    1. [Clooz] Forgetting a database
    2. Bob & Julie Clark
    3. Hi, How do I get Clooz to "forget about" a database that doesn't exist any more? I created a second database to test something out, deleting it afterward. Now when I start Clooz it gives me that non-existent database as the first choice, and I have to click the dropdown to see the real one. Thanks!

    1. [Clooz] Print problem
    2. Stella Howlett
    3. Am I missing something? I'd like to print 'Select Census Reports' as shown in the manual on page 85. Most of my UK census data consists of photocopies--poor quality taken off microfilm and barely readable. I thought it would be a very good idea to put Clooz printouts back-to-back with the photocopies in page protectors. However, the Report appears horizontally over two pages in landscape mode. I can reduce the data to one page with the magnifier button but when I hit 'Print' I get the two pages of data. Is there any way I can get the report onto one page? Is it my prog, my printer (HP DeskJet 670C) or me? Regards, Stella Howlett BC, Canada

    3. You're not doing anything wrong. This is a bug that was fixed in the online patch of version 1.22 that is available for download from http://www.clooz.com/download.htm. This was fixed after the CDs that are currently for sale were produced. If you are going to download the patch, you'll need a serial number to install it. You need to be a registered user to receive a serial number from me. This is explained on the download page. If you have a copy of the most recent CD, the serial number that you were given with that CD will not work with this download. I haven't yet been able to get the serial numbers to work together. So, you'll need to get a new serial number from me if you're going to download. Please note that you must be a registered user to receive any serial number from me. If you haven't registered, please mail in your registration card or a copy of your receipt as proof of purchase. When you write to ask for your serial number, please tell me if you're going to download the stand-alone/Access 97 patch or the Access 2000 patch. The two patches use different serial numbers. Also, I'll need your name and address so I can verify that you're a registered Clooz user. 3. Hi listers, Still working on inputting all my info into Clooz. When I go to the Hub and click on "Sources", I get a list of repositories instead of sources. For example, I'm getting the name of the library where I found the book of documents, instead of the book title and info. As it stands now, I have to scroll through the list of about 30 "Camden Public Library" entries to find the source I want. What am I doing wrong and how do I change it? Heather B.

    2. Elsie Langmaid
    3. I bought this program several months ago but other than look at the sample file and read the manual and organize my files, until last night I hadn't used it. I imported my 982 names from Legacy 3.0 with no problems in about 3 minutes, what a relief. I have User ID#'s for all my people in Legacy. They are A-0001,B-0001 etc. I would like to use these numbers in Clooz as well. I was starting to enter these User ID#'s into the Alt.ID spot in Clooz but on reading the manual again, I find that this column seems to be reserved for future imports, something I will definitely be doing. I'm a little confused about lower RIN#'s at the moment, and don't need to add the additional imports now. Could someone please tell me where I should be adding my USER ID#'s. Thanks, Elsie

    1. [Clooz] Re: One doc. number or individually?
    2. I'm very interested in the various ways that people use Clooz. I may have a different approach from many. I use TMG as my primary genealogy data base and use CLOOZ more like an electronic filing cabinet. I do NOT file according to surname but rather according to type of document as Liz suggests. I use, for example, VRs, DEED, OBIT (obituaries), CLIP (newspaper clippings), GEN (published genealogies). Then as I file a document, I will assign a consecutive number, such as VRs 0001, VRs 0002... or CLIP 0001, CLIP 0002. I have a number of Vital records (VRs) as a group and may decide to re-do them into BIRTH 0001, MARRY 0001, and DEATH 0001 rather than just VRs. (Fortunately as of now my numbers are in pencil.) Many of the Massachusetts records are published in individual town books (i.e. Vital Records of Salem to 1849). If I have someone in the town, Mary Pike for example, I will xerox the births, marriages, and deaths for all the Pikes. I then assigned the birth sheets (which may be one or a dozen pages) the next consecutive number (VRs 0018 now) and put them all into the same folder. I do not input all the individual names from VRs into CLOOZ but assign the name Pike Family. That way I can tell at a glance that I have in my file a copy of all the Pike VRs from that particular book. (I do put individual names--one at a time--into CLOOZ for clippings, obits, etc. but the VR sheets might have 50 or more Pikes that are probably no relation.) I read with interest the ways that others organize their materials with CLOOZ. I am in the process of changing my system somewhat. I find that folders are not as convenient, and I have sent for archival supplies (sheets, pens, labels, notebooks) from Light Impressions (an excellent archival supplier). I plan to put each individually marked item (whether 1 page or a dozen) into a separate archival sheet, put the number on the item in pencil, and put a label with the number in ink on the outside of the sheet. Then the sheets will go into archival notebooks. By dividing the items by type (VRs, deeds, clippings, etc.) I can separate them into different notebooks for each type of document. I hope this has been clear. I haven't put as much into CLOOZ yet as I might wish because I have been trying different methods and trying to find out what works best for me. I do feel that Liz's greatest contribution to my thinking has been her suggesting that items be filed by document type rather than by surname. Lillian Cain

    2. Elizabeth Kelley Kerstens, CGRS, CGL
    3. As many of you know, I am the co-creator of another software program called GeneWeaver. It's a program to help you with your family health history. The program is in beta testing. We need more beta testers so I am appealing to this list for anyone that is interested in beta testing INTENSELY for the next month or so. Please don't respond if you can't devote some time to beta testing. We need people that are willing to put a program through its paces and let us know what problems they encounter. This is not a casual request. We expect people in the beta test to participate. As a thank you for participation, you will receive a copy of the final program, IF you participate in the beta test. There is information about the program at http://www.geneweaveronline.com. We hope to have the program on the market by the end of the summer. If you're interested in beta testing, send me an e-mail with the following information: Name, Address, e-mail, operating system Thanks! 1. [Clooz] Re: One doc. number or individually?
    2. Marianne Lindley (Girten)
    3. If the list of marriages comes from a book or other registry of this type of documents, I number it as a mBook and link each individual/couple in that one record. That way, I know it's secondary information when I print a file of documents linked to an individual I'm researching. Accordingly, I easily know that I haven't obtained primary information (a copy of the certificate, or even a marriage announcement or coverage in a newspaper about the event) and can decide if I want to further pursue primary proof about the event. If, on the other hand, I've been to a courthouse or other archive that has copies of the actual documents and obtained copies of the individual marriage license or certificate returns, etc., for this event, I individually number the document as a Mar document. As I've previously said, I'm delighted with the adaptation I've made of Sharon Debartelo (sp)Carmack's book on organizing family research documents, since it carries over so easily to numbering in Clooz. For any newbie who's interested, I follow my logic as outlined above, *but* I further refine the document numberings by starting off each document listed in Clooz (and my paper file system as well) with the first four letters of the family line I'll be filing the document; in this example of marriages, by the male name. In other words, the wife's information is filed by her family name, or maiden name, until she marries, and then it's filed under her marriage/husband's name. This is in keeping with the standardized, traditional way of compiling family group sheets and the like. To clarify: DUFF Mar 001 DUFF Mar 002, etc. for Ms. Duffy's maiden named relatives. Then, once Ms. Duffy marries, her information goes with her husband's; as follows: GIRT Mar 001 GIRT Bir 001 (for the first child I document in Clooz under her married name; be it her own child or perhaps more likely her husband's birth information when I've merged his information into this family tree. The book of marriage listings, say for early St. Louis, would be as follows: KING mBoo 001 This corresponds with the fact that my first known family line in St. Louis was the King (originally Koenig or Konig at immigration), but now may have expanded to included MOREAU, KIENLIN and MARACHEL and IVERS as well. In this way, I keep the document in one place (again, a secondary documentation) and can add new "potential" individuals as well as those whom I have better proof of relationship. To further illustrate this, in the document details for this KING mBoo 001 [King is the name, m for marriage, Boo for Book -- I use a limiter of four (4) characters for each component of this system] could include couples that I *know* are family, such as: King - Kienlin King - Ivers Kienlin - Moreau Moreau - Morachel But I could also include individuals I don't want to blindly accept into my database listing of people that are in this family line. This is another beauty of the Clooz system: I let Clooz establish an I.D. number for, say, another Moreau marriage that I locate in that same book, and I establish my own variable for the "alternate I.D."; for example, King01, or StLou05 (which I use in the city directory instance). Then, when I'm scanning through my "people" list in Clooz, I can instantly tell whether the individual listed is truly a family member or simply someone I want to keep an eye out as I do further research. Now, this isn't to say that my system is perfect. Almost every one of us, no matter how organized, oftentimes - especially when first starting this system - saying, "Hmm, what's the best way to do this, I wonder?" The best thing for anyone to do is to establish a system and STICK TO IT. You can always re-arrange your system and change your document identifiers in Clooz (tedious, I'm sure; but do-able) so the thing is to just decide what makes most sense to you and then *start.* Remember: If you ever have been in an office, sometimes you will find a filing system that makes complete sense to you ... but not to others utilizing it. And then sometimes you will find one that's totally confusing to you .. but not to others utilizing it. And no matter which way *you* find it, someone else is doing it differently. :-) Marianne

    3. Heather There seems to be many systems people use to file with. The system that I have setup in my database, is similar to what you have described. Since all pages are part of the same document I label as marriage 001-01, marriage 001-02, marriage 001-03 etc. All documents are put into sheet protectors and then label on the outside with 'Avery labels' and put into a loose leaf binder. This way I can use each page as a separate source if need be. ----- Original Message ----- From: Heather Bilodeau To: [email protected] Sent: 6/5/2001 5:36:31 PM Subject: [Clooz] newbie question Hi listers, I just bought Clooz and have started to input my documents. 3. Hi Heather, Rhonda and Dick If I'm right in thinking that you have lists of marriages on many pages, I think I'd treat each page as a separate document--numbering each as you suggest, Heather--and link the people to that specific page accordingly. That way, if you ever need to go back to that initial record, you won't have to wade through umpteen pages looking for it. You will have specified the exact page where it's to be found in the your records. Anyone else with experience with this? (Fun, isn't it?) Regards, Stella BC, Canada

    3. The only problem I see, is if you lose your Clooz database. Then you will have a hard time finding documents. If all birth, death, marriage, obits, wills, etc are kept in the same binder, I could see it being hard to find one person's info. Where if you at least have a binder/s for birth, one of death,etc... you will only have to look in that one binder for the info should the computer crash and all electronic data is lost. 2. Heather,       I also have 2 databases, my mom's family and my dad's family.  Many people prefer to have only one, but that just shows Clooz is very adaptable.  However, if your mom and dad came from the same place such as the same county, then you should rethink having 2 databases.       I've chosen in general to put data from their marriage on with my dad's family which means I also put myself, my siblings, and our families with my dad's.  Actually it doesn't come up very often.  So far I only have my mom in my dad's database once - a newspaper article on my paternal grandparents' 60th anniversary.                                                                   Keren

I tried to create the second one and the software indicated I could not create a duplicate and should take out enough information to put the different names in one census record.
