I'm looking for information about the children or siblings of John CLARK, Jr., who married Susan BEACH on 21 May 1819 in Essex Co. NJ. John and Susan lived in Paterson NJ and his parents were John CLARK and Jane SLATER, who immigrated from Scotland in 1794. Does anyone have any information about this CLARK family? I have a John CLARK who was in WV in 1861 but was born in Paterson in 1824. Trying to verify that he was the son of John, Jr. and Susan BEACH. Can anyone provide any help? This was probably my cousin's information. She is Mormon and I think I have her records. I live in NE and have not been able to find anything in Gage Co. on Clarks. I found census in KS on the Stocktons, on the census it recorded she was born in Iowa. Thanks for your help. Hi Jim... I have lots of William Clark(e)s born about that time in NY in my data base but none listed who had a Martha for a wife or Silas or Horace for kids. However, That doesn't mean I don't have his parents of other kids of him listed. Do you have the names of his kids spouses? I may have some of them... Can you narrow the time and area a little more precise by locating them in the 1850, 1860, 1870, etc census in NY? I may be able to locate other members in his family in that manner.. Had the following children: William born 3 Mar 1865, Sylias 1867, Horace 1868, and Henry 1870 who moved to Nevada. Any help to find the ancestors of William and of Martha will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim
Glad to see action on the Clark(e) list. My brick wall is Susan Clark(e) who was born Feb. 28, 1818 in South Carolina & Died in Walker Co, Texas in 1901.Susan married James J. Hudson in South Carolina. They moved to Georgia & Crenshaw Alabama (where James died ). Susan came to Texas with her daughters & their husbands. Carolyn Fenton cafent1@aol.com
John Baylis Clarke, Sr. born c1791 in SC is my biggest brick wall. I would love to know who his parents and/or siblings were. A Jane Clarke was living with him in the Anderson SC 1850 census listed as being born in 1777. She could have been his mother, possibly stepmother or maybe older wife. She was listed as Mrs Jane Clarke at the estate sale after John Sr's death in 1855. Both John and Jane state on the 1850 census that they were born in SC, but in the 1860 census, Jane states that she was born in NC. In the 1860 census, Jane got younger so she could have been born as late as 1783 in NC. John's wife was listed as Jennie Sammons in Clarke family records. We think she may have been from Greenville Dist. SC. John shows up in Anderson at least by the 1830s as a carpenter and cabinet maker. He often shows up in probates as the coffin maker. John bought his first lots in the town of Anderson in 1836 from Daniel Brown. J. B. Clarke, as he called himself, served on the Anderson Town Council from 1845 to 1855. He died in 1855, but I have not been able to find his obituary. His son J.B. Clarke, Jr, his son-in-law Jesse R. Smith, A. M. Holland, and E. F. Murrah signed his estate Bond. I don't know his connection to the last two men. John's son John Baylis Clarke, Jr. married Martha Nevitt, daughter of William Miles Nevitt and was a merchant tailor in Anderson as was their son Elias Lake Clark who was my ggrandfather. John B. Clarke, Jr. was in business with his brother-in-law Jesse R. Smith, who was also a merchant taylor I believe the" John Baylis" comes from a prominant family in the Anderson SC area and upstate SC-- the Earles. There was a John Baylis Earle and a Baylis Earle- John Baylis Earle fought in the Rev war and later was a general and Baylis Earle was a judge. I haven't found a kinship to this family, so my Clarkes may have just been named for them. The Miles name found in my Clarkes' names comes from MD and the Nevitts. The Lake name comes from the Lakes of Edgefield who were related to my 3rd generation Clarkes through William Miles Nevitt's wife Elizabeth Hutchison. One of Elizabeth Hutchison's cousins was a man named Elias Lake. These Clarkes in Anderson spelled their name with an "e" at the end. When my line moved to Union, SC, the "e" was dropped. I am looking forward to hearing from you and would welcome any clues that might help me with the ancestry of my Clarkes. Susan Clark Johanson Descendants of Unknown CLARKE Generation No. 1 1.
