Hi Joe, I know you are talking about Silas CLARKE's, but I'd like to mention that one of my grandfather's was named, Silas. He was one of the youngest of 13 children, and was named after the long-time, well-liked Town Clerk in Stoneham, MA, who was named Silas DEAN. My grandfather was given the name, Silas Dean LEWIS, when he was born there in 1898. I'm the one who has the James CLARK/E who mysteriously showed up in Little Compton, RI, around 1825, and who mysteriously disappeared from nearby Westport, MA, in the 1840's. My "gut feeling" is that he was from a New England family, but no researcher has laid claim to him. He was either born around 1800, as his wife (1829) was, or he was older than she was and was born around 1780's. Betty, and Joe; I have a James Clarke, b. about 1809 in Madison CO, NY to [--?--] and Sarah Clarke. This family came from RI in the early 1800's, but I have not been able to get Mr. Clarke's first name. The "Josiah" being discussed by yourself and others is as fitting as any other first name. The Clarkes were farmers and settled in Brookfield, in the SE corner of Madison Co. Their children were: James 1809, John Thompson 1811, Luther 1815, Welcome 1817 and Sarah 1825. James may have moved with his mother and her second husband after [--?--] Clarke died about 1830. James' return to RI seems perfect reasonable. J. T. Clark is my maternal g g grandfather who was a prominent lawyer in Allamakee, CO, IA. He m. Elizabeth Blakeslee in 1835. Elizabeth and her family resided near Paris Hill, Oneida Co., NY. If this stirs up any ideas, please respond. Margaret Carefree, AZ
