    3. Tuesday, June 5, 1928...The Bridgewater Bulletin, Bridgewater, N.S. LUNENBURG, May 30 - Captain C. Iverson, of the firm of Robin, Jones & Whitman, Lunenburg, this morning received the following message from Captain Barkhouse, S.S. Arras, via Chebuctou Head, and dated May 30: "Jerry Cleveland, of Blandford, N.S., lost overboard last night from schooner "Bluenose" and drowned. Accident occurred off Canso. Arras and dories from schooner searched but failed to find Cleveland. The young man thus mentioned, who belonged to Blandford, was married only a year ago. Details of the drowning were learned this afternoon, when the Bluenose arrived in her home port. The S.S. Arras was towing the schooner from Port Hawkesbury. When outside of Canso the parcelling of the tow-line became loosened. Cleveland and two other men went forward to adjust the trouble, which necessitated Cleveland stepping out over the bow. He was standing on one of the headstays, with his arm hooked over the rail, when the vessel suddenly dipped, causing him to lose his balance and to be thrown into the water. For a minute or two he was seen floating, when he suddenly disappeared and did not come again to the surface. A dory was immediately put out, but when it reached the spot all that could be found was the man's hat. Besides his wife he is survived by his parents, two brothers, and two sister, all residing at Blandford.

    1. Cleveland China
    2. Does anyone know anything about china bearing the mark "Cleveland" and then under that, the word "China." I have one small fruit dish, with a pretty rose design on opposite sides. I don't know if Cleveland is the pattern name, or if there was a Cleveland China Company in Cleveland, or somewhere else. Since I have Cleveland lineage, I'd really like to find out. Thanks. D.Ross

    3. You're right this group doesn't seem to have much activity at the moment. Our Clevelands I'm told were British loyalists who came from the U.S. after the war of independance r and settled in the eastern townships of Quebec. I've also been told that most of the Clevelands and Cleavelands of the Northern U. S. and Canada tie into Moses and Ann. I have photographed the Cleveland graves in the Danville Quebec cemetery if anyone would like a copy. I also have a digital copy of the family record page of Holsey and Hosmer Cleveland of Danville from their Bible.

    1. [CLEAVELAND] Surname Spelling
    2. Dick Florance
    3. Relative to the current debate on the spelling: Long before the founding of the city of Cleveland, OH, some of our ancestors spelled the name as "Cleveland". Micro-film of the original March 12, 1713/14 probate records, dealing with the survivors of Josiah Cleaveland, indicates that the name was spelled "Cleavland" (yes w/o the "e") by the court, but both young John and Henry signed using the "Cleveland" spelling. If anyone would like a .jpg scan of this record, just ask. Dick F

    3. For what it is worth.... In my GGG Grandfather papers....(actually his Blackhawk War Pension file). There are document with both spellings; CLEVELAND and CLEAVELAND in the body of the same documents. The documents themselves were signed with "their marks" ... X The bottom line to me is that "Gold is where you find it" and "Spelling doesn't count" /s/ kNorm (<- the k is silent as in knife)
