I use the marriage date of my direct ancestors because that is the date that most matters to me. For instance, my 3rd great grandfather had two wives; his 2nd wife was my ancestor, so I use their marriage date. If I don't know my progenitors' marriage date, then I use a circa date or the date of the first marriage. In the case of aunts, uncles or cousins with multiple marriages, I usually use the first marriage date, if known.
