Not true. There are at least 2 free options for creating PDF files. There is a digital printing company in the U.K. offering free (legitimate) downloads of the 5D PDF creator software. Optionally you can have them ship you a CD of the software. You'll have to register with them, but you will not be subjected to any kind of followup sales pitches or spam. You'll find the company, known as CtrlP.com at http://www.ctrlp.com. The download is fairly large at 5.66MB, so the CD option may be the ticket if you have a slow modem. The second option is to obtain the free Ghostview program (available at many web sites, including www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/aladdin/get550.html). Ghostview takes a a file printed to Postscript and converts it to a .pdf file. Creating a .pdf file by this method first requires that you install a Postscript printer driver on your computer. (Use the Add Printer command in the Printers folder and select one of the Postscript printers: Apple, HP, QMS, or any other brand, it does not matter which. Other printer drivers are available for download on the web, including Adobe's excellent AdobePS printer driver, which is also free and is the one I have used.). Configure the printer driver so that the Postscript output is saved to a file. When you want to create your .pdf file, first "print" it to a file through the Postscript printer you have set up and then run Ghostview and open the Postscript file in it and then, finally, output it to .pdf. Using the 5D program, obviously, is much less involved and is the one I would recommend, as long as CtrlP makes it available w/o a licensing fee.
