Yes, I believe this is the Pikeville family that does not appear related to mine. At the same time, both the naming patterns and migration route of this family (mine went to Madison Co AR) suggests that there could be an earlier connection. If you have any direct male Clark descendants in your family, it would be worth your while to see if someone would be willing to participate in the Clark dna project. My husband has already been tested and we have one match--a branch of the family that migrated to Arkansas. We are hoping for other PA, NC and SC families to test--primarily lines that descend from Scot-Irish Clarks who were in Lancaster & York Counties in PA, Orange, Guilford, Randolph & Rowan Counties in NC, and York Co in SC. When I read about fellow CLARK researchers having brickwalls I always wonder if they know about the CLARK DNA project. We have three brothers for whom we can't find the parents -- Eli, John, and Henry known to be in Burke Co. GA about 1802. I am still looking for information about a Ruth Mansfield Clark who had a baby girl in the Alexandria Virginia Hospital in 1933. Hospital records list her age as 38 and that she had seven other children. She was taken to Hoadly, Virginia after the birth of this child. Barbara, The short answer is no, however I have been looking into one Bledsoe County TN Clark in particular and am aware that there were two different Clark families in Bledsoe County very early. One Clark family lived in the vicinity of Bledsoe's county seat--Pikeville, I think. I do not know much about this family, except that there is no immediate connection that we can find. The other Clark in Bledsoe County was a Thomas Clark who filed for pension benefits in 1819. He had a wife Sarah and daughter Jane and was born in 1755--the same year we believe to be the approximate year of birth for our Thomas. His application indicates that he served during the Revolutionary War under General John Neville and Captain Stephen Ashby. I have been told that the area from which Stephen Ashby primarily recruited is in what is now Hampshire County WV. Unfortunately, it is not enough information to tell us one way or another whether or not this is our Thomas Clark. I believe there is a possibility that he could be. The youngest son of our Thomas Clark lived somewhere over the county line in Van Buren County Another researcher disagrees. But we simply lack sufficient information about him to make any real determination either way. One thing that has my attention is the name of your Anderson Clark. He cannot be the son of our Thomas Clark, because Thomas was in Kentucky very early--possibly as early as 1782, definitely by the mid-1790's. In my branch of the Clark family, however, I have a great grandson of Thomas whose name was Henry Anderson Clark. In a family that had very strong naming patterns, I have not been able to figure out exactly why he was given the name Anderson. Henry was the name of his maternal grandfather, but Anderson is not a name that any other member of the immediate family had. Hi everyone. As a point of clarification, the graveyard which I visited is in Burlington, Halton Township, Ontario. The place was known as Nelson, Halton Township when Abigail first settled there. At this point, I know she applied for a UEL land grant and received one. The UEL Library in Toronto has not been able to find the grant although it should have been on file according to their records. The search is still on for that one. It is grant 533. She was born in New York on March 27th 1760 most probably in Goshen N.Y. Although she first married a man named William BURNEY I have no idea when or where that marriage occurred. William is pretty elusive as I have been unable to find any information about him. He appears to have been a Captain with the British during the American Revolution. They had at least three children that I know of: 1. Joseph BURNEY born in NY who later also settled in Nelson Twp. Halton Co., Ontario ( as per 1851 and 1861 census records). He was a Captain with Sir Isaac Brock's army during the War of 1812, working closely with his Uncle , Col. Robert LAND, his mother's brother. Hi Joe, Yes, we think there is a good possibility that this Joseph Clark who married Margaret Faver may be the son of William & Margaret Clark of Lancaster County, PA. Several comments: 1. I do not think it's likely that Joseph was born in North Carolina, much less Mecklenburg County at the early year of 1734. Another researcher has placed Joseph (incorrectly, I believe) as the son of William Clark of Orange County. That William Clark was a son of James & Elizabeth Clark of Orange Co NC, his son Joseph was not born until 1782 and died in Clay Co, MO, in May 1857. (There is, however, the possibility of a connection, as several sons of Rebecca Clark Baldridge Boggs had property adjacent to James & Elizabeth Clark and Rebecca herself is buried in Mecklenburg Co NC. More on that in a moment.) Most migration from PA to NC did not take place before the 1750's. 2. Joseph Clark b. 1732 is the right age to be the same Joseph who was the son of William & Margaret Clark of Lancaster Co PA. My notes give his sister Rebecca Clark Baldridge an estimated 1725 dob and brother Thomas dob between 1710-1730. The oldest son Peter died before 09 Feb 1788, when a letter of administration was filed for his wife Mary. Assuming he was about 60 years old when he died, that would give him an estimated dob of 1728, well within the same age range as Joseph, Rebecca and Thomas. 3. James & Elizabeth Clark's daughter Elinor married her cousin John Clark, and the two sold property in Randolph Co NC on 19 Jan 1786. By 1789 John & Elinor were in Madison Co KY on Paint Lick Creek, where John is enumerated on the tax list for that year. Their son Absalom Clark b. 1771-1780 married Sarah Campbell on 09 Mar 1797 in Madison Co KY. Sarah's sister Elizabeth Campbell Mayfield gave consent to the marriage. The document was signed by both William Mayfield and Elizabeth Mayfield. Mayfield researcher Phil Norfleet theorizes that William Mayfield was William Randolph Mayfield, brother of Micajah Mayfield of York Co, SC. Both Micajah & Randolph Mayfield came to KY from York Co SC. I believe Mr. Norfleet's theory is correct for a body of reasons that involve my branch of the Clark family. 4. Also on Paint Lick Creek in Madison Co KY not far from John & Elinor Clark were my Thomas Clark SR b. 1755 and oldest son Samuel b. 1775, enumerated on the 1796 tax list. On 01 Jun 1798 Thomas & Samuel were enumerated on the Lincoln Co KY tax list, and in 1799 when Pulaski Co KY was formed from Lincoln, they were enumerated in Pulaski. Subsequent tax lists show Thomas & Samuel to be on Pitman Creek. In Jul 1805, Absalom Clark was enumerated on Pitman Creek with 200 acres, and by 1806, a widowed Elinor Clark also appears on Pitman Creek in Pulaski Co KY. The same year, Samuel & Mary Campbell Hand appeared in Pulaski Co. (Samuel Hand had purchased 100 acres from Micajah Mayfield in York Co SC in 1794, however he went back & forth between SC & TN for a number of years.) At any rate, the years 1806-1807 find all these families in Pulaski Co KY at the same time: Thomas Clark SR (b. 1755); Elinor Clark and son Absalom w/wife Sarah Campbell, and Samuel Hand w/ wife Mary Campbell. By 1808, Elinor Clark, Absalom Clark and Samuel Hand were all gone from Pulaski Co. All are found later in Warren Co, TN, including several Thomas Clark Sr's sons. 5. A researcher of the Hand surname states that when Samuel Hand applied for a Rev. War pension, (he was living in Warren Co.), one of the men he named as a character witness was Thomas Clark. When Mary applied for her widow's pension (also in Warren Co.), after Samuel's death, Sarah Clark swore she had been present at Samuel and Mary's wedding. He goes on to state that other Clarks enter into the Hand family before the Rev. War in PA and then moved to NC. I am not sure if the Thomas Clark mentioned was Thomas Clark SR or his son Thomas JR, however I have relatively confident that it was one of the two. Additionally, I believe Sarah Clark was none other than Sarah Campbell who married Absalom Clark in Madison Co KY. Both Absalom & Sarah Clark died in Warren Co TN. 6. Finally, Samuel Hand's brother Aaron Hand married Rebecka Henry on 27 Sep 1798 in Lincoln Co NC. Rebecka Henry's mother was Margaret Baldridge, daughter of Rebecca Clark Baldridge, daughter of William & Margaret Clark of Lancaster Co PA and sister of Joseph Clark, who may be the same Joseph Clark who died in York Co SC. If our reasoning is correct and Joseph Clark was the same Joseph Clark named in the will of William Clark of Lancaster Co PA, it also stands to reason that our Thomas Clark SR b. 1755 may be the son of Joseph's brother Thomas, also named in William's will. We have found evidence of an older Thomas Clark SR who received a Kentucky County VA land preemption on Licking Creek in November 1779, about the same time and not far from the preemptions of Daniel Boone and Richard Henderson, owner of the Transyvlania Company. For reasons I won't elaborate here, we think our Thomas was too young to have been this Thomas Clark, however we know that James Clark, the son of our Thomas, married a great niece of Richard Henderson. The possibility that our Thomas was a son of this earlier Thomas Clark, who in turn may have been the son of William & Margaret Clark of Lancaster Co PA and brother of Joseph Clark of York Co SC appears to be reasonable. I'm still looking for descendants of William Clark of Orange Co NC, Samuel Clark of Randolph Co NC, Joseph Clark of York Co SC, John Baptist Clark of Lancaster Co PA, Baptist Clark of Guilford Co NC and Baptist Clark of Madison Co KY--particularly male descendants who would be willing to participate in the Clark dna project for the purpose of determining once and for all if these lines are connected. It is difficult to track Lucas Clark in Northampton, very little is recorded of him. There is a second Lucus Clark in Northampton who marries Achsah Clark on November 28,1811 recorded in the vital records of Northampton until 1840. Dikeman, Julia C. 9/12/1839 Lucas was a master millwright (one that install, repair and maintain machinery which is used in factories) in Sullivan County near Mamakating, This area of Sullivan County NY was growing rapidly along with Newburgh 20 miles or so to the east. Lucas dies suddenly leaving Phila to take care of all the children by herself. Phila stays in Sullivan county for the 1830 federal census. The census shows the following information: 1 - male under 5 yrs ( Leander would be 2/3 yrs) 2 - Females 5 and Under 10 (Katherine 8 & Elizabeth 9) 1 - Female 10 and Under 15 (Margaret 15) 1 - Female 15 and Under 20 (Jane Marah 19) 1 - Female 40 and Under 50 (Phila) The question is were is Edson, he would have been 17 at the time, adult at the point. I believe Edson was on his own trying to find work and a place for the family to live. We have in the family library a letter written to Edson and Phila by Wocester Avery, Phila's brother, dated 1837. The letter is sent to Mr. Edson Clark Phillipsport, Sullivan County NY. Phillipsport is in Sullivan County, north of Rt 17 on 208. In the letter Worcester writes "I feel to rejoice to hear that you are doing so well..." and "The season is so far advanced that I think I should not visit you..." (letter is writen in February 1837) Worcester also writes to Phila about Beluckah, Mariah and Leander, which are her children. The Avery family in Easthampton helped raise some of Phila's children during this period. Worcester ends his letter by saying.."Sister you did not write what was your occupation. I suppose you are with Edson, your son. I conclude that you have more leisure then formally and are not troubled about providing, which is a great care for a female to do. I hope your care will never be so great or it has been what shall I say more. I want to impress it upon you to improve time it is certain that we must all die when shall we have a better to prepare then now?" Edson marries Ruth Clark sometime prior to 1837, their first child, Leander Jr. is born 1837 in Beattiesbury, NY. Sometime after the 1830 census, Phila moves to Orange County, probably to Newburgh. The 1840 census from Orange County shows Phila Clark as head of household with children in the household. From Edson's Obituary Newburgh 1885 Born in Easthampton MA, he came to Orange county and with his father Lucas Clark in 1820. Early in life he learned the trade of a stone cutter, and continued at the business until he was 22 yrs old. He then became interested in the firm of Oakley & Davis, of Newburgh and represented the firm at New Milford. Afterwards he was a member of the firm Stanton & Clark, proprietors of the Highland Iron works, and when the firm was desolved he formed a partnership with S.G. Kimball and conducted the foundryon Washington Street, until about 1850, when he disposed of his interest because of failing health. Edson Hubbard was the first Clark to settle in Newburgh NY. He resided at 252 Liberty Street. Edson was a partner in the firm of Clark and Kimble, an iron foundry on Washington St . a. Leander died 19 Sep 1906 in Middle Hope, NY. Born in Beattiesburg, Sullivan County moved to Newburgh at the age of 6 months. Leander Jr. is named after Edson Hubbards brother, Leander. Leander Jr. was educated principally in private schools, graduation from the Newburgh Academy in 1853. (See Attached Pictures) He became a master mechanic at his fathers foundry. At the outbreak of the Civil War he received an appointment as paymaster's steward on board the US Somerset, a gunboat. In 1863 he was promoted to paymaster's clerk which position he held until he was honorably discharged from the service in August 1864. Six months later he married Juliette Weed. In 1869 he entered the brick-making business which he continued until 1888, when he retired from active business. The brickyard area was called "Clark's Dock." The first locomotive to run on the new West Shore Railroad was unloaded from a boat onto "Clark's Dock." The brickyard was sold to John B. Rose, and the name "Clark's Dock" was changed to "Roseton", which it still bears today. The Rose's built a mansion on the hillside above the brickyard which is now a restaurant called "Beau Rivage." As of 2003 the "Beau Rivage is razed, however the sign marking it location is still visible. The location is high above the Hudson River directly behind Cedar Hill Cemetery about a mile or two. It is located on the same road the Roseton Power Plant is on. Leander's set up Edson with a heating and plumbing business at 65 Chambers Street, Newburgh. After Edson's divorce, both Leander and George Avery were pressed into service to carry on the business. The business "Leander Clark Jr and Son" continued until approximately 1947. Leander was a director of the Orange County Agricultural Society for 15 yrs and general superintendent of its annual fairs for eleven years. He was well known as a horticulturist, a director of the Quassaick National Bank of Newburgh, and a trustee of Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church. Leander was thrown from his carriage and sustained the fracture of several ribs. On June 1, 1906 he contracted a cold which terminated in an attack of Pleuro-pneumonia, which finally caused his death. From Obituary "His many friends will miss his cheerful greetings and cordial salutations, for he was always of a gentle, kindly disposition and probably no man's advice in Newburgh was more eagerly sought and relied upon than his. Born in Middle Hope in 1843 she made her home at Middle Hope until she married Leander Clark Jr. in 1865. They made their home in Newburgh for about two years, and then they returned to Middle Hope in 1869. They remained there until 1887 when she and Leander moved back to Newburgh to Liberty Street. Church. The married couple moved into 173 Lander St. after their honeymoon. Grace Clark filed for divorce in 1901. Per newspaper article... Mr. Clrk has been away from Newburgh for some time and lives in New York City. Clark had agreed to pay his wife $10 per month towards her support. Payment stopped and Grace has filed for divorce. Mr. Clark was a pumber in Newburgh and the couple quarreled and the wife, on various occasions, bad insulted and thrown missiles at Mr. Clark. In 1898 he had mad provision for his wife and child at the home of his father, Leander Clark. He alleges that she left there of her own accord and has supported hereself since that time. Stanley was palying in the yard in the rear of his home this morning, when he suddenly stopped and called to his mother, "Mother, bugs out here". Mrs. Clark hurried out to see what the child had found and was horrified to see two large garter snakes lying on the board walk enjoying a quiet "Snooze." Mrs. Clark hurried the child into the house and notified her husband, who sent up his brother Avery to massacre the serpents. The family moved from "Clark's Dock" to 287 Liberty St. Newburgh, he attended and graduated from the Newburgh Academy, a member of the class of 1893. George Avery spent 2 years in trade school in NY City learning the business of heating and pumbing. He came back to Newburgh and ran the family heating and pumbing business that Leander Jr. and Edson had started. Edson had left the business because of a divorce. The business name, Leander Clark Jr. and Son, continued until approximately 1947. When Leander Jr., George's father died, the family house at 289 Liberty St. was pasted to George Avery. On Dec. 11, 1911, George Avery and Viola moved to a new house at 334 North Montgomery in Newburgh. George Avery was a member of the "Wheelman's Club" amd to the volunteers of "Leonard Steamer" fireman. After major surgery, George Avery could no longer live in Newburgh, NY and went to live with Averil (Daughter) in Milford, CT. Viola: Viola and George were married in St. John's M.E. Church by Rev. S.Ernest Jones. The married couple left town on the West Shore Train for Washington and Philadelphia. They will reside at 5 Clark St. upon their return. Viola was an active worker in Trinity M.E. Church, serving as treasurer at the time of her death. She was an active member of the Newburgh-Marlboro Garden club, being among the first of Newburgh ladies to become affiliated in the Ossoli Club and in the Young Women's Christian Association. She organized the Women's Bowling team and served as captain of the league for many years and was serving as secretary at the time of her death. Hi Cheri, Do you have the Death Certificate on Margaret "?" CLARK? What were the dates for her on the Headstone? Did she actually die in VA or WVA? Or, was she just buried there? Is John CLARK buried in WVA also? Did John predecease his wife Margaret? Any chance that they could have been born elsewhere....like Scotland..and perhaps spent some later years in Canada? I have a page from the 1871 Ontario, Canada Census with a Widow, Margaret CLARK, age 65 then, est: b: ca1806 in Scotland. It appears that there is one Son: James, 22 yrs and possibly two daus: Annabella m: to ?John Hay or Nay; and possibly: Elizabeth who may have married a Mr Lushman. All were born in Scotland except John HAY or NAY. Since, Jesse, the only known Son, was born in 1823, and probably the first born, do you have the names of other Children? What census were they noted on with their Parents: John & Margaret Clark? Perhaps some ideas here. I have the above 1871 Ont. Can. Census page as I am still seeking my Alexander Clark, b:ca 1844, Scotland 's Parents and emigration data. Know that he was in Lincoln Co. Later, in Feb 1877, they had a Son: my Grandfather: William Alexander Clark; and probably had a Son John Clark in ca1879. Probably in April 1879, this family emigrated from Ontario, Can and went to Attleboro, Bristol Co. MASS. Mary BOYD's Parents: John BOYD and wife Mary GUTHRIE along with 4 of their children went to Lincoln, Providence Co. RI. Both of these Families appeared on the 1880 Censuses respectively. I was wondering if anyone has a George Washington Clark in their data base. I have very little information on him. All we know is he was married to a "Belle" in 1898. However he had four children, Hirem, Miner, Wilbur, Cory or Cora and Benjamin Franklin. Benjamin went by the name of Frank. He m. Mary Kaiser. From the Bellevue, Sarpy Cty, NE census, I get the following: Frank, b. 8/1/1974 d. 1958 1900) Him IA; Father MO; Mother IN 1910) Him IA; Father IA; Mother IA. 1920) Him US; Father US; Mother MO. 1930) Him IA; Father MO; Mother MO Belle is buried in Bellevue, Sarpy County, off 36th street and Hi way 350, She married several more times, so we don't know her last name! She ran a roadhouse in Avery, Sarpy, Ne for awhile. I haven't found out much about that yet, either. Judging from the dates, the children were probably from another marriage. We don't know when he was born, nor where he died. He led wagon train out west and didn't come back after one trip. So, not sure what happened. They thought he was probably buried along the trail. Hi all... Welcome Clark is not that common a Clark name, since I only have 4 in my data base of 25,000 Clark names. I have, in my data base, the Henry mentioned below as well as the Aaron mentioned below as parents of a Welcome Clark(e). The others resided in the Northern states and are possibly connected somehow... Since this discussion started with Joseph and Jemima, perhaps we can all benefit with some more information and possibly connect all of these lines? Would anybody who has a Welcome Clark post his vital info (b. mar. d. dates and locations) as well as his spouse and her vitals? (and parents if it's not too much to ask?) If your genealogy program can create a descendant text report, that is the best source of this info, but may be too large for this type of message board. Hello, I'd like to repost my interest in a James CLARK/E who was born anywhere around 1790 to 1800 .. "somewhere." He is one of my two "solidly built, concrete-block walls" on the same branch of my family tree. A brief summary is that James "appears" in Little Compton, RI, in the 1820's, marries in nearby Westport, MA, in 1829, has a daughter there in 1836, and "disappears" in the 1840's ! A better explanation is that, when he married in 1829 in Westport, he stated he was previously from Little Compton. He married a recent widow who had 3 children, Mrs. Rhoda (MANCHESTER) LAVARE. They had a daughter, Mary Anna "Molly" CLARK, in 1836. James is not in the household with his wife, daughter, and step-children in the 1850 Census. The natural "assumption" is that he had died during the 1840's. But, a "distant cousin" found out that a James CLARK had gotten on a ship in New Bedford in 1844, heading for the Indian Ocean. This James "deserted ship" in Australia ! ...... While reviewing the notes on my grandmother's story, I was reminded that, when she married, she reported her birth-father as being... William CLARK ! And, I have "no clue" who this person is ! My "gut feeling" is that James and William CLARK/E were members of a CLARK family in CT, RI, or MA. I have a "suspicion" that Mrs. Mary (CLARK) DEXTER was in touch with CLARK family members after she married. Betty (near Lowell, MA) FYI: For newcomers to the List, my grandmother's "story" is a very long one, and I've posted it on the Lists before. A quick summary is that: In the 1850's in Stonington, CT, Mary "Molly" CLARK of Westport, MA, married John DEXTER of Killingly, CT, and they lived in Killingly. They had 3 daughters, but only one lived to adulthood. Mrs. Clara (DEXTER) YOUNG of Killingly was married with a 6-year-old son, Earle YOUNG, when her parents "strangely" left Killingly to move to Boston. Coincidentally, "someone" got pregnant with my grandmother - around the same time ("summer of 1888"). In 1892, John and Molly DEXTER, while in their late 50's, formally adopted a baby girl, then 3, and they renamed her .. Mary Anna Clark DEXTER. My "educated guess" is that Mrs. Clara YOUNG, back in Killingly, had an "unwanted pregnancy" which did not involve her husband. And, in order to keep a "small town scandal" down to a low roar, the baby girl was brought to Boston, and the DEXTER's moved there to have the baby live with them. Unfortunately, Mrs. DEXTER died in 1899, and Mary "Mamie" DEXTER (aka Mary "Mamie" CLARK) went to live in the Boston Female Orphans Asylum. Mr. DEXTER sold the house in Melrose and moved to Boston, and I believe he remained in contact with his Adoptive daughter (probable granddaughter) until his death in 1905. My grandmother remained in "homes" until ~1909. (There is a great deal more of this story. And, during this summer, I hope to write up a "short story" (actually a long story) including all aspects of my grandmother's childhood !) One aspect is that it has just occurred to me that the YOUNG and CROSBY families of Killingly, CT, must have remained in contact with my grandmother after 1905. My grandmother married in 1911, and lived in both Somerville and Medford (KERR family). And, yet, her nephew-by way of Adoption, Earle YOUNG, was able to make contact with her after several of her children had been born. So, he must have known her married name. (I believe that Earle YOUNG of Killingly, and later New Haven, CT, was actually her half-brother, 7 years older than she was.)
