A Cloud DNA testing project has begun in an effort to connect various branches of the extended family tree. It is the use of new technology to tell us if we share a common ancestor and how many generations ago we may have had the same one. You may read details about the project and how you may participate by following these links <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cloud/dna/> or <mykindred.com/cloud/dna/>. If Michael's or Charles' DNA should match the DNA of another Cloud male outside your immediate family, this would provide a vital clue as to where you should focus your genealogy research. Tom, I have a book with the title Handy Book for Genealogists which provides a brief history of each state, some Genealogical Society addresses in those states, and a detailed description of when counties were formed and from which counties each was formed when they were divided. It also includes a state map showing each county. The only state which describes its map as one with parishes is Louisiana. With respect to South Carolina it states: "SC entered the Union in 1788 as the eighth state. More than a hundred years before, in 1683, the first three counties, Berkeley, Colleton, and Craven, were established. All were discontinued, and the present Berkeley county is not the original." It further states that "By an act ratified in 1769 the province of SC was divided into seven judicial districts: Charleston, Georgetown, Beaufort, Orangeburg, Ninety-Six, Camden and Cheraws." In 1795 two other districts were formed. In 1798 the nine districts were subdivided into 24 districts. Others were formed later. The text then describes a total of 40 districts showing the date each was formed. The text does not describe when the district name was changed to "county", but each county is listed alphabetically showing the district or county from which it derived. Hope this helps. Tom -- I have a rough map of S. Carolina in 1770, which shows divisions by parish. Whether the parishes had political status I don't know. It was in 1719 that the proprietors relinquished their rights in Carolina. An earlier map refers to "proprietary counties." Maybe after proprietary rule, S. Carolina went to a parish system.
