    3. That is probably the case...did you know that in the 1840's in Wabash County...east of Edwards that there were flatboats and barges up and down the Wabash to New Orleans, and that at one time there were as many as 40 barges stopped at Rochester Mills about 7 miles south of Mt. Carmel...on any given day? I descend from Elias Clark,M.D. of Wabash County...some of his Children resided in Edwards Co., in Bone Gap and Browns...and Albion. Pettiford is not necessarily an indication of African ancestry...some Welsh and even French have also been known to have darker complexions and dark eyes...Pettiford can certainly be French (or French Creole ),creole....a better indication of her supposed status would be a copy of a document with her signature...large C by her signature would indicate French Creole...small c indicates, in that era, a person of mixed blood sometimes a slave, sometimes not. Whatever, her heritage, she is certainly pleased that someone...is interested in finding out about her...good luck in your search! Let me know if you run across my elusive Elias Clark! 3. humorously, the only indication i have that pettiford is of black ancestry, is because she was an african american. i know the name is french. i just have yet to track where in my lineage they imported from france.... thank you thank you thank you for the small c large C education.... i didn't realize there would be a difference...
