This has been received from the Rootsweb administration: Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. Sincerely, The RootsWeb team We are presently setting up email groups at https://groups.io/. If there is interest in migrating this list to groups.io please respond to this message to that effect ASAP. With heavy hearts, Jim and Di
We just wanted to encourage you all to make use of this list in your family searches. A large number of Rootsweb lists have been made inactive due to no messages over a period of time. We want to keep as many lists active as we possibly can and your participation will help toward that goal. If you have a "brick wall" in your family search, send in a message with as much information as you have and let's see if someone may be able to help fill in those blanks. Best wishes, Jim and Di

Claypool was born in 1789 in Hampshire County and studied medicine with an Uncle in Indiana. He graduated from the University of Lexington, Kentucky and settled near St. Louis later moving to Belleview, St. Clair County. He was one of the appraisers of the estate of Elizabeth Swaggart, 15 September 1836, the mother of Caty Swaggart Vanorsdal.392 The family left the area in 1836 moving to Ft. Madison, Lee County, Iowa where John C. Claypool helped establish and later became the Warden at the Iowa State Prison. [source: The History of Lee County, Iowa, Containing a History of its Cities, Towns, etc. (Chicago, Western His. Co., 1879), 854.] Notice the difference in the birth dates for John. The above article was enclosed in the Biography of his son I believe. If Blondius was born in 1762 and John C. in 1789 she would have been about age 20 at that date. 1800 seems to late as a birth date of John, as Catherine, his sister was probably just married and had her first child in 1802 or so. But the birth of John gives us a starting point in placing the other children. Blondius, the daughter of Nathaniel Claypool and his wife Sarah, was born in 1762. After the death of her husband she apparently moved in with her son John and traveled to Lee County, Iowa with him. She died there about 1846 and is buried in the Claypoole Family Cemetery, Ft. Madions, Iowa. Her inscription reads: "Blondenah Kuykendall Claypoole, In her 84th year, daughter of Nathaniel, granddaughter of Jacob, sister to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Katherine and Sarah, wife of Jeremiah Claypool married 14 May 1781, Hampshire County, Virginia." George Claypool born 1782 in Hampshire County Virginia, died 16 October, 1866, perhaps her son, is also buried in the Claypoole Family Cemetery and other family members. [Source: find a Grave] And here is yet another interesting piece of information, this from St. Clair County Circuit Court Case 2679, Peter Kuykendall v. Simon Vanorsdal et al. Capius Debt, 1810, IRAD, "On the back of said writ is the following: to wit." When I hit the sourced URL you posted, it came up unavailable, can you give it to me as the author and title. This is very interesting, That trace provided a major highway between those two locations. I really really delighted to have this information. If anyone has complied a family history or list for Jeremiah and Blondius, it apparently has not been posted to Ancestry. Jeremiah appears in so many records with Simon. But I wondered if there might also be a son Jeremiah. Here is another record you might find of interest and I am not clear at this time exactly what the debt was all about. St. Clair County Case 2679, Book B 185, C 22.52Peter Kuykendall v. Simon Vanorsdal et al, the al. being Jeremiah Kuykendall. a Capius Debt in 1819. Now both Simon and Jeremiah were involved in the kidnapping of the Kuykendall Slaves beginning in 1802 or so. Supposidly Jeremiah was going to return them to Hampshire County to be sold, but a series of freedom lawsuits by Phyllis and her children, Bob, Kate, Hanah, George, Peggy and Lydia delayed that and it never occurred, must I am sure to the great annoyance of Peter Kuykendall and his siblings, so the debt might be about those cases. The debt was for $433.35 1/2 with damages of #100.00 filed the 27 day of May 1814. A notation at the bottom of the first page reads,"On the Back of which said writ is the following Endorsement, to wit, "this is an action founded on a note under seal and bail is requested, sig! ned John Johnson Att. for Plaintiff. and on which said writ is the following return, to wit 'Executed on both, but could not commit Simon Vanorsdal to the Jail, he being a Ranger in the United States SErvice. Jeremiah Claypoole running at large for want of a Jail, signed H. J. Mills." They eventually rounded them up and I think Peter was awarded the money. I appreciate the information which you posted and hopefully, others will be able to add more to this story. Would you please share your first name so I can correctly cite the information you have shared. Do you descend from John? It is likely the following refers to Jeremiah and Blondius Claypoole's son John: 'Dr. John Claypole, of Vincennes. where he was born in 1800, was educated in the schools of that city, and was among the early nineteenth century contingents. When a young man he took the trace that lead him to St. Clair County, where he located on the Bluffs near Caseyville, in which village he practiced nearly eight years. After his election as sheriff of St. Clair County, he took up his residence in Belleville. When his tenure of office expired he moved to Fort Madison, Iowa. After a period of practice there, he assumed the position of warden of the newly erected Iowa State Penitentiary and held it until his death, eight years later. Hi Listers, Thanks to list admin Diane for raising the Claypoole research issue. In my opinion, more objective research (in primary documents and records which can be cited) is required to answer significant questions, which should include the following: 1. Did the children of (Sir) John Cleypole/Claypole/Claypoole, 1595-1660, who remained in England produce lines that have living descendants, either still in England or elsewhere? 2. Did the siblings of (Sir) John Cleypole/Claypole/Claypoole, 1595-1660, or other offspring of Sir John's Cleypole/Claypole/Claypoole ancestors, produce lines that have living descendants, either still in England or elsewhere? 3. John Claypoole, 1752-1817, of Philadelphia, initially served in the U.S. Army during the Revolutionary War. Later in the war, he shipped out on the Luzerne, a U.S. privateer. In the 2nd half of 1781, the ship and its crew were captured by a British privateer and John became a POW in Mill Hill prison, Plymouth, Devon, England. Before and during his captivity, he kept a 'memorandum book' and in the back of that book, he wrote a number of addresses including "Benjamin West, Newman Street, London" (BW was the celebrated artist/painter, born at Swarthmore, Pa) and "Haslam and Cleypole, cyder merchants and Fruiterers No. 75 upper Thames Street, London". Until 1787, Benjamin Cleypole was a partner in Haslam & Cleypole and later married Ann Haslam on May 28, 1789, at Spitalfields Christ Church, Stepney, London. The John Claypoole in question became the 3rd husband of Elizabeth Griscom Ross Ashurst, aka 'Betsy Ross'. The $64 question is: what was the familial relationship, if any, between John Claypoole of Philadelphia, Pa and Benjamin Cleypole of London, England? 4. Who was the father of James Claypole/Claypoole c1742- c1813, latterly of Armstrong Co, Pa, USA? (Please do not offer Evelyn Bracken's discredited version!) As a contribution/one place to start on at least one of the above questions, well researched work by Kathie Young on her ancestor, James Claypole/Claypoole, c1742- c1813, latterly of Armstrong Co, Pa and my definitive work on James Claypoole, Sr., 1721-1784(Gregorian calendar) of Philadelphia, Pa and James Claypoole, Jr., c1743-1822, of Philadelphia, Pa and Kingston, Jamaica, WI may be found at www.claypoolefamily.com It is generally accepted that the earliest Claypoole (this is how they spelled their own surname) named persons to arrive in North America were the brothers Norton Claypoole, 1640-1688, who arrived at New Jersey in mid 1678 (his wife, Rachel, and their children followed in 1681) and James Claypoole, 1634-1687, the Quaker, and his family (excluding son John, who arrived in 1682) landed at Philadelphia on October 1, 1683. The first published, definitive genealogy of these Claypooles and their early descendants is that by Rebecca Irwin Graff, namely Genealogy of the Claypoole Family of Philadelphia 1588-1893. J.B. Lippincott Company, Philadelphia, USA (1893). Following publication of the Ist edition, Graff received additional information from other Claypoole family descendants, which was published in Appendix II of the 1894, 2nd edition. Clearly, one of her correspondents was from the 'Maryland line', most likely Julia Ann Claypoole Rasin, 1840-1899, of Baltimore. Julia Rasin was a daughter of Capt. John Claypoole, 1803-1883, and a 4 x greatgranddaughter of James Claypoole, 1634-1687, the Quaker. Consequently, Appendix II, pp v-ix has a very accurate genealogy of early Maryland Claypooles family descendants, from Nathaniel Claypoole, 1672-1714, to Regina Alice Rasin, b. 1883. One way of connecting (or differentiating) males carrying the Claypoole/Claypool/Claypole/Cleypole etc surname is by testing their yDNA, the test results being available for comparison with each other, which in turn can indicate those individuals who are likely to share a common ancestor. A benchmark yDNA is already available, linked to a well researched 'paper' genealogy, from a male descendant of the Claypoole family of Northborough, Northamptonshire, England. For more information on the Claypoole etc Surname yDNA Project, go to http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Claypoole and/or http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/claypoole and/or http://www.ysearch.org/ (click on 'Search by last name' tab) and key in "claypoole, claypool, claypole" For those interested in/users of social media, checkout 'Claypoole Connection' at Facebook which currently has 160 members, go to https://www.facebook.com/groups/225184095526/ I am always interested in talking to and working collaboratively with serious researchers who are prepare to commit time and resources to Claypoole family history research. Sam lists their 10 children, the 2nd being William R Claypool born Apr 1852 (from 1901 census). Sam's census search has Joseph enumerated as follows: 1850-Grainger, TN; 1860-Benton, AR; 1870-Greene, MO; 1880-Dade, MO and 1900-Cedar, MO. Again, according to Sam, Joseph (1825-1906) was the son of Joseph Claypool(c1770-<1840-who married at least 3 times) and Rebecca Sanders. When she died c1839 in Grainger, TN, her 3 underage children were "bound out, according to the law". Sam lists Joseph Sr. on the following censuses: 1810-Kanawha, VA and 1830-Grainger, TN.
