John, I am getting ready to leave town and can not take the time to look up the exact rule-of-thumb on genealogical research and the census, but I think that the recommended practice used by the "gurus" of genealogical research is to list 15 households before and 15 households after the person that you are researching. This gives you the opportunity to spot kinfolks who may have moved to the same area as the person that you are researching or that you later discover are the parents of a spouse of one of your ancestors, etc. etc. I have found this practice to be useful, but I usually do more than 15 each way.
