Hi, I am a new to Clooz and am having a problem importing my database. I've followed the instructions to the letter but keep getting the import unsuccessful. My gen program is Family Origins. I would like to know what I need to do and possibly what characters Clooz doesn't recognize for import. Thanks, Janet Johnson
Regarding entry of two events from one page, I ran across this myself a while back. I think you are fine with the first entry, but you might call the second entry CHURCH001a and then you will be able to enter it and still refer to that page. I don't think calling it 'correspondence' will have any benefit over what you have now. Len
Hi there- I am new to Clooz... I have a question regarding the best way to handle a document that contains more than one event for several different people in my database. Specifically, the archivist of a church I wrote to sent back a letter with two events transcribed from their original records for me. She did not include copies of the original documents as she mentioned the original church records were in fragile condition, so she transcribed them for me instead. They are: a record of a funeral for the head of the family I am researching and a record of his son's Confirmation. I input the information as a document, calling it CHURCH001. I listed the event as "funeral" and linked the father to the event, but when I tried to add the other event, using the same document #, I was not able to reuse it (so I guess I learned that there is only one event allowed for each document #). I did note in the remarks that I was working from a transcribed copy, rather than a copy of the original church record. Would I have been better off to list this as "Correspondence" rather than a church record? I really need some advice about how to handle this type of situation. I know that this issue will come up again when I start working with my parish record entries. Sometimes there are numerous people that I am researching all clumped together on a page or two with baptisms, marriages and burials all intermingled. How is this type of record handled best in Clooz? Thank you! Lori

Cummings There's no way to merge in Clooz. What you can do is open the document that has the now wrong person in it. Link the correct person. Then open the wrong person's detail screen and close it. Then open the correct person's detail form and say yes to copy the data from the previous person. This doesn't copy all of the data, but it will copy a significant portion. Then you'll need to fill in the rest of the information. What do you do to merge People records when you later find out that you have two ID numbers that are for the same individual? ie. different given names on multi years of census entries. Thanks R.D. Cummings
It sounds as though you are shopping for a genealogy program. Have you seen Legacy? you can download a demo at www.legacyfamilytree.com . It is a great program, easy to use at a basic level with lots of room for growth as you progress. Sandra
When I first used Clooz, I had a problem too, and got the same message. It turned out that some of my names included a nickname in quotes. Clooz reads the quotes as commas and gets confused. This might be the first thing to check, Sandra
I have purchased Clooz, and have converted my genealogy export to the proper format. I have saved the export in text format and gave it the name "cloozimp". It is in the same folder as the Clooz program files. It has the (one) .txt file extension. After several attempts to import this data, unsuccessfully, I uninstalled Clooz and removed the cloozimp file. I reinstalled Clooz, recreated the export and import file. Consistently, when I attempt the import, the following message appears: "Import function was not successful". While obvious, this message gives me no "clooz" what to try next. Anyone have a suggestion?

Anyone have a suggestion? Yes, I can help you. Some people are getting this very unhelpful message and I haven't yet figured out why as their files appear to be fine. The solution at this point is to e-mail me the cloozimp.txt file and I'll either tell you what's wrong with it or I'll import it for you and send you the database. Send the cloozimp.txt file as an attachment to [email protected] That address handles text attachments better than my usual address. Thanks so much for the responses to my rather long message last evening. I have learned a few things since then. One is that there are three programs that I need to check out. I have a PC so the Mac issue is of no concern to me, but it might be decisive for others like Shirley Jordan. Does anyone have an opinion on this issue? The programs: 1st is Bygones, which has pretty good reviews and some happy users. I have received some great personal testimonies. I have played with it a little and the Manual looks good though still evolving. It is freeware as of right now. It was designed by someone who apparently knows a great deal about genealogical research or at least has help from such experts. Strong praise from happy users. The 2nd is Clooz. It has great reviews and was designed by a world class Genealogist, but I have had no personal testimonies. Apparently the User Manual was completely redone by a user. It runs on Access 2000 which I like. I have looked at the Manual but have not seen the actual software. Will have to buy to test drive it I think. Does anyone use this program regularly. http://www.ancestordetective.com/clooz.htm The 3rd is Family Matters. It is built on Access also, but does not yet run on Access 2000. It does run on Access 97 and earlier versions however. It is shareware and can be test driven without buying but pay later if you like. It seems to combine the features of a standard lineage-based or full-featured genealogical program like FTM and the "note-taking" and research organization features of Bygones and Clooz. I know little about it, but the author is very responsive and is continueing to improve his product. http://www.matterware.com/index.html I will be testing these three products over the next week or so and then I will select one to stick with. The last thing I need now is another "full-featured" genealogy program so I am a little leary of Family Matters, though it would be great if the feartures of Master Genealogist or FTM could be combined with the features of Bygones and Clues. Perhaps the Impossible Possibility at this point in time, but I will look at Family Matters. If there are any happy users out there, I would love to hear from you. I already have FTM and Master Genealogist. What I need is the organization, retrieval, and analysis features of Bygones and Clooz and perhaps of Family Matters. Any comments or help will be appreciated

Hi, I know a lot of you have been asking how to get your Sources into Clooz without having to type them in. Ok, here's the scoop on how I did just that. The bad news is that it's a lot of work. The good news is that it works. But here's my disclaimer: "Kids, don't try this at home." No kidding, I just played around with this and got it to work - doesn't mean it will work for you. AND, you need to know how to play around with WORD tables. AND, I'm using the Access version. Don't know if the plain version uses Access tables. AND it takes a few hours if you have a lot of sources to review. But if you do have a lot, you don't want to type them in, right?. If you read a few lines and feel lost, this isn't for you. Virginia [email protected] - ------------------------------------------------- Remember, I said it was tricky (and maybe dangerous), but it worked for me. I tried it on a Test database first, just in case. Don't call Liz, since I'm sure she doesn't sanction this (but maybe she will add an easier way to do this, when she sees how desperate some of us are). So here goes: -Get your source data out of your genealogy program or wherever and into a WORD doc file, preferably with tabs between fields (less work than commas, cause you want to keep the commas that appear within your data). I ran a Source Report in Generations (Reunion). -Look at your data and make sure that the columns of similar data will line up, adding extra tabs for blank fields, etc. Don't worry about what the columns are right now. Just get them lined up. -Select the data and click on Table, Convert Text to Table. If you get too many columns or too much data is in the wrong column, reverse it by clicking on Table Select Table, then Table Convert Table to Text. I think it's easier to fix it when not in a table. Go back and forth between Text and Table until all your data lines up. -Open your database in Access and open tblTitle. Copy the header row and paste it into your WORD document at the top, but not in your source data table. -Add a header row to your source data table, and name your columns with similar names to what is in the tblTitle header. (Loc is the city and state of the publisher and Address is the address of the Repository. I think all the other headers are clear, except RepositoryID, which we will get to.) -Move your data columns around until they are in the same order as the tblTitle header, adding blank columns where necessary. (Use WORD Help for Tables, if you don't know how to do this.) -Sort your table by Repository (hoId the cursor over the top of the Repository column until it changes into a down arrow and click. Select Table Sort) I don't know this for sure, but I think you have to have something in this column. Clooz has 'Not Available' in this field when you first enter a source in Clooz, so add 'Not Available' (no quotes) to any blank Repository fields. -Go back to Access and open tblRepository. You will see two columns, one is RepositoryID and the other is Repository. Note the repositories that you have already entered into Clooz. Look at your source data table and if you find any repositories that match those in Clooz, enter that RepositoryID into your source data table in the RepositoryID field. Make sure that the spelling and punctuation are exactly the same as what you see in tblRepository. -Note the highest RepositoryID in tblRepository. Start numbering your data table by assigning the next higher number to one of your new repositories. For example, if tblRepository goes from 0 to 10, then assign 11 to one of your repositories that is not in tblRepository. Every occurrence of that same repository should get this same number. -Now create a new table (in this same file) that consists of two columns, RepositoryID and Repository, by copying those columns from your data table. Sort this repository table by RepositoryID. Remove any rows that have repositories that are already in Clooz and remove any duplicate rows. There should be one row for each NEW repository (from the previous example, those starting with 11) and only one row for each RepositoryID. -Copy the data from this repository table you have created, and paste it into tblRepository right after the highest number (where it says Autonum). -Now remove the header row from your source data table, copy the data and paste it into tblTitle. -THAT'S ALL THERE IS TO IT. (ha, ha) -If you get an error when pasting into these tbl's, Access will give you a nasty message and create a table called Error something or other. Fix your mistake, take note of any rows that did get added and adjust your data accordingly. You can delete this Error table. I got this the first time I tried to paste my sources, because I didn't know that tblRepository had to contain the numbers first. -GOOD LUCK
When I try to do a report on all sources, I get this message "The specified field 'Repository' could refer to more than one table listed in the FROM clause of your SQL statement." I have looked at all the tables in Access and I don't see any other field called 'Repository'. Any idea what this is? Virginia [email protected]

Hi Lillian. How about sharing some of your queries, for those of us who are not too Access savvy? I think you would find a lot of greatful people!! Regards, Virginia [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, August 06, 2000 10:39 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Clooz] Re: Clooz reports While I like many things about Clooz, the reports are very limited. Thus far I'm only using the documents, but I have been able to go into Access and develop a Query using several of the tables. By doing this I have been able to develop a report that gives me the PRN and report name, and some other items that I wanted. Since I'm using TMG (The Master Genealogist) I don't want to duplicate efforts, and thus I put the bare minimum amount of info into Clooz. I can do my research in TMG, but am using Clooz for what it is advertised as--an electronic filing system. Once I developed an Access query table that includes the items I want, I also discovered that I can instantly find an item (even if it's only one word in a source title) by using the Access binoculars. If you're using version 1.2 and haven't yet downloaded the patch, you need to (it's at http://www.ancestordetective.com/patch.htm). The archive function was fixed in that version. If you're using version 1.21, then e-mail me privately and I'll work with you on finding out what's wrong. You can tell which version of Clooz you have by clicking on Help/About Clooz. Clooz doesn't delete databases or entries from your database unless you tell it to. There is no capability within the program for doing this without your direction.
