Those 5 daughters were: 1. Eliza Ashburn 2. Clarissa Sidney Claypoole 3. Susanna Claypoole 4. Rachel Claypoole 5. Jane Claypoole For their husbands and children, grandchildren etc., go to http://www.betsyrosshouse.org/hist_woman/desc_01.pdf Using those names, US census & BMD data, you may be able able to prove your family connection to Betsy. My great grandmother, Annie Francis Kennedy, took great delight in claiming to be a descendant of Betsy Ross. She was a member of the DAR and like your grandmother was a woman of great integrity and would have nothing to gain by claiming something that wasn't true. I have made a couple of attempts to locate the direct line through the DAR and they were less than helpful and quick to let me know that many people "falsely claimed" ( I believe were the words) to be descendants of Betsy Ross. I have been unable to link directly to Betsy Ross although I did find a connection through a Major William Kennedy that served during the American Revolution. I wish I knew how to help you with your search but I am quite frankly at a stand still with it. As you can see by other posts, several are trying to help but I also am unable to connect the dots. Please let me know if find anything. Rick Durham Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My paternal grandmother, Alice Victoria Smith was born in Shirley Indiana in 1907. She married Joseph Raymond Krug in about 1927. She always claimed that our family (on her side) was related to Betsy Ross. There have been several individuals in our family given the middle name of Ross based upon this belief. However, I, like you, have reached a point where I would like to learn what I am able regarding this tale. My grandmother was not known to be one to tell tales for the sake of it. Thus, I have to believe she had been told this from her childhood from others. How do I begin to attempt to connect the dots, assuming there are any dots to be connected? I have read your reader's notes and recognize no names or see no Indiana connections. I do notice one family passed through ! Indiana to Iowa. There had been a story of our family moving west and getting as far west as Iowa, and turning back and settling in Indiana. What do you suggest? Would you e-mail me directly at [email protected] as I am not a "blog-watcher" and only found your site by Googling? Thanks and all the Betsy to you! :- Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. She always stated that she was related to Betsy Ross. She said she would have been her Aunt on her Dad, Clint Ross's side. Surname tests allow genealogists to verify their father's father's father's (and so on) paternal ancestry. Surname DNA information can be very powerful when combined with traditional family history paper trails. This Claypoole Surname Y-DNA Project was started to: 1. Help researchers from common or related families work together to find their shared heritage. 2. Identify how the participant's families are connected, both genetically and through paper trails. 3. Identify and confirm genetic lineages of ancestral families. 4. Ultimately catalog pedigrees and genetic connections of all of the known project families. A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. Since surnames are passed down from father to son as is the Y-chromosome, this project is for males taking a Y-DNA test. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA so the tested individual must be a male. All natural born (not adopted) males bearing the Claypoole, Claypool or Claypole surname (and any other recognised spelling variation) from all locations in the USA and worldwide are invited to participate in the Claypoole Surname Project .
