    2. Pat, I also use Family Tree Maker, but I'm not clear on what you mean by FORMS. When I uploaded my names into Clooz, I didn't include everyone. I only included people from my parents back to get me started. As I needed to add anyone else, I just use the Personal ID from my FTM file and put that number on any new person I added to Clooz in the Alt ID. When I set up clooz the first time, I had to work out the bugs, just like anyone else. I started out the way the Manual stated and didn't like the way it duplicated info on the main sheets. That is when I started playing with a couple of people to get it the way I wanted it. It took time, but I feel that I now have it the way I want it. As far as dates, I'm not sure if you mean the birth, marriage, death dates or not. Once I uploaded all of my people, it uploaded the dates from my FTM file. These dates only show up on the PEOPLE list. When you enter the Documents, the first page will list the date of the document that you enter when you assign it a PERSONAL FILE #. I will tell you that in entering my documents, as I attached the people, I found mistakes in my FTM file. I haven't changed my FTM file at all. When I get thru entering my papers into CLOOZ, I will print out all of these reports and CONFIRM the data and at that time, I will change any problems in FTM. Clooz, sure has helped me find these errors easier than going thru my FTM file. If I haven't answered your problem, send me more info and I will try to help you figure out the process in changing your Clooz file. I will tell you that there isn't an easy way, at least none that I have found. What I do is cut & paste the document info that I put in the Remarks area, but then I use the document to enter all of the info above on the additional people that I attach to that document. You can change the PERSONAL # name without any cutting and pasting. You would go to the Clooz Document screen and double click on the one that you want and then on the Document screen, you can change it to what you want, and then attach the people that you want. I know this sound like alot of work, but it doesn't take as long as you might think. I hope I haven't been too wordy and I hope you understand what I am trying to say, but if not, feel free to let me know and I will help in anyway I can. Cathy

    3. Good idea, and one I may use on DBs, especially at work. BUT, how do you suggest changing a 3000+ database, such as Family Tree Maker, where you only have access to forms, and would have to change one to three+ dates per form. Oh, for the ability to make such into a datasheet! 3. Cathy, I like your system of filing Clooz documents. It appears like it would really save time when you needed to find a document. How do you handle documents that are pertinent to several of your people, like a family Bible record or note that lists several people's birth dates or marriages? 2. Jack, When I type in any document, I type it in as a single document and attach each of the persons in the document and in the ROLE area, I list them as, "witness", "father", "mother", "brother", "sister". Example: On a marriage record, I would type in the Remarks, all of the info on the document and put a check mark in the Primary box only for the Husband & Wife. Then I attach the Witness' and list "WITNESS" in the Role box, not showing them as Primary people and not entering the info in the Remarks area. I also do not add the Minister, etc in my database. On a Bible, I would probably enter on the Parents names, All of the info in the Rmarks area, again checking the Primary box. Then I would attach all of the people in the Bible and mark them All as Primary people. In the Role area I might enter CHILD. I haven't entered any Bible info yet, but might try that tonight, just to see if I would make any other changes. I hope this helps you. Cathy

    2. Jerry, I use this system to enter my DOCUMENTS so that when my main Documents screen comes up, I can find my info directly from the main Document screen. I found that the Manual example duplicates information on that screen. Manual example on page 50 Personal File # Event + Birth 001 Birth 1956 Birth 005 Birth 1924 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Mine looks like this: BirMIN001 Thomas Minshall birth 1850 BirKLE001 John Klenk birth 1850 This tells me that these are Birth records for the Minshall or Klenk families and the person whos birth it is on the document. CemSpG001 Elizabeth Goodrich death 1916 CemStJ001 Joseph Minshall death 1954 This tells me that the Cemetery is Spring Grove or Cemetery is St. Joseph and the Event field shows me who is buried there and the death date) Again it has the Cemetery's sorted on my main Document screen. DeaCertMIN001 Fred Minshall 1949 DeaCertKLE001 John Klenk 1901 Tells me that these are Death Certificates for either the Minshall or Klenk families. ChBapMIN001 Fred Minshall 1878 ChMarMin001 Sophia Minshall 1900 ChBapKLE001 John Klenk 1888 Again this sorts on the main Document screen that these are Church Baptism or Marriage records for either the Minshall or Klenk family and the people that are the main person on the record and the date of the event. NewsMIN001 Sophia Minshall death 1969 NewsKle001 John Klenk death 1901 NewsKle002 John Klenk marriage 1870 This will tell me that it is a newspaper article on Sophia or John's death and John's marriage with the year of the event. WillMIN001 Sophia Minshall will 1968 WillKLE001 John Klenk, Jr will 1959 This will tell me that these are wills for the Minshall or Klenk family and the event col. tells me the person who's will it is. ShpKLE001 Passenger list ShpBRA001 Passenger list This will tell me that these are Passenger list for the Klenk or Brausch families. I found that listing Birth in both the Personal File # and in the Event field duplicates the same info. I wanted to list in the Event field the name of the person, that way I could quickly find the individual I wanted without having to look at the book where I stored my original document or at the entered data unless I needed more information When I started entering my data I followed the Manual, but decided to change it to help me find my info quicker, maybe in 10 seconds :) I hope that this is helpful. 3. Jerry I am a new user of Clooz, but have put in about 150 records so far. This is what I am using, seems to work well for me. Under documents: Birth 001 Birth 002 etc. I made my births into 3 area, the Birth 001 are the real birth certificated, then I made two other sections. This way I know which one's I have received the actual birth documents. Birth Announcement 001 Birth Index 001 Baptism 001 Baptism 002 etc. Death 001 Death 002 etc. You need to put a name before the numbers, the program will not take just a number. On the census I did as the creator of the program suggested. KS 001 for Kansas KS 002 MN 001 for Minnesota MN 002 under the directories, Dir 001 Dir 002 etc I am not going to use the photo section, at least not for now, as I already have a system set up for the pictures. I hope this helps a little Regards, Judy _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. 3. Another thought on the census. I am using Clooz to records what documents I have used for my family. I use a 2nd data base for the pending sources. In my way of thinking all the households on the same page or two (6 or 15 families), is just pending. The only time I put "non members" from a census form is when they are listed with my family. boarder, loader, etc.. 1. [Clooz] Entering other families from census records
    2. Niesen
    3. My thoughts: Do, at the very least, the other families with surnames that keep reappearing in the different places they live; that's what I do. Or, alternately, do 3-6 houses before after. That's usually where the majority of closer relatives will be in my experience. BUT, when you enter the data for those other families, don't bother to list all the data, just the basics like name, gender and age of each person. That will save a lot of work, and you will still be getting the cross-matching capability. I have an awful lot of census copies, and I think I'd go mad if I entered all the people. I don't know about you, but it takes me quite long enough just to enter my own people. Len

    3. Yes...it does sound a god idea to enter as many as feel right about from the census page. I could almost see going back one page either direction to make sure. John -----Original Message----- From: Kathy Bovenschen [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, September 28, 2000 3:17 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Clooz] RE:census records While Franklin suggested 15 households before and after the subject of interest, I have seen 6 mentioned as the magic number. In either case I could find myself entering an entire township based on the number of relatives I have in one locale! Therefore, I judge each on a case-by-case basis. As a data entry shortcut you could enter only the names of heads of household along with their page and line #'s. That would show everyone in the proper physical order on the report without adding all the details for neighbors. If you find that a person turns out to be related, at that point you can fill in the details and add the rest of the household members. It's a good idea to list these neighbors in your Clooz census forms. Even if they are not related their names may surface again as namesakes, godparents, witnesses to wills or marriages, sponsors of baptisms, etc. I have several obituaries in a scrapbook made by my great grandmother. One, for a woman named Julia, was a complete my! stery until I found her listed as a neighbor in the 1920 census. She's not related, but it was nice to finally determine how these two women came to know one another. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Steiger" <[email protected]> Subject: [Clooz] census records > When entering census information is it best to enter everyone on the page, > including those that you are not following? or just the family members? 3. John, I am getting ready to leave town and can not take the time to look up the exact rule-of-thumb on genealogical research and the census, but I think that the recommended practice used by the "gurus" of genealogical research is to list 15 households before and 15 households after the person that you are researching. This gives you the opportunity to spot kinfolks who may have moved to the same area as the person that you are researching or that you later discover are the parents of a spouse of one of your ancestors, etc. etc. I have found this practice to be useful, but I usually do more than 15 each way.
