Mike, Sure, you can select multiple people at the same time without having to go back and select the link button. Just double-click each person you what associated with that document. It won't show who you've selected in the people screen but when you go back to your document, they will all be listed there. While I like many things about Clooz, the reports are very limited. Thus far I'm only using the documents, but I have been able to go into Access and develop a Query using several of the tables. By doing this I have been able to develop a report that gives me the PRN and report name, and some other items that I wanted. Since I'm using TMG (The Master Genealogist) I don't want to duplicate efforts, and thus I put the bare minimum amount of info into Clooz. I can do my research in TMG, but am using Clooz for what it is advertised as--an electronic filing system. Once I developed an Access query table that includes the items I want, I also discovered that I can instantly find an item (even if it's only one word in a source title) by using the Access binoculars. When linking people, I find it quicker to double click the person rather than use the link button each time. This goes much quicker when doing multiple people. Now I really need help. Today I archived for the first time. Luckily I only had a few documents in my database. I say luckily because now I can't find any of my people or my documents! I went into select database and selected the one with todays date, but it is empty - so is my other database. I do wonder where my data went! Any suggestions? Thanks! Terri
HELP!! Could someone please explain to me how to move an archived file to my laptop. The manual says to put it on a floppy then onto the laptop hard drive, rename, and open in Clooz. I can put it on a floppy and then onto my laptop hard drive, but then I don't know how to open it in Clooz!! I already have an existing database with my imported people on my laptop, but no documents yet. If someone could please walk me through the steps I would be forever grateful. Thank you. Terri
When linking people to a document, is there a way to select multiple people at one time without having to select each individually and pushing the link button? If not, it sure would be nice to be able to make multiple selections using the CTRL or SHIFT keys when clicking with the Mouse in some future version. For a document where you have many people (such as a family bible), it takes a long time to link them individually, even though there names tend to be all together. Thanks, Mike Dickson
Open Explorer, Tools, Find, for name of file type in *.mdb. This will result in a list of databases on your drive. Simply highlight the one you want to remove and press delete. Re: Access You can open Explorer and do a Find and enter *.mdb. This should find the database you are looking for then you can do the query you want to, but it sorta negates the reason to use Clooz. I think Clooz needs to give users a bit more options when creating reports. We need more "if, then... Although I find that the reports in Clooz help to centralize things such as census reports for use in the library and such. > -----Original Message----- > From: Karen Chappell [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: Friday, August 04, 2000 11:13 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [Clooz] Beginner's Questions > > > List, > > Partial Answer to Ron's Questions > > 1. Liz & Karen, Thanks for the prompt replies! Now I can continue planning a numbering and filing system that fits within Clooz's parameters. However, the point I was trying to make in Question 3 is, is there a way to make "multiple selections" for a report as is implied in the manual? I take it the answer is "no" if you are using the stand-alone version of Clooz.. In regards to the manual, I would like to compliment those who developed and designed the layout. I found the content easy to read because of all the open space and illustrations. The manual is well worth the time and material to print out a copy. It sits right next to my computer as I plan and work with Clooz. I'm looking forward to getting started and I appreciate the tips and ideas I see on this list. Ron Adams
Ron, I have not experimented with Clooz enough to see if you can make multiple selections. I did open my regular ACC ESS program to see how it works with the Clues Database. In Access, I opened a blank new database. A dialog box opened and I gave the new Database a name. Then under File, I chose Get External Data and then import. Then I highlighted the name of my Database in the standalone Clooz. It imported all the tables from the stand alone Clooz. The only problem with this is that the Clooz template has many tables built, but there are no queries, forms or reports built. With the report function in ACCESS you can create reports with as many "multiple selections" as you want. The only problem is that you have to know how to use ACCESS. There is a Report Wizard which can help you create the type of report that you want. I will read up on the Clooz Manual somemore to see if there is an easier way to make "multiple selections." Since the name may be city in one template and parish in another template, I've named them Place 1, etc. You don't have a choice where your data goes, but if you need to edit it, look for the information in these lists. >Question #3 - I have only been able to pick one criteria for selecting a >report. List, Partial Answer to Ron's Questions 1. What IS the maximum number of characters that will print on reports? I experimented with this a bit. It seems like 13 is the maximum number of characters that are available to be viewed when you open the Census form to see your list of Census databases. It will take more characters than that. However, it would not be convenient because they wouldn't be easily viewable. The reports will show a few more characters than that, say 17. However you still have the problem of the census file #'s not being completely viewable in the census form. 2.. Why are there five Place Lists (Place 1, Place 2, etc) on the Edit >Dropdown List? I find that the Cities, Counties, States and Country and Township are more useful for my purposes of researching in the United States. I believe that the other five places are designed to be used for places that have different names such as Province, Parish, etc. In that case before you enter your data you should pick one naming scheme and stick with it. For instance, Place 1 = city, Place 2 = Province, Place 3 = Parish, etc. There probably are better suited to meet the needs of people researching outside the United States. Although, I am tempted to try Place #1 for Hospital names. Place #2 for Cemetery Names and Place #3 for church names. I am currently putting that info in my notes in my main genealogy program. Question #3 - I have only been able to pick one criteria for selecting a report. A search of a certain suname, then I get a report of that surname and it is sorted by location. All the Florida's together and all the Tennessee s together. I believe that if someone were very experienced with Access, they could tell you how to make a query to make multiple selection criteria. I will leave the indexing question to someone else, I haven't tried it Karen -----Original Message----- From: Ron Adams <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Friday, August 04, 2000 4:13 AM Subject: [Clooz] Beginner's Questions >List Members > >I'm new to Clooz. I would certainly do it in Clooz. If you do want to keep unrelated people separate, you can create more than one Clooz database. I don't care if all the folks in my Clooz database are related, because many of my ancestors travelled with groups of people who may or may not have been related. If I can't find the ancestors' records, maybe I can trace their neighbors'. Clooz doesn't know or care if the persons you enter are related. I have folks in Clooz that aren't and may never be in my genealogy software. It still gives me ideas on where to look for possible records, though, if neighbors who came from the same place at about the same time have better indicators of just where that place is. (Eg, many of my ancestors came from Posen, Prussia, which is a state now in Poland. Getting a town or even a county makes a search possible that just saying "Posen" doesn't.) I do try not to assume that an unknown "Henry Smith" is the same Henry Smith I'm looking for, so I may have more than one Henry Smith forn about the same time in the same state. If they turn out to be the same person by further research, I'll put them together at that time. >>> Patricia Tidmarsh <[email protected]> 08/04/00 12:30PM >>> Another thing that puzzles me. I want search all the people in a small township and keep a record of the census. In other words make a of the censuses for 1850, 1860 and 1870 for a group of families Can I do this in Clooz? Or more practical to make a separate database, putting only people I am sure are related in the base?
