Hi Ron, NO, I don't have the LDS VR2 database. I'd love it if you'd send it to me. Thanks a lot. Hi, I am looking for any information on my great grandparents, John CLARKE and Bridgit McDERMOTT. They lived in Nobber, Kells, County Meath and supposedly had thirteen children. I believe eight of those children died in epidemics of diptheria and scarlet fever and five survived. The three children who emigrated to New York were: 1. Henry Joseph (Harry) CLARKE (b. in County Meath) who married Catherine McGuire around 1914. They had one daughter -- Kathleen Miriam Clarke b. 9/27/1915. They lived in Forest Hills, NY. 2. Elizabeth (Lillie) CLARKE (b. approximately 1865 in County Meath) who married James FARRELL (b. Ireland). They had two sons -- John L. Farrell (m. Edna Ziegler) and Joseph Henry Farrell (m. Marian _______). The lived in Belle Harbor, Rockaway, NY. 3. Rose M. CLARKE (b. 1875 in County Meath) who married Thomas DUNNE (b. 1864 -- probably in County Meath) in 1908. They had one daughter -- Elizabeth Theresa DUNNE (b. 9/4/1909) and lived in New London, CT. (Thomas and Rose were my grandparents and Elizabeth was my mother). Two of the surviving CLARKE children would have stayed in Ireland with the parents so if anyone has any information about this family from Nobber, Kells, County Meath I'd like to hear from you. Thanks, Pat

I have Clarks that were in Hampshire Co. or more specifically Pendleton and Hardy Co. in 1787 and before. They were on the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac between the mouth of the Seneca and Petersburg. On a Hardy Co. tax list of 1787 Daniel, John and William were listed together on the same day. I believe Daniel was the father of my 3rd gt grandfather Daniel, and another son, Thomas Clark. Both of them settled in Jackson twp., Jackson Co., OH. Census records showing children's birth places indicate they were in Kentucky about 1800 before going to Ohio. Thomas operated a grist mill at what later became Limerick, OH. William Clark took his family with a large group of families going to New Design, IL in 1797 led by a Baptist minister, Rev. David Badgley. Bad weather, illness and family deaths caused William Clark to backtrack to Kentucky and then go to Ross Co., OH, a couple of miles from where Daniel and Thomas settled. A daughter of William Clark dictated (she left a large estate but was illiterate) a family history stating William Clark was from Scotland and married before coming to America. James D. Karen, I've only been able scan through your message very quickly--will go back tomorrow and read more carefully. However one phrase you wrote leaped out at me--Hampshire Co (W)VA. I have been trying to find out about a Thomas Clark b. 1755 who applied for a Revolutionary War pension in Bledsoe Co TN in 1819 Since this county is adjacent to Van Buren & Warren Counties where sons of my Thomas b. 1755 are documented to have been living 1820-1830, I have been examining the possibility that this Bledsoe Co TN Thomas might be ours. According to his pension record--oh rats! My mind just went blank--Oh! he enlisted under Captain Ashby--Stephen, I think. Anyway, I have been told that the Captain Ashby in question recruited primarily in the area of what is now Hampshire Co WV. So we may have something to talk about after all. I tend to agree that if there is a connection between our families, it more likely may have been back in Ireland before they came to this continent, however there is also a slim possibility they were together briefly in PA before spreading south and west. I want to talk more about resources for finding out about Clarks in Hampshire Co WV, but it will have to wait until I get my beauty sleep... Fay PS My particular Thomas Clark line was Baptist, however Samuel in Randolph Co NC was Presbyterian and there are a few Quakers smattered in between. Descendants of Thomas through his son Samuel b. 1775 (my husband's line) have been Methodist at least back to the Civil War.

Joe, is there any remote possibility that my Moses Clark could have been connected to the family of Thomas Clark #15447? Moses was born abt 1810 and lived in Lycoming. One of his sons was an Ellis. Do you have the complete line for this Thomas? Any other Clarks in PA with a son named Moses? Virginia
I am still looking for a Clark family in Lycoming, PA. Moses Clark, born 1810 and Elizabeth Hunt, born 1803. Their children were Elizabeth, Austin, Ellis, Absalom, John. Amos & Alfred. They all moved to St.Joseph, MI and Elkhart IN. I have not been able to trace the family back before PA. Virginia
Sadly, I don't think that our Clarke's are the same line -- at least not here in the U.S. According to census reports, marriage records, etc., it appears that our Archibald and his four children all emigrated from Ireland. Since Nancy was born in 1784-85, they could not have arrived later than that. At least three of the children were married in Berkeley or Hampshire Co., VA (now WV). I haven't found the marriage location of Gabriel or the name of his wife. It sounds like my Clarke/Clark clan arrived later than yours did. They are recorded as early settlers in Coshocton Co., OH, in the first decade of 1800 -- all four families are in records showing they lived there. It makes sense to guess that they all traveled together from VA/WV to Ohio. One and probably two of the sons relocated to IN around 1830. After that, all of the family can be documented moving from IN to Iowa, or from IN to KS. Some of the Iowa group moved on to either Wisc. or Washington -- I think Washington, but I'm telling you this from memory -- and some of those came back to Iowa. At least one Indiana family unit had his first child in Indiana, second in Iowa, third in Kansas, and his last in Colorado which is where he died. Clearly, he was not the only family member that moved from group to group since we find some of the Iowa group back with the Ohio group later in their lives. What is interesting about the names of our (yours and mine) is that they have given names that were more likely to have traditionally occurred in Scotland than Ireland (e.g., Archibald and Gabriel, for certain; Adam, maybe) as well as the names that were throughout the British Isles (e.g., Samuel). It suggests that both of our groups were Protestant even before arriving here. Thus, I believe that my group who were definitely from Ireland were probably Scot-Irish. Finally, there is one obituary in the family that reported my A. Adam Clarke was a cousin of the Irish (some people mistakenly think he was from England) Adam Clarke who was one of the original Methodists and in the British Isles is sometimes credited with holding the church together when the Wesley brothers died. Even if that were not so, he was a prolific writer and most universities in this country have at least one of his publications in their library -- often in their rare book collections. That Adam Clarke, according to his autobiography had uncles named Archibald, but memory does not serve me well and I cannot remember whether they were paternal, maternal, or both. (I read his book when I was in Ireland presenting a paper at the University of Dublin and managed to convince the head of the librarian staff that my credentials from the University of Houston where I was then teaching would suffice to grant me entrance to and use of the Univ. of Dublin library. Fortunately, they had a LOT of his books. Unfortunately, my time was limited and I did not take many notes while I was reading!) Let me know if you have rumors circulating in your clan that your family also was related to the Methodist Adam Clarke. It would be interesting to learn that they were related PRIOR to their emigration to the U.S. (or the U.S.-to-be!). Your potential cousin, Karen

Karen, I'm fascinated to see the names you list--a naming pattern strikingly similar to apparently related Clark lines a number of us have been researching. My particular line is Thomas Clark b. 1755 of Pulaski Co KY, however we have reason to believe he was related to Clark lines that were in Lancaster & York Co PA, Orange & Randolph Co NC, and York & Union Co SC. These lines spread out west and north to GA, TN, KY, OH, IN, and so forth. One notable name is Archibald Clark b. 1791-1800 Orange Co NC to James Clark and Grace Thompson. He was a great grandson of William Clark b. ca. 1700 of Orange Co NC and was witness to a Bedford Co TN deed involving property left by his uncle James Clark Jr. Archibald died in 1815 in Orange Co NC and that might be the end of it, except that we curiously find other Archibald Clarks mentioned in the same vicinities as members of the Orange Co NC and Pulaski Co KY family lines in Tennessee and Arkansas. I think the Archibald Clark who was the progenitor of the Clark families who passed his name down came originally from Ireland by way of North Carolina to western Tennessee. A son or grandson of his who also bears the name Archibald was in the same Arkansas county as children of my Thomas Clark. Some descendants of Samuel Clark from York Co PA who died in Randolph Co NC in 1783 (believed to be related to William Clark of Orange Co NC and Baptist Clark of Lancaster Co PA) migrated to Ohio and Indiana. His son John Clark b 1759 married Mary SPENCER. The Clarks in Orange Co NC were connected with the RHEA/RAY/WRAY family; in fact, William Clark's (b. 1700) wife Mary Allison was a daughter of Grizzel WRAY. Likewise, the STRAIN surname is connected with my WOODS of Orange Co NC who were neighbors of the Clarks, and the same STRAIN also sold property to a Clark in Guilford Co NC. Both the RAY/RHEA/WRAY and STRAIN families came from the Lancaster Co PA area. Regarding my own Thomas Clark--His son Stewart married Martha "Patsy" ENGLISH. Two grandchildren married BELLs from Randolph Co NC who had migrated to KY with their parents. Regarding the naming patterns, all lines we have been looking at contain to varying degrees the names Jesse, William, Samuel, James, John, Thomas, Jeremiah and Abner. Finally, I have reason to believe these families are also connected with William Clark of Lancaster Co PA (d. 1763). This William Clark came to PA from Ireland shortly before 1738. It does appear all our lines are Scots-Irish. If you have a male descendant in your line who would be willing to participate in the Colonial Clark DNA Project, a dna test may prove to be valuable tool for you with interesting results. We already have two descendants of Thomas in the project and are looking for descendants from the other lines mentioned above to participate, as well.
