Beth, Good Job!!! There is an additional link you could provide for folks with Virginia ancestors... and, they could add their own obits in the corresponding counties, if they do not know the county there is an Unknown county at the end of the page... this might take care of folks wanting to send you theirs... Dear Jean Gilmore, I have several Clark ancestors who were in the 72nd Indiana, Col. John T. Wilder's Lightning Brigade, noted for saving the Union army on several occasions. They were the first unit to acquire Spencer Repeating rifles. Although I knew my Clarks were with Wilder, I had to go to the National Archives in Washington, D.C. to get their service records. There were MANY Clarks from Indiana in the Civil War. You can also order a file from NARA for a fee. Go the the National Archives on line. You can do a search for your ancestor's regiment on Indiana in the Civil War and get the regimental history. Unfortunately, most unit rosters are not listed in entirity. Hope this helps some. According to 1905 Kansas Census, John M. CLARK (b. 1842) enlisted in state of Indiana, and was assigned to Co. E, 73rd Regiment, Infantry, and was honorably discharged. 1915 census mentioned service in artillery. Also, John M. CLARK was held in prison. Where can I find additional information such as: county in Indiana where he enlisted; hometown; prison and amount of time held; injuries (if any); etc. I will appreciate any assistance. Also linked to it are several of my other websites including: Virginia Death Certificates, 1912-1939, URL is: http://virginiaobits.homestead.com/vadc.html that will tell you how I can get Va. death certificates for you but also some great vital statistics links and genealogy links! This is one of my most persistent "brick walls," and I periodically re-post it in hope that a new reader connects with it. I am searching for info about my g-grandmother MARGARET CLARK who was born about 1831 in North Carolina (possibly near Raleigh). MARGARET died 27 Jan 1881 at Portsmouth, Iowa. Her headstone states that she was 49. She got sick in Kansas, and went to Portsmouth, IA for treatment, where her brother, Dr. JOHN W. CLARK, practiced medicine. Dr. JOHN CLARK also died shortly thereafter on 11 Jun 1881, and is buried in Portsmouth Cemetery close to MARGARET. Dr. Clark was a Mason, and may have been a Civil War vet. Lee A. Also, keep in mind when requesting files, that there is no charge if the file is not found, so don't hesitate to request some that you only have an "educated" guess about their service. Determine from their age what War it might have been or dates he/she might have served. Don't forget that females also may have military pension records either on their own service or their spouse? The records will be in the spouse's name. Some early (Prior to Civil War) records might be in State archives as they were often State militia. Do they support searches or exact lookups? The SSN application allowed 10 years of leeway if I recall. For example, I know my Father was in the service but I don't know if he was in the Army or Air Force. The 180 form implies that you must select the branch of service.. And it would be cool to find out if any of my anscestors were in the military, but my gut feeling is I can't just send in a bunch of "see if this person was ever in one of the services" requests. On the "National Archives Order For Copies of Federal Pension or Bounty Land Warrant Applications" form, it has a box to check to ask for Full Pension Application File $37.00, a second box you can check to get Pension Documents Packet $14.75, or a third box to ask for Bounty-Land Warrant Application $17.95. I asked for the Pension Documents Packet and only got 5 papers. Guess it's worth the extra money to check the first box. I think I ordered the application forms, on-line, from the National Archives. Thanks for the info Ruth, I guess I'll give it another try and see what I get. I noticed you are researching Edward Doty. I've run across that name a number of times and wonder what Clarke line his wife Faith Clarke fits into. I see numerous ties to families on World Connect on Rootsweb. Faith Clarkes parents listed as father Thurston/Tristram Clarke and mother Faith Locs. They come from Suffolk, England where my ancestor Joseph Clarke imigrated from, around 1635. Do you have anything that ties those families together?? Seems possible they were related. Linda Owen
On the subject of pension records, I have obtained pension records for a couple of my ancestors. I did not realize there was a "full" record available. How does one go about getting a full pension record? Thanks, Robin Clark
I have always requested the full pension records even though I paid over $60 for one when you were charged extra. At that time, they photocopies 10-15 pages of info the researcher felt was important for,I think, $10, and then informed you of the additional cost of the complete file. I always sent for the extra material. I have received many little "gems" that way. Some of the interesting things have been a letter sent by the son advising of his father's death. A list of final illness & burial expenses incurred by the deceased with bills from attending physician and nurse, funeral home, etc. Affidavits of persons (many family members) who attended deceased (Pensioner) prior to his death. Affidavits from persons (many family members & neighbors) attesting to the authenticity of the Pensioner's statements while applying for pension. Guardianship papers when a child was under 18 years of age at the pensioner's death. There was an affadavit from the midwife attending this child's birth attesting to his relationship to the deceased pensioner. Just lots of personal info I was interested in but the person doing the photocopying did not feel was useful. I felt it was worth the extra money.
