughter, Mary Frances "Fannie" Cloud is listed as an applicant on the Guion Miller Roll. I now have a copy of two applications she submitted. The last application states that she was rejected because her brother had previously applied. She would have been accepted under HIS application. His application was not rejected. I have also found her brother, Jacob Lewis "Jake" Cloud's name listed on the Guion Miller Roll. So our mystery is now solved - we DO have Cherokee ancestry, but it is through our gggrandmother, not our gggrandfather as we had previously thought.
