    1. [Clooz] Source Title information
    2. Kay Allen Groves
    3. Help! I have the stand alone version of Clooz and I need instruction in how to see what I have written in one or another source forms. When entering a new Source Title, I first must click the NEW button which opens a window containing a form to complete. The top space is for entering SOURCE TITLE followed by numerous other categories, one of which is REPOSITORY. I recently needed to find out what information I had entered on the form of which my SOURCE TITLE was "CA Birth Records from 1905 thru 1995." At the Hub I opened SOURCES and there was not a single source title -- only a long list of Repositories including quite a few duplicates and probably between one and two dozen of which had "kag [my initials] collection" --nothing in the list had any identifying document name or number, etc. Without first reading the SOURCE TITLE form I had filled in ages ago, I had no idea what I had listed as repository! So I went to Reports->Sources->All Sources to Preview them and still couldn't find a single Source Title or any helpful clue. (Incidentally, the page set-up margin didn't fit the form so I to turn twice as many pages as contained text.) How can I open the Source Title Form without wasting a lot of time clicking on all my repositories to see what I have written? Is there a way to print what I have entered into the Source Title Form? If anyone else has had this problem, please share with me how you solved it? Thanks in advance. kay thesarge

    1. [Clooz] source report problem.
    2. Gary Moyers
    3. Hi again, I am using Clooz v1.22 stand alone version with windows 2000. My problem that I am having is when I pick 'sources' from 'the hub' and then hi-lite a source entry and then pick the 'preview report on the selected source' button, the report form comes up without any of the source data entered into it. The same thing happens when I pick from the dropdown menu 'Reports/Sources/select sources'. However, choosing "Reports/Sources/ All sources" provides a report showing all the entered sources. Sorry if this has been discussed previously, I searched all of the old messages but could not find anything on this problem. best regards, Gary

    3. Hello all, I seem to be having a problem when entering a source address and was wondering if it was me or is it the program. I am using Clooz v1.22 stand alone version with windows 2000. when I try entering more than a one line address into the address dialog box by pressing the enter key to make another line say for city, state it takes me out and to the next dialog entry box as though I had pressed the 'tab' button. regards Gary

    3. In trying to archive my files I am getting the following message: "Error 3070, The Microsoft Jet database engine does not recognize 'PlaceID' as a valid field name or expression". Once I clicked on OK it seems to have finished okay. At least I have a 010104 file in my directory. Does anyone know what this message means or what I need to do to fix it? Thanks, Patty

    1. [Clooz] Re:getting names into Clooz
    2. I imported all of my names from TMG into Clooz without too many efforts. BUT once they were in the program I decided to delete all of them and just put names in as I needed them. I keep a printed list of my database with birth/death dates, and it is no trouble to put them in as needed. Also, probably unlike most Clooz users, I don't put in every name that's in one of my documents. For example, Massachusetts has a series of books giving VRs to 1850. My document consists of a zeroxed page for, say, all the Annable births for Hamilton, Mass. There may be 30 or more on a page. I simply put Annable Family for my person. That way I know I've got a copy of all the births for the Hamilton Annables. I don't take the time to list each one because that info is already in TMG. Inputting info into Clooz goes much faster this way, and I don't duplicate what is already in TMG. Lillian Cain

    3. First chose report from the options at the top of your screen while you are in the family page. Then go to contents, click on items to include, If there are choices in the area on the right, you will need to remove them by clicking on the double <, then scroll down and chose first: reference # (that is if you have chosen reference #s to be applied to each individual), second: name and a screen will come up with choices as to how you want the name to appear. Chose Last, First, Middle then click ok. Next chose: marriage date from list, then chose: death date from list. Click ok and you have your report. Then follow the instructions in the manual. Hopefully, I haven't missed any steps. I tried to copy exactly what I did, BUT! Vivian in TX

    3. Actually - I did respond to the FTM question. My new browser doesn't automatically respond to "all" so the response only went to the sender. However, just in case there are other's who have had problems, here is my response to some (though not all) FTM difficulties. I am still working on my own issues with Word2000... Gail M - I have been having problems as well, but I am determined to get it in. Here is how I have succeeded thus far. In FTM (I have 7.0 as well) select REPORT then ITEMS TO INCLUDE IN REPORT. In the right-hand column you will have a list of all your items. Select NAME by clicking on it once, then click OPTIONS. Here you can select (from a drop-down box) how you would like your name to display - select Last, First You will rename your titles AFTER the file is exported (copied and pasted into Word). FTM does not have the capability of changing field names. This is so the columns will be recognized in Clooz since PersonID,Surname,Given, etc. are the names Liz gave to the columns in her program. Make sure the title row is at the VERY TOP of the screen - delete any blank row between the top and the title row - that's a problem I had. Now - in WORD97 (I'm using 2000, but I would imagine 97 works the same way - hope so) - select EDIT/FIND. At the bottom of the tab form click MORE. At the bottom of that tab, click SPECIAL. A drop-down box will come up that will allow you to select some special marks. Select TAB CHARACTER. After you select it, it will display "^t" in the FIND field. Click on the REPLACE tab and type a comma "," (without the quotes) in the field. [ NOTE: I tried to also put in a SPACE CHARACTER, but it didn't work. Even though it looked like there were spaces in between the fields, I guess there really weren't.] Select "REPLACE" and Word will replace the tabs with commas as promised. After it's done, note that Word will put in a comma for every tab, even those places where you were missing a surname or other piece of information. Leave them there. If you have 6 titles/columns you will have 5 commas, one marker for each column. Don't change this - these are placeholders. Do a "SAVE AS" and select "TEXT ONLY (*.txt). The file should be named cloozimp.txt and saved to your Clooz directory. Ok - this is as far as I was able to get. I also got an "unable to import" error message. The new manual (thank goodness there is now a manual!) says a driver file called mstext35.dll should be in your C:\Windows\System directory. Check to see if it is there. If not, go to http://www.ancestordetective.com/kbsa.htm and download it. When I went to that site, it said it didn't exist - however, I was determined so I went directly to www.clooz.com, selected SUPPORT from the menu at the left, the KNOWLEDGE BASE from the center of the screen. It took me to http://www.clooz.com/kbsa.htm [I guess there was a typo in the manual - it happens]. Here you will find lots of error messages and the "solutions". I have Access 2000, so will be looking at those solutions - since that won't help you, I will advise you to go on from this point. Good Luck! If you get it to work, please let me know us know what resolved the issue. You are not the only one out there with a problem. 3. The reason you chose the Name format of (Last, First Middle) is that it will naturally create the two name fields supported by Clooz -- the Last name will go into the last name field; the First and Middle name will go into the First Name field (There are too many people with the same first name in my database and the middle name really helps). The comma between forms the required field separator. Good Luck, again. Patrick -- E-Mail: [email protected] or [email protected] Web Site: http://www.patrickshaul.com E-Fax: 240-525-6596

    2. Elizabeth Kelley Kerstens, CGRS
    3. I'm not sure how many of you are aware that I'm involved in bringing another genealogy utility to market, hopefully next quarter. I wanted to let the list know because the pre-publication price expires on 1 January 2001. The program is called GeneWeaver and it will help you with your family health history. There is some information available at http://www.geneweaveronline.com. You can order from the Web site if you're interested, but your charge card won't be charged until we ship. We're expecting to ship by the end of March. The program is currently in beta testing and the testing is going well. There will be a GEDCOM import routine into GeneWeaver so you can import the people you have in your genealogy program. The difference between GeneWeaver and a genealogy program is that GeneWeaver looks specifically at health issues caused by any number of factors, including genetic, environmental, etc. You'll be able to print a Medical Pedigree, similar in format to a regular pedigree chart, but it will show mortality information on four generations. You'll also be able to print a genogram, so you can clearly see with symbols what your ancestors died from. GeneWeaver is interested in four generations at a time because that's what is genetically significant. But you'll be able to shift generations to look at another set of four generations. I'm very excited about the program and think there will be a lot of interest in it. There's currently nothing similar available for family historians. I'm working on this with my partner, Norma Storrs Keating, who is a registered nurse (don't look to me for health information!). We are producing the program under our corporate name, Genes & Things, Inc. We'll have a booth for Genes & Things, Inc. right next to Ancestor Detective, LLC, at GenTech, so stop by for a demo if you're interested. The program will sell for $49.95 plus shipping after 1 January, but if you order now it's $39.95. 3. M Smith, I am sorry you are having such a time with the FTM export -- I think they have made FTM much more difficult than it needs to be. Anyway, I supplied Liz with instructions on the FTM export process a number of years ago when I started using Clooz. Try the following: 1. Take a deep breath 2. In FTM go to the report icon. 2a. Click on format 2b. Click on report format 2c. Click on Custom Report 3. Click on Contents 4. Click on Items to Include in Report 4a. Choose Reference Number 4b. Choose Name (Last, First Middle) 4c. Choose Birth date (make sure you have chosen the date format of dd month year) 4d. Choose Marriage date 4e. Choose Death date 5. Run the report 6. Click on Edit 6a. Click on Copy the Report 7. Take another deep breath 8. Open MS Word 9. Click on the Paste Icon 10. Click on the Reveal Codes Icon (it looks like the paragraph symbol -- back to High School Grammar -- a backwards P with a double stick) 11. Go to the very top of the document and delete everything until the Reference number heading. 12. Click on Edit 12a. Click on Replace 12b. Click on the More button 12c. Click on the Special button and choose the Tab (it will appear as a carat and t) 12d. Put a comma in the Replace with field 12e. Click on Replace All 13. Edit the headings on the first line to agree to the Clooz Manual 13a. Change Reference Number to the the Alternate Number -- Clooz assigns its own number, but this will add the numbers you use in FTM to your Clooz file. 14. Save file as defined in the Clooz manual and then proceed to import. 15. Take a deep breath Good Luck. It really works -- I have loaded and updated a number of times. When I first released Clooz, the manual was printed. Then I went to a manual that was included on the CD only. That's the way it has been for several years. The manual has come on the CD since about version 1.1. It's on the CD you have now. I came out again with a printed manual earlier this year that is sold separately for those who like to have a printed manual. But there has always been a manual with Clooz. >Check to >see if it is there. If not, go to http://www.ancestordetective.com/kbsa.htm >and >download it. The new site, www.clooz.com, was created after the manual was printed. More importantly, for those who get the unhelpful message "Import function was unsuccessful", there's a solution at http://www.clooz.com/kbsa.htm#62. The error message is "Import Function was not successful". If the solution there doesn't work, just send me an e-mail and I'll do everything I can to get you going in Clooz. Technical Support is and always has been free, but you gotta ask! I've been able to help everyone that has asked. The good news is that my programmer and I are working hard to get a GEDCOM feature into Clooz for the next release. I know that the Clooz import routine is terrible and I'm working to fix it.
