Ruth I agree, I think we all would benefit all of us with the answers, some of us are shy in asking, or never thought of that question. So please give your answers to the list. For those new to the list or who have just recently purchased the CLOOZ program. I have never purchased a software program in which I have received such excellent and timely answers to my requests for assistance. Liz does an outstanding job of keeping us informed of program updates and helping everyone with their questions. THANKS Liz!!! I'm waiting for a response about tricks to recording negative findings. Is it possible someone responded directly to Debra and not to the list? The info you enter in the "people" screen is merely to remind oneself of the specific person, maybe among those of similar names. Put whatever marriage date does that for you. You are NOT establishing spousal relationships in Clooz, that is the function of your main genealogy data base. > >[email protected] wrote: > > > >I have an ancestor with three marriages; on the >first page where you > record >the #, surname, given name, birth, marriage and >death dates, which > date is to >be recorded? You need to have six fields in your exported file. Since you are unable to include the marriage year field you'll have to use a "NULL" field, which is represented by a comma, between the BirthYear and DeathYear fields. So, your headings would appear as: PersonalID,Surname,Given,BirthYear,,DeathYear. Note the additional comma between BirthYear and DeathYear. Don't forget to insert the NULL indicator in every record of your export. Perhaps the easiest way do this would be to open your .csv file in Excel, insert a new column between the BirthYear/DeathYear columns and use the autofill feature to populate those cells with a comma, then save the .csv file and import that into Clooz. Hope this helps, Bryan Logan **************************** * [email protected] * ****************************
I use the marriage date of my direct ancestors because that is the date that most matters to me. For instance, my 3rd great grandfather had two wives; his 2nd wife was my ancestor, so I use their marriage date. If I don't know my progenitors' marriage date, then I use a circa date or the date of the first marriage. In the case of aunts, uncles or cousins with multiple marriages, I usually use the first marriage date, if known. Page 25 of the Manual says the headings should be: PersonID,Surname,Given,BirthYear,DeathYear You have "PersonalID", which won't work. Also, the error message is very helpful. You need to look at the ID number that it gives you and somewhere in that line or one immediately adjacent to it, you have too many or too few commas. You must have the same amount of commas in every line, and the number needs to equal the number of commas in the first row with the field names. This is a very helpful error message as it points you right to the line with the problem. I'm sorry you have had trouble reaching me. Having recently purchased Clooz, I am not familiar with all its terminology. I have not been able to import my list of people from The Master Genealogist and have sent tech support two emails, over a two week time, and have had no response from them. How does one get support? Or, is this the full extent of it? I was successful in exporting out of TMG into an excel sheet using the comma delimited File Type. I then made what I thought were the correct headings ie: PersonalID,Surname,Given,BirthYear,DeathYear. (TMG has not marriage year export). It will not import--tells me my ID # are not numerical after 563--I have checked, rechecked all 2217 of them and they all appear the same as the first 562. Then it spouts another error message. Thanks to everyone for the effort, but this may not be possible. After I have removed all multiple spaces, so that the document contains only single spaces, then if I replace the single spaces with comas, I get comas between first given and second given names, and also comas between the day-month-year fields. Incidentally, FYI, under the "find & replace" tab, there is another choice - "more" which reveals the "format" & "special" buttons, with drop down menues. Under "special" there is a choice for "white space" which finds all blank spaces and in one operation allows the replacement of all "white space" with - what ever you choose - in my case, just one space. Pretty neat - I've learned a lot today, but unfortunately, not enough. :( Will have to try to get a different format out of one of the three versions of PAF that I have. Thanks for the try Jerry. WORD 6.0 & 7.0 work the same way for "find & replace". But many problems. If I find a blank space, and replace with , that will also replace blank spaces between 1st & 2nd names, as well as between dates i.e., day, month, year. At the end of name fields, sometimes there are no spaces, sometimes 2-20 spaces depending on length of names, in case of 20 spaces between end of given name and birth date, you get about 20 commas instead of 20 spaces. Maybe I've missed something. It would be nice if PAF 2.2 would allow me to add punctuation to those special reports / lists. If anybody has any other thoughts - I'd appreciate hearing from you. Not true. There are at least 2 free options for creating PDF files. There is a digital printing company in the U.K. offering free (legitimate) downloads of the 5D PDF creator software. Optionally you can have them ship you a CD of the software. You'll have to register with them, but you will not be subjected to any kind of followup sales pitches or spam. You'll find the company, known as CtrlP.com at http://www.ctrlp.com. The download is fairly large at 5.66MB, so the CD option may be the ticket if you have a slow modem. The second option is to obtain the free Ghostview program (available at many web sites, including www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/aladdin/get550.html). Ghostview takes a a file printed to Postscript and converts it to a .pdf file. Creating a .pdf file by this method first requires that you install a Postscript printer driver on your computer. (Use the Add Printer command in the Printers folder and select one of the Postscript printers: Apple, HP, QMS, or any other brand, it does not matter which. Other printer drivers are available for download on the web, including Adobe's excellent AdobePS printer driver, which is also free and is the one I have used.). Configure the printer driver so that the Postscript output is saved to a file. When you want to create your .pdf file, first "print" it to a file through the Postscript printer you have set up and then run Ghostview and open the Postscript file in it and then, finally, output it to .pdf. Using the 5D program, obviously, is much less involved and is the one I would recommend, as long as CtrlP makes it available w/o a licensing fee. Hope this helps, Bryan Logan **************************** * [email protected] * ****************************
Fawn, the only way you can export a file to PDF is if you have the full Adobe Acrobat product. You just change your printer to "Adobe PDF Writer" and anything you print will become a pdf file. I own the product and it has been a great help to me. Ruth Fawn Masalewicz wrote: > 1. I would like to be able to export a report to a PDF file. Jim, I'm not sure about Word 6.0 as I use 7.0 but, go to edit, replace, where it asks "find what", put your cursor in the box and just hit the space bar. Then in the box below, it asks "replace with", put your cursor in the box and put , in the box. Then click the button "replace all". It should replace all the spaces with comas. I use PAF and that is how I did it when I imported my names to Clooz. This is assuming Word 6.0 works the same or similar to 7.0. I'm a new user and have found the program great. But wondering how one would use it to track negative research findings Say I look for a house hold in The 1850 Sumner Co.
