    1. [Clooz] Clooz Newsletter 8/23/00

    3. There’s plenty of news from Ancestor Detective, LLC for you in this Clooz Newsletter. I hope that everyone is having a wonderful summer and that you’ve been able to spend some time outside–instead of just in front of the computer organizing your files! I’ve been taking time here and there to literally smell the roses (I have 32 rose bushes!). But I’ve also been busy working on Clooz and Clooz-related products and issues. New Print Clooz User’s Manual Available After receiving many requests for a printed manual, I succumbed to the pressure and had the manual printed. It’s identical to the manual that comes on the Clooz CD or that you can download from my Web site. The manual is 104 pages, has better images of the reports, and is handy for those who like to have a physical manual to hold while they’re learning a program. The manual cover reflects the new look for Clooz that will be incorporated into the next run of CDs as well as my new Web site (discussed below). The cover was designed by my brother and webmaster, Scott Kelley, of Lightspeed Networks. The manual sells separately for $14.95 plus shipping and can be ordered directly from the Ancestore at <http://www.ancestordetective.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=A&Product_Code=manual&Category_Code=Software>. New Clooz Web Site With this newsletter I am announcing the opening of the new Clooz Web site at <http://www.clooz.com>. Scott’s been very busy designing the site, making it more accessible and user friendly. Please take a look. We’re not completely finished with the design makeover from the Ancestor Detective site, but we’re almost there. There will soon be a redirect in place from the old Clooz site to the new Clooz site, in case you go to the old address. Clooz Version 1.22 Patch Available for Download A version 1.22 patch is now available for download from the new Clooz Web site at <http://www.clooz.com/download>. The patch has three items that were fixed in it: * The All Sources report now works properly. * The Personal File ID number field was enlarged on all reports so long ID numbers will appear on the reports. * The Photo report puts linked people in alphabetical order. When you go to download the patch, you’ll find that you need to contact me for a serial number. I’ve finally incorporated serial numbers into Clooz and current users will have to send an e-mail to [email protected] in order to receive the serial number required for installation of the patch. When you send the e-mail, please be sure to give me your name, address, and the version of Clooz you are installing (i.e. stand-alone, Access 97, or Access 2000). I’ll write back with your serial number. I expect I’ll be deluged with serial number requests in the next week, so please be patient with me as I try to answer everyone. One of the main reasons I’ve incorporated serial numbers at this time is because I’ve finally got a Clooz Demo available (see below). The serial number allows us to ensure that only registered users of the program are downloading the patch. So, if you haven’t sent in your registration card, you’ll need to do that before requesting the serial number from me. When I get your e-mail, I’ll check my database to see if you’re registered or not. If you are, you’ll get a serial number; if you aren’t, I’ll ask you to send in the registration card you received with Clooz. If you no longer have the registration card, I’ll need to see a copy of the receipt that states you purchased Clooz. You can mail or fax the receipt to me, but registration cards must be mailed in. Eventually I hope to institute online registration, but I’m not there yet. New Downloadable Clooz User’s Manual Available There is a new version of the Clooz User’s Manual Available for download from <http://www.clooz.com/pub/manual.exe>. This manual is identical to the new printed version, and has better navigational tools in it and the reports are now readable. Clooz Demo Now Available After many requests, I have finally managed to put together a Clooz Demo that is available for download from <http://www.clooz.com/pubs/demosetup.exe>. The Clooz Demo is the full program, but has a limitation of entering only 50 people and excluding imports. Those interested in trying the program before buying it can download the demo and take it for a test drive. In order to go beyond 50 people, or to import people, prospective users will have to purchase the full version. A word of caution–the demo download is 12 MB. I couldn’t get it smaller than that. FGS Conference I’ll be vending at the Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference in Salt Lake City, which starts two weeks from today. Please stop by booth 128 and say hi. While you’re there, you’ll be able to learn about a new project I’ve been working on. I’m signed up to give a Clooz demo before the sessions begin on Saturday, 9 September. Ireland Again this year I’m one of the co-directors of the National Genealogical Society-sponsored Research Trip to Dublin. I’m leaving for Ireland on 18 September and won’t return home until 13 October! After the work is done, I’ll be touring around the country a bit. While I’m in Ireland, I’ll be checking my e-mail frequently, as I did last year. So technical support will continue. My husband has agreed to fill orders received for part of the time I’m gone, but he’ll be joining me in Ireland, so Ancestor Detective will be closed 2-15 October. Genealogical Computing If you haven’t seen the new GC yet, you’re missing help and advice from some great authors in the field of genealogy and technology. For those that don’t know, I’m the managing editor of GC, and am working on my fourth issue. We’ve received a lot of compliments on the new look and the articles. If you’d like to subscribe, go to Ancestry.com’s Web site at <http://www.ancestry.com>. I’m writing a column also on Ancestry.com called “GC Extra,” where I explore issues of technology and genealogy. The column is posted every Thursday. In tomorrow’s column, I discuss accessories for laptop users on the road. Visit GC Extra at <http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/columns/extra/extra.asp> That’s all for now! Keep organizing but don’t forget to smell the roses!
