Hello, I'd like to know if anyone has any information on a James CLARKE or CLARK who was married in Westport, MA, in 1829. He married Mrs. Rhoda LAVARE whose maiden name was Rhoda MANCHESTER. On the marriage records James listed his previous residence as Little Compton, RI. Nothing else is known about him. But, he probably died during the 1840's, as his wife and daughter are listed in the 1850 Census for Westport, MA, but he is not. As far as I know so far, James and Rhoda CLARKE had only one child, Mary Anna CLARKE/CLARK born in Westport in 1837. I don't know where or when, but Mary CLARK/E married John DEXTER from Killingly, CT. Just recently I heard that this couple was living in Westport, MA, possibly in the 1860's and into the 1870's. I do not know where they lived in the 1880's, but by 1890 they had moved to Melrose, MA. I also do not know about any children of John and Mary DEXTER. But in 1892, they adopted a girl who had just turned 3. And, they re-named the child, Mary Anna Clark DEXTER. They were Age 55 at the time. In 1899 Mrs. Mary Dexter died and was buried in Killingly, CT. Around the same time, John Dexter "disappeared into thin air." My newly found "distant cousin," Karen is researching Mrs. Rhoda LAVARE also. She is descended from the children of Rhoda's first marriage. Thank you for your time.
